Inter Milan's Mehdi Taremi Stuck In Iran Amid Conflict, Expected To Miss FIFA CWC 2025

Last Updated: Taremi, who had been on international duty for Iran, couldn't get a flight out of Tehran to join Inter in the USA for their first game, amid the conflict between Iran and Israel. Iranian forward Mehdi Taremi is set to miss the Italian side's opening fixture at the 2025 edition of the FIFA Club World Cup after the 32-year-old was stranded in Tehran amid the conflict between Israel and Iran. Taremi, who netted in Iran's 3-0 win over North Korea in the World Cup qualifier between the sides last week, couldn't get a flight out of Iran to join his Inter teammates in the United States of America. Taremi remained in Iran for a few days longer compared to the rest of the Inter internationals in order to attend an Iranian award ceremony. The forward was presented with the 'Toopa Award', the first edition of the Iranian Golden Ball, at the gala. Inter will look to turn the page on their disappointing UEFA Champions League Final outing, in which they were hammered 5-0 by the champions, PSG, at the 32-team group and knockout event in North America. The revamped edition of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 was kicked off by Lionel Messi's Inter Miami, who were held to a goalless draw by Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly in the opener at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday. Miami were without full-back Jordi Alba and midfielder Yannick Bright in the opener, as Javier Mascherano's team relied on the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner to make a difference. The Argentine came close multiple times, including a free kick that hit the wrong side of the net, and a brilliant curling effort in second-half added time, which was tipped over the bar by the Egyptian goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy. Miami's goalkeeper Oscar Ustari prevented disappointment for his team in the first half by saving a penalty from the Egyptian player Trezeguet. First Published: June 15, 2025, 09:11 IST

MIAMI GARDENS: Lionel Messi and Inter Miami were held to a 0-0 draw by Egyptian side Al Ahly on Saturday as the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup got off to a smooth start in front of 60,927 fans in Florida. Messi was denied a storybook stoppage-time winner when he saw his curling shot from 20 yards out tipped on to the bar by Mohamed El Shenawy as Miami piled on the pressure in the final minutes of the game. Miami had its own good fortune, surviving a first half onslaught by 12-time African champion Al Ahly, with goalkeeper Oscar Ustari saving a penalty from Trezeguet just before the break.

FIFA Club World Cup 2025: Inter Miami play out goalless draw with Al Ahly

The opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 saw Lionel Messi's Inter Miami and Egyptian giants Al Ahly share the spoils in a goalless draw, as both sides missed crucial opportunities to snatch victory at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. In front of a packed stadium of over 60,000 fans, Messi came agonizingly close to delivering a late winner. Deep into stoppage time, the Argentine maestro unleashed a trademark curling effort from the right side of the box. However, Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy produced a superb diving save, just managing to tip the ball onto the crossbar in the 96th minute. Earlier, in the 60th minute, Messi also came close with a dangerous free kick that skimmed just past the post. Ustari's Heroics Keep Miami Alive Inter Miami had to weather heavy pressure from Al Ahly in the first half, particularly relying on their experienced goalkeeper Oscar Ustari. The 38-year-old Argentine was a wall between the posts, making several key stops. The defining moment came just before halftime when Ustari denied Trezeguet from the penalty spot in the 43rd minute. He didn't stop there—immediately recovering to block the follow-up shot, keeping the score level. Key Takeaways from the Stalemate The 0-0 result leaves both teams with everything to play for in Group A, where stronger opponents await, namely Brazil's Palmeiras and Portugal's FC Porto. With only the top two teams advancing to the knockout stage, the pressure is on for both sides in their upcoming matches. Despite being second-best in the opening half, Inter Miami grew into the game and controlled much of the second period. Messi led the charge as Miami pushed for a breakthrough, narrowly missing out twice. The performance will give the team confidence heading into tougher fixtures. Post-Match Reactions 'It was a great occasion for football,' said Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano. 'This tournament allows us to compete with teams we normally wouldn't face. It's a valuable opportunity to show what we're capable of.' Meanwhile, Al Ahly forward Wessam Abou Ali expressed disappointment. 'We should have taken all three points,' he said. 'We respect Inter Miami and their stars, but we had enough chances to be up by three or four goals in the first half.' The result sets the stage for a tense group stage, with both teams still in the hunt for a place in the round of 16.
