IFTAs: Kneecap lead nominations ahead of Irish film awards
Members of the rap group Kneecap will compete against Hollywood superstar Cillian Murphy for a major honour at the Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs) on Friday.An Irish-language film about the group is nominated in 17 award categories.The three members of the west Belfast rap group are each nominated in the lead actor in a film category.The nominees for best film are Kathleen Is Here, King Frankie, Kneecap, Small Things Like These, Spilt Milk, and The Apprentice.
Kneecap, which is based on a semi-fictionalised account of how the rap trio was formed, is nominated under several categories, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Script.In December, the film won seven British Independent Film Awards, including the top honor - Best British Independent Film. All three of the band members - Naoise Ó Cairealláin (Móglaí Bap), JJ Ó Dochartaigh (DJ Próvaí), and Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh (Mo Chara) - are nominated in the lead actor in a film category.Also nominated in this category is Peter Coonan for his role in King Frankie, Paul Mescal for Gladiator II and Cillian Murphy for Small Things Like These.
Murphy, who last year picked up the IFTA, and the Oscar, for his role in Oppenheimer, was nominated as best lead actor in a film for his starring role in the adaption of Claire Keegan's novella.Small Things Like These was also nominated for best film.The lead actor in a drama nominees include Anthony Boyle (Say Nothing), Colin Farrell (The Penguin), Michael Fassbender (The Agency), Ciarán Hinds (The Dry), Andrew Scott (Ripley) and Aidan Turner (Rivals).An IFTA Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to the actor Colm Meaney.IFTA said this year's nominees "reflect Ireland's unparalleled storytelling on the global stage."
Disney drama Say Nothing, which is based on a book by Patrick Radden Keefe of the same title, is nominated in 10 categories. It tells the stories of several people living in Northern Ireland during the Troubles.The series stars Lola Petticrew as Dolours Price and Hazel Doupe as Marian Price, young sisters who were prominent members of the IRA.Among the stories featured in the series is that of Jean McConville, who was among those murdered and "disappeared" by the IRA during the conflict.The series is represented in the director and script categories while Petticrew will compete against Nicola Coughlan (Bridgerton) and others in the lead actress in a drama category.Other Northern Ireland based nominations include Blue Lights, a Belfast based police drama, which is up for best drama and best script.The second season of the BBC drama follows a batch of newly-qualified officers navigating policing in a post-conflict Northern Ireland.Irish language crime drama Crá, produced by Fíbín Media and Zoogon for BBC Gaeilge and TG4, is also nominated in the drama category.
Elsewhere, Saoirse Ronan is nominated as best lead actress in a film for her performance in The Outrun.Based on Amy Liptrot's award winning memoir, it's about a young woman returning to her home in Orkney to deal with her past, and her addictions.Also nominated were Carolyn Bracken for Oddity, Jessie Buckley for Wicked Little Letters, Hazel Doupe for Kathleen Is Here, Eileen Walsh for Small Things Like These, and Alisha Weir for Abigail.Kneecap stars Simone Kirby, Jessica Reynolds and Fionnuala Flaherty are all nominated in the best supporting actress in a film category.They are joined by Saoirse Ronan for wartime drama Blitz, Clare Dunne for Kathleen Is Here and Zara Devlin for Small Things Like These.Best International Film contenders include: Anora, Conclave, Dune Part Two, The Brutalist, The Outrun and The Substance.

And this magic happens everyday on a Disney Cruise. I was on board the Disney Fantasy sailing across the Med as the ship embarked on its first ever season in Europe. It's easy to see why they named her Fantasy. As I explored the 14-deck vessel, I still had to pinch myself as I regularly came face-to-face with other childhood heroines I'd grown up watching, such as Jasmine and Mulan. Many kids relished the opportunity to don their favourite princess costumes every day. However, I wasn't expecting the cruise to be such a big hit with the adults, too. In fact, there are so many adult-only areas around the ship where parents, couples or solo travellers can kick back and relax, away from the excited giggles. The spa is a haven away from the action with heated loungers and rainforest showers as well as a Jacuzzi that looked out over the endless ocean. For a sophisticated evening, classy champagne bar Ooh La La serves elegant tipples like the Elderbubble, a champagne and elderflower concoction topped with a raspberry. An All-New Adventure Is On The Horizon Or there's the Irish-inspired, O'Gills, and lively club-bar, while The Tube serves drinks late into the night. Aside from the watering holes, there are two adult-exclusive restaurants too — Remy, which dishes up fancy French plates in a glam setting, and Italian-style Palo which serves traditional dishes but with a modern twist. For a properly-personalised experience, though, check out the three main restaurants: Royal Court, Animator's Palate and Enchanted Garden, which serve three-course dinners as part of the 'rotational dining'. This gives guests the same waiting staff every night who will get to know likes and dislikes and suggest dishes accordingly. I had the lovely Sheree from the Philippines who made sure everyone was thoroughly fed, and Adroy from India who gave our table puzzles every night to keep us entertained. When it comes to on board activities, the list is as long as Rapunzel's hair, with everything from Disney trivia quizzes to crafts, silent discos, and character meet-and-greets. It would take weeks do them all. Luckily, on day one I'd met a passenger who was on her fourth Disney cruise and was happy to share all of her tops tips. It's from her that I learned about the onboard tradition of 'pixie dusting'. 5 The stunning adults-only Cove pool is one of the areas where parents can get some respite 5 The impressive 14-deck Disney Fantasy cruise liner lives up to it's name Experienced guests spread the Disney love by leaving little goodie bags filled with either soft toys, door magnets or smaller knick-knacks on fish extenders attached to neighbouring cabin doors. They don't expect anything in return. It's simply a gesture of goodwill. The magic continued up on the top deck where many of my days were spent flopped on a sunbed, soaking up rays and tucking into ice cream, all while watching Disney favourites on the outdoor screen where films are played on rotation from morning til night. To cool off, there are three small pools, one of which is adults-only, and the famous AquaDuck — a 765-foot long water coaster, which features on several ships in the fleet. Or you can head inside to watch one of the West End-style productions in the onboard theatre. I saw amazing shows like Aladdin and Frozen as well as Disney's Believe, a musical exclusive to Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream which didn't leave a dry eye in the room. If that's not enough Disney for you, guests can get stuck into themed evenings, including a formal night where fans waltzed around in glittering ballgowns, as well as pirate night. Although, to my relief, you won't be judged if dress-up isn't your thing. I was having so much fun on board, I'd almost forgotten that we would soon be docking in a new destination. My trip started in Barcelona and we'd had an action-packed day at sea before arriving at the first stop, Civitavecchia, a quiet costal town an hour away from Italy's bustling Rome. 5 A stop off in Italy allowed Alice to see the famous landmark of the Leaning Tower of Pisa Credit: Alice Penwill Then it was on to the port of Livorno where I joined an excursion into Pisa. Soon, I was standing outside of the famous Leaning Tower, snapping away with my hands held up, replicating the famous leaning pose. Despite being the most recognisable view, the tower still didn't compare to the one at the next stop, Genoa. From D'Albertis Castle, a fortress carved into the hillside, I was able to look out over pastel-toned buildings, backed by rugged mountains, with the sea in the distance. Those who have the energy can climb their way to the top on foot but I chose to take the funicular. Our final stop was Toulon in France's Provence region, a haven for wine lovers and the perfect place to toast our Disney adventure. If Disneyland is the happiest place in the world, then the Disney Fantasy must be the happiest place on the Mediterranean Sea. Jamie Borthwick's EastEnders job 'at serious risk' over Strictly disabled slur
EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick recently apologised for using a disabled slur. It has been reported his job at the soap is at risk over the scandal EastEnders star Jamie Borthwick's job at the long-running soap is reportedly at risk after he used a derogatory term about disabled people. The 30-year-old actor, who has appeared on EastEnders since 2006, in which he plays Jay Brown, reportedly used offensive language in a video that was allegedly shared with friends. It was reported that the star was recorded using a derogatory word to describe locals in Blackpool, where BBC show Strictly Come Dancing filmed a glitzy live episode from the Blackpool Tower Ballroom. The word he used is a derogatory term regarded as a disabled slur. The star sparked condemnation from the disability charity Scope and a local politician in Blackpool. It is reported that footage was made of Jamie using the word, which was then sent to one of his friends. He has since issued a grovelling apology for using the offensive slur. An insider claimed how his character hasn't been part of a 'central role in the show for a while'. 'And with a new boss in Ben Wadey who only recently took the helm and with the scandal taking place so soon into his tenure feeling is that Jamie's place on the show could be at serious risk," the source claimed to The Sun. He recently issued a grovelling apology which had been shared by The Sun on Sunday, stating: 'I want to apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for the words I used in the video showing my reaction to making it through Blackpool week on Strictly. 'I am deeply sorry for any offence and upset my words and actions have caused. It is no excuse, but I did not fully understand the derogatory term I used and its meaning. That is on me completely. 'Now I am aware, I am deeply embarrassed to have used the term and directed it in the way I did. It was wrong." He went on to issue an apology to the people of Blackpool and reiterate his regret over his words. After the publication claimed that he was suspended from EastEnders, a BBC spokesperson told The Mirror: "This language is entirely unacceptable and in no way reflects the values or standards we hold and expect at the BBC. "We have robust processes in place for this.' Last year, Jamie appeared on Strictly where he was paired with professional dancer Michelle Tsiakkas. They featured alongside Go Compare opera singer Wynne Evans, 53, who sparked scandal over his actions on the show.

Major Hollywood star emerges as shock favourite for huge James Bond role amid speculation over who will be the next 007 after Amazon's takeover
A shock contender has emerged as the bookies' favourite to play the villain in the highly-anticipated next instalment of James Bond. Film-lovers have been patiently waiting to find out when the new 007 movie will be released since Daniel Craig finished his five film stint as the British spy with No Time To Die. The 2021 movie was the last spearheaded by Bond producer of 30 years Barbara Broccoli and her brother Michael G. Wilson after Amazon took over 'creative control' of the much-loved franchise. The company are said to be fast-tracking the new film, with Hollywood producers David Heyman and Amy Pascal hired to bring in the new era of Bond. Despite no official announcements being made, speculation about the potential cast for the next movie has been heating up in recent weeks. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the British fan favourites Aaron-Taylor Johnson and Henry Cavill have been linked to the role, while The White Lotus actor Theo James emerged as the latest bookies' favourite last month. Now, betting companies have released their odds for the next villain - with one unexpected household name topping the list. The favourite is none other than Peaky Blinders star Cillian Murphy, 49, who sits at the top of OLBG's odds at 9/2. The Irish actor - best known for playing Thomas Shelby - had previously been touted for the part of Bond but played down speculation, telling Deadline: 'I think I'm a bit old for that.' Also in the running for the part are American actor Paul Giamatti (11/2), The Boogeyman star David Dastmalchian (13/2), and unlikely contender Zendaya (7/1). Despite 'usually playing the good guy' in her previous roles, the female actress told Elle in 2023 that she's ready to enter her villainous era. 'I would love to play a villain of sorts,' the 28-year-old said. 'Tap into the evil, supervillain vibes. Whatever that manifests in, I don't think necessarily in a superhero sense, I just mean in like an emotional sense. 'I feel like I usually play the good guy, so I'd like to play the bad guy.' Cillian Murphy remains the strong favourite for the role, with Betting Expert Jake Ashton backing the Irish star too. 'The villain role in the Bond movies is just as iconic as Bond himself,' he said. 'With Cillian Murphy at the height of his powers and trusted by major directors, he's a natural favourite.' No Time To Die saw Oscar winner Rami Malek star as its lead antagonist Lyutsifer Safin, a terrorist chief and scientist driven by a desire to dismantle the criminal group SPECTRE. Before him A-lister Christoph Waltz starred as the villain in Spectre and Javier Bardem played Raoul Silva in Skyfall, an antagonist described as 'up there with the great' Bond baddies. After Daniel Craig's James Bond died at the end of No Time To Die, speculation has been rife as to how the next film will begin. As The Daily Mail reported, the plan is for the new Bond to be a 'straight up' reboot. There is reportedly set to be no explanation of how the special agent is still alive, no multiverse of Bonds and no attempt to go back to the 1960s for a vintage Bond. Barbara Broccoli's choice for Bond was thought to be Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who was once favourite for the role, but Heyman and Pascal are likely to want to choose their own 007. Theo James currently sits at favourite for the part at 3/1, ahead of Superman actor Cavill (3/1), Taylor-Johnson (7/2) and Jack Lowden (12/1) from Mary Queen of Scots. Theo has impressed while playing rogue, morally ambiguous characters somewhat similar to Bond in both The White Lotus and Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen. Theo had been one of the frontrunners for the role a couple of years ago but was bumped down odds lists after an interview in The Guardian in 2024. He told the publication: 'Everyone's interested in playing Bond because it's a big part of British cultural identity, but that probably wouldn't be me. 'I do think there are better people for that job. And honestly it would be terrifiyng... you're opening Pandora's Box.' Amazon bosses are currently said to be considering locations in which to set the much-anticipated new film, which experts predicted is likely to be released at the end of next year or in 2027. Due to a filming ban being imposed in Central London next year, new locations are reportedly being considered - with Liverpool a frontrunner, according to The Sun. An insider told the publication: 'This will no doubt irk Bond purists who already fear Amazon taking over the 007 franchise may lead to them making big changes. 'But Liverpool is a well-known alternative to London for film-makers. 'It has appeared in everything from The Batman to Captain America and Harry Potter movies, doubling up as international cities.' The source added that it doesn't necessarily mean the story will be set in Liverpool - though eagle-eyed Merseysiders will no doubt spot their city centre in the background.
