No. 24 Tennessee trying to build off CFP berth with new QB in Josh Heupel's 5th season

Josh Heupel has a new starting quarterback for his 24th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers, with Joey Aguilar coming through the transfer portal to earn the job for the season opener Aug. 30 against Syracuse in Atlanta. 'He's extremely comfortable in what we're doing right now,' Heupel said of Aguilar. Quarterback had been the biggest question for the Vols because Nico Iamaleava stunningly left just before the spring game. Iamaleava landed at UCLA, where Aguilar changed his mind and chose Tennessee after throwing for 3,003 yards with 23 touchdown passes and 14 interceptions last season at Appalachian State. He beat out Jake Merklinger, who played in two games for the Vols last season, and freshman George MacIntyre. Quarterback is just one of many positions on offense that will feature a new starter from 2024, when Tennessee went 10-3. The Vols reached the College Football Playoff before losing in the first round to eventual national champion Ohio State. Replacing Sampson Tennessee also has a deep group to help replace Dylan Sampson, the SEC Offensive Player of the Year who left for the NFL. He keyed the SEC's best rushing offense and ninth nationally by running for a school-record 1,491 yards. DeSean Bishop earned a scholarship after running for 455 yards last season, and the Vols also have Star Thomas, who transferred from Duke. He has experience with 40 career games at Duke and New Mexico State and 2,044 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns. New offensive line Left tackle Lance Heard is the only returning starter with David Sanders Jr., a five-star recruit, on track to start at right tackle. Tennessee has to find a new center with Cooper Mays gone after holding that spot for Heupel's first four seasons. Heupel also added experience through the transfer portal Sam Pendleton started seven games at left guard and was the backup center for Notre Dame, which lost in the national championship game. Wendell Moe Jr. started two seasons at guard for Arizona. Catching questions This position may be the Vols' biggest issue. The top three wide receivers from 2024 are gone to the NFL, medical retirement or the portal. Seven are on scholarship with only three having played in college. Watching McCoy Preseason AP All-American Jermod McCoy could be the first cornerback selected in the 2026 NFL draft depending on his return from the ACL torn in January. He started practicing in early August. Tennessee has experience in the secondary, but McCoy tied for the team lead with four interceptions in 2024. The schedule The Vols have one of the easier schedules in the SEC. ETSU is the home opener Sept. 6 before hosting No. 5 Georgia, then UAB. The SEC road slate starts Sept. 27 at Mississippi State with visits to No. 8 Alabama on Oct. 18 and Kentucky on Oct. 25. Tennessee leaves Rocky Top only once in November to play No. 15 Florida. That leaves the Vols playing three of four at home hosting No. 18 Oklahoma, New Mexico State and Vanderbilt.

These are the four best tacklers on the Texas defense

AUSTIN, Texas — Few things scare football coaches more than tackling early in the season. 'You ask any head coach around the country, that's the first thing out of their mouth of what's your biggest concern going into Week One is how well are we going to tackle because we all can only do it so much for the betterment of the team,' Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian said on Saturday. An inherently physical act, tackling puts both the offensive and defensive players at risk of injury, a concern throughout the history of the sport magnified in the current era by the expansion of the College Football Playoff to 12 teams. For Texas, that means the two scrimmages of preseason camp are especially important to practice live tackling in a game-like situation. Sarkisian was happy with how the team tackled during Saturday's scrimmage, even as the offense got the ball into space more often that forced defenders to make open-field tackles. 'There were some very good tackles made, a couple of them touchdown-saving tackles that forced the offense to have to go execute in the red area. So in the end, we've got to find our opportunities to tackle. We've got to do a great job in our individual periods of working on tackling — there's only so much we can tackle to get ourselves ready to go,' Sarkisian said. During Monday's availability, the Texas head coach was asked to name his top tacklers, mentioning junior safety Jelani McDonald, junior safety Derek Williams, junior linebacker Anthony Hill Jr., and sophomore linebacker Ty'Anthony Smith. McDonald is expected to have a breakout season in his first year as a full-time starter after recording 33 tackles, one tackle for loss, and one interception in 2024 with five missed tackles on defense for a missed tackle rate of 12.5 percent, seventh-lowest on the team among players who played more than 100 snaps. 'Jelani is a fantastic tackler,' Sarkisian said. 'He's got range, he's got speed, he's got size to get people on the ground.' After spending the offseason rehabilitating from a season-ending knee injury, Williams has been a scrimmage standout in proving that he's back to full health. 'I think Derek Williams another fantastic tackler, having him back out there,' Sarkisian said. A preseason All-American, Hill has a chance to secure his place in the pantheon of the all-time great Texas linebackers after leading the team in tackles with 113 last season while adding 16.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, four forced fumbles, and an interception. As the Denton Ryan product has worked on improving his coverage ability, he's also made strides with his ability to be effective in space. 'I think Anthony is a fantastic tackler. I think he's really taken another step in the open field,' Sarkisian said. Behind Hill and junior Liona Lefau, Smith is pushing for significant snaps in a potential breakout season after earning playing time as a core member of three special teams units and flashing on defense with an interception recorded in the blowout win over Florida as a true freshman. 'Ty'Anthony Smith is another very good tackler as well,' Sarkisian said. 'Ty'Anthony forcing himself [onto the field]. He's playing really good. I'm really proud of Ty'Anthony, he's really grown up, not only on the field, but off the field, and you can see the level of maturity on the field, his intent every day at practice. He's not the biggest guy, but the physicality that he plays with and the speed he plays with definitely shows up.'

Texas Named Biggest Threat to SEC Powerhouse for Elite College Football Prospect

Texas Named Biggest Threat to SEC Powerhouse for Elite College Football Prospect originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Texas Longhorns are attempting to win the race for one of the top prospects at his position in the 2027 class. Four-star tight end Brock Williams is who the Longhorns have their eye on, but other schools are doing the same thing. Rivals' Greg Smith predicted that Williams would choose the Georgia Bulldogs, but named the Ohio State Buckeyes and Texas as the biggest threats to Georgia. Williams hails from Libertyville, Illinois, and is listed at 6-foot-5, 210 pounds. His list of offers also includes the likes of the Michigan State Spartans, Iowa Hawkeyes, Kentucky Wildcats and Arizona State Sun Devils. He is the No. 2 tight end and No. 45 overall prospect in the Rivals Industry Rankings for the class. The Longhorns have yet to visit with Williams, while Georgia has already done so twice. The Bulldogs have proven to develop tight ends, recently sending Brock Bowers to the NFL. Bowers now plays for the Las Vegas Raiders. Texas is no slouch in that area, however, sending Gunnar Helm to the next level. The Tennessee Titans took Helm in the 2025 NFL Draft. He finished second (786) on Texas in receiving yards behind wideout Matthew Golden. While the Longhorns are making a push for Williams, they are also trying to fend off other programs attempting to flip their commits. The Miami Hurricanes are heavily pursuing Texas running back Derrek Cooper, the No. 2 running back in the 2026 class. The LSU Tigers are also trying to maintain a relationship with longtime Texas commit and five-star quarterback Dia Bell. Recruiting in the era of NIL and the transfer portal is no easy story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Aug 13, 2025, where it first appeared.
