UFC champion Dricus Du Plessis says 'special' Khamzat Chimaev worthy of all the praise

USA Today3 days ago
UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis doesn't view Khamzat Chimaev as overrated.
Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) will look to notch his third title defense when he takes on Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 headliner on Aug. 16 at United Center in Chicago (ESPN+, ESPN, pay-per-view).
After storming into the UFC with dominant finish after the other, many touted Chimaev as a future champion. Du Plessis thinks Chimaev is as good as advertised.
"I think Khamzat is a special fighter," Du Plessis said on "The Ariel Helwani Show." "The first time I saw him fight, I knew this guy was going to be special – 100 percent. There was a stage where he didn't fight for like two years or something. Listen, he speaks a lot more than he fights, I can tell you that much.
"He was calling out every single person. That just started getting annoying the sh*t out of me. He was calling out welterweights, middleweights, light heavyweights, but he wasn't fighting anyone. There was never ever a stage where I went, 'Oh, this guy's overrated.' No, he is as good as people think. I think he is as good as people think, I just think I'm a lot better than people think."
Chimaev has put in plenty of work on his cardio while training with Sam Calavitta in California, but betting underdog Du Plessis is ready to defy the odds once again.
"I have to say, Khamzat looks incredible in training, and people are talking about, 'Oh, he's training with this new coach,'" Du Plessis said. "I'm very happy for him. He did it five weeks out from the fight. I've been doing this my whole life. I've been fighting title fights. I did it for five, six years, entered the UFC, defended my belt twice already. The hard work that he's putting in, that people are going, 'Oh, he's really training hard,' that's what I've been doing every single camp, fight after fight after fight. That's not new to me.
"People are praising him for doing what's required. I'm really happy for him, and I think he's going to come prepared more than ever. I know that feeling of fighting for your first title. I know he's going to come in there prepared. He's a special fighter. He's incredibly good. I can't wait. This is going to be history. I am going out there, and I'm going to shock the world once again like every other time. Everybody said it's impossible: Not this guy, not this guy. You're going to see the boogeyman break in there and then realize, there's only one boogeyman, and that's me."

UFC\u00a0on ESPN 72 bonuses: ‘Fluffy' goes hard into title picture with extra $50K

The UFC handed out four bonuses after Saturday's card in Las Vegas, including one to a headliner who looked unstoppable. After UFC on ESPN 72, four fighters picked up an extra $50,000 for their performances at the UFC Apex. Check out the winners below. Performance of the Night: Joselyne Edwards The first eight fights in Joselyne Edwards' UFC career were decisions. Lately, she's a different fighter. Edwards (16-6 MMA, 7-4 UFC) picked up her third straight stoppage win when she took out Priscila Cachoeira (13-7 MMA, 5-7 UFC) with a brutal knockout combination. Cachoeira had been keeping her hands down and Edwards made her pay in a big way for the first bonus of her career. Performance of the Night: Elijah Smith Elijah Smith (9-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) delivered one of the scariest knockouts in recent memory when he slammed Toshiomi Kazama (11-5 MMA, 1-3 UFC) onto the back of his head and neck in the first round on the prelims. Kazama was holding on to a choke, and Smith slammed his way out and right into a devastating win. Kazama was out for a while and had to be transported to a hospital, where he eventually was given the all clear. Performance of the Night: Christian Leroy Duncan Christian Leroy Duncan (12-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) had a couple early issues against Eryk Anders (17-9 MMA, 9-9 UFC) when he caught him in the eye, then hit him with a low blow. But after he settled down, Duncan went to work putting Anders away with a feverish assault. Performance of the Night: Anthony Hernandez Anthony Hernandez (15-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) made Roman Dolidze (15-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) look positively outclassed in the middleweight main event. 'Fluffy' at times seemed to be able to ragdoll Dolidze around the cage, particularly at the end when he had a standing rear-naked choke – and started dragging Dolidze with it while he quickly got the tap. Hernandez said he wants a title shot next, or at minimum a 'BMF' title fight at 185 pounds.

49ers sign WR with Brandon Aiyuk's injury return unknown

The post 49ers sign WR with Brandon Aiyuk's injury return unknown appeared first on ClutchPoints. The San Francisco 49ers are starting training camp soon, and there is some uncertainty surrounding the health of their wide receiver room. Taking that into account, the 49ers have gone on to add some depth at the skill position, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner. '49ers are signing WR Equanimeous St. Brown after a tryout on Monday. Gives them a little depth at a time with plenty of questions in that room,' Wagoner wrote on X, formerly Twitter. St. Brown has bounced around on certain teams for the past few years, with his last stop being with the New Orleans Saints. He should bring some much-needed help to the 49ers' receiver room, as no one knows how long Brandon Aiyuk will be sidelined after tearing his ACL last season. 'San Francisco GM John Lynch told reporters today that 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk currently is 'not anywhere close to having a concrete timeline' to return from the knee injury suffered last season,' Schefter wrote. As of now, the receivers that the 49ers know for certain that will be healthy going into the training camp is Jauan Jennings and Greg Kittle. Ricky Pearsall is currently on the PUP list, but the expectation is for him to be taken off the list sometime early in camp. The 49ers will have to answer a lot of questions on offense this season after not performing to their standard last year. Many are hoping that Christian McCaffrey can stay healthy throughout the season and bounce back. With Deebo Samuel Sr. gone to the Washington Commanders, someone will have to step up in the receiver room to make up for his production. Brock Purdy will also be in the spotlight after signing his max extension this offseason, and some want to see if he can live up to the contract. UFC on ESPN 72 results: Anthony Hernandez taps Roman Dolidze, calls for title shot

Anthony Hernandez proved he was a level above Roman Dolidze in the UFC on ESPN 72 main event. Simply put, the fight was not close. Hernandez (15-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) dominated virtually every moment of the middleweight bout as Dolidze (15-4 MMA, 9-4 UFC) struggled to find any answers offensively. It all came to an end at 2:45 of Round 4 when Hernandez forced a tap from a rear-naked choke. The fight began with steady striking exchanges as Hernandez controlled the center of the cage. Dolidze took the fight to the fence in the clinch, but was unable to get the fight to the ground. Instead, it would be Hernandez to get a takedown first. He added a second a few moments later after scoring with clean striking. It was a strong opening round for Hernandez both on the feet and on the mat. The fight quickly turned into a wild brawl in Round 2. Hernandez marched forward through a firefight, talking to a retreating Dolidze. The heated exchanges lasted for a few moments, but the fight returned to the mat for scrambles. Once the fight got back to the feet, Hernandez continued teeing off on Dolidze, who did his best just to survive the round. Hernandez closed out the final seconds unloading heavy ground and pound through the horn. When referee Herb Dean intervened, Hernandez thought he won the fight and began celebrating with his team. The confusion was cleared up, and the fight continued into Round 3. "Fluffy" continued to dominate the fight on the mat. Dolidze got away with multiple fence grabs as Hernandez worked through positions. Hernandez did whatever he wanted to do as the time ticked away in a completely one-sided round. The fight reached Round 4, where Hernandez picked up right where he left off. On the feet and on the ground, Hernandez was in full control. The final sequence occurred after a takedown, where Dolidze grabbed the fence. Dean took a point without interrupting the flow, and Hernandez drilled a few knees to the head and then locked in a rear-naked choke. The squeeze was incredibly tight, and the tap came quickly. During his post-fight interview, Hernandez made his case for a middleweight title shot. "They've done a great job of matchmaking me. I want to prove that I can take the title," Hernandez told Daniel Cormier. "If it has to be a BMF title just to take a contender seat, then run it. I want a belt, I want something. I want to prove that I'm the best in the world." With the win in his second UFC main event, Hernandez extends his current winning streak to eight. His current run includes stoppages of Rodolfo Vieira, Marc-Andre Barriault, Edmen Shahbazyan, Roman Kopylov and Michel Pereira. Currently ranked No. 10 by the promotion, "Fluffy" will move into the single digits as he takes one step closer to a shot at the title. Full UFC on ESPN 72 results Anthony Hernandez def.
