Volunteers prepare community garden for summer

A community garden on Erie's east side has a refreshed new look to go into the summer season.
Volunteers woke up early Saturday morning to replant a plot located at the corner of East 6th and East Avenue, across the street from the ECAT building.
The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy (WPC), along with some volunteers from the neighborhood, put new perennials in the ground to beautify the area.

Organizers said this project is all about community and making an impact wherever they can.
'It's really nice as you come down. This is actually the entrance to the city from the east side when you think about it, because the Bayfront road is right down there, so we have a lot of people that go by it in the day and beep their horns,' said Tom Chandley, garden steward for the WPC.

'We're really close to a gym, a school. There's a lot of traffic that comes by here from points of the day, and people really slow down to take a look at the garden,' said Matt Jenkins, the Operations Coordinator for the WPC.
The conservancy has 130 community gardens that spread across western Pennsylvania.

Rite Aid store closures update: List of doomed locations keeps growing, now includes more than a third of all stores

As it prepares to sell off its remaining assets in the wake of a second bankruptcy filing, Rite Aid continues to move aggressively to close pharmacy locations that it no longer deems viable. This company asked most corporate employees to relocate to Chicago. The majority declined Trump administration orders Pennsylvania power plant to run through the summer Redfin: These 31 major housing markets have shifted to buyer's markets The drugstore chain, which has already found buyers for most of its prescription business, has added another 111 retail drugstores to its rapidly growing list of doomed locations, a court filing revealed last week. The list includes pharmacies across 12 states, with California and New York being hit the hardest. Interested parties have until June 9 to object. Fast Company has reached out to Rite Aid to ask about the timeline of the closures. With this latest list, the pharmacy chain has now marked more than 470 stores for closure since the Chapter 11 process began about a month ago, comprising more than a third of Rite Aid's total fleet of 1,277 locations. The May 30 filing is its fourth notice of additional closures. Previous waves of closures were disclosed in earlier filings: May 5: 47 initial locations May 9: 68 additional locations May 16: 95 additional locations May 23: 151 additional locations Rite Aid had initially scrambled to sell off its prescription files amid concerns that a mass exodus of customers would diminish the value of its pharmacy assets. It quickly announced deals with CVS, Walgreens, Albertsons, and others. For most customers, that means their prescriptions will be transferred to an entirely different pharmacy and location. But only a handful of physical retail stores were included in those announcements, and the exact locations of those stores have yet to be released—leading to further uncertainty for Rite Aid customers and employees. Now time is running out for companies that may be interested in taking over additional Rite Aid locations before they close for good. Any such company was required to indicate its interest by last Friday. Bid submissions are due on June 18, with an auction planned for June 24 if necessary. In addition to physical stores, Rite Aid's remaining assets include the Thrifty ice cream brand, which is sold by third-party retailers in addition to being available at counters in many Rite Aid locations. Local pharmacies see surge in patients amid Rite Aid closures

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Local pharmacies are seeing a surge in patients searching for a new place to fill their prescriptions after Rite Aid announced 68 locations in Western New York will close their doors. 'Very stressful times. Naturally we're fielding a lot of telephone calls. We're prepared for it,' said Bradley Arthur, owner of Black Rock Pharmacy. 'This hasn't come as a complete surprise to us.' The independent pharmacy, located on Tonawanda Street in Buffalo's Black Rock neighborhood, is one of the many places filling the void. Kenmore Prescription Center on Delaware Avenue has a sign out front welcoming patients who have to transfer pharmacies. Supervising pharmacist Nicole Rutowski said the center has increased its staff, added more hours and updated their technology to handle more customers. 'Since the news came out it's been busier, we have calls every day, we have people stopping in every day trying to figure out what pharmacy they can go to,' Rutowski said. 'Unfortunately, for some people, it's limited. If you have Independent Health, CVS doesn't accept it. That's not an option, so you've got to find somewhere else.' The number one tip pharmacists have for those affected by the Rite Aid closures is to not wait until the last minute when you need a prescription to find a new pharmacy. 'People are scared out there right now, understandably so, but my answer to that is, if you get out in front of it and properly plan, there is a solution and the solution could be right in your neighborhood,' Arthur said.
