Jane Street's regulatory woes may have just begun: Sebi lens is now on Sensex options
So far, the Securities and Exchange Board of India's (Sebi) interim order of 3 July has focused on 21 instances of Jane Street trades on the highly liquid but now-discontinued Bank Nifty weekly options and the Nifty weekly options between 1 January 2023 and 31 March 2025. The firm allegedly made illegal gains of ₹4,844 crore in these trades, largely at the expense of individual investors, according to Sebi.
"The investigation is ongoing and would not be limited to the NSE indices, but would also include the Sensex options, whose popularity soared in the past two financial years," said one of the persons cited earlier, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
According to the second person, who also didn't want to be identified, "Sensex options have gained market share in recent years and by that token, trades here too would not escape regulatory attention for any possible instances of manipulation by the JS Group."
From January 2023 to March 2025, Jane Street group's total profit from trading index stocks and derivatives, and cash market was ₹36,502.12 crore. Sebi has ordered the seizure of ₹4,844 crore of the total so far even as its investigation into alleged manipulation continues. Jane Street is expected to respond to Sebi's order in the coming days.
Queries emailed to Sebi on its investigation into Jane Street's trading patterns on Sensex options remained unanswered until press time. BSE Ltd declined to comment.
While Nifty and Bank Nifty enjoyed huge popularity among options traders, including individuals and proprietary participants, the Sensex was the third most popular options index, distantly followed by Finnifty and Midcap Nifty.
To offer context, the market share of NSE in equity options based on premium turnover stood at 96.9% as of November 2023, with BSE options accounting for the rest, according to exchange data. As recently as May this year, BSE had eaten into NSE's share, garnering 20.6% of the options market, with its larger rival holding 79.4%.
However, with the likelihood of a further clampdown by Sebi in light of the Jane Street fiasco, sentiment has taken a beating with BSE shares falling 2.3% to ₹2,466.30 on Thursday. With this, the BSE stock is hovering around a bearish market, having plunged 18.6% from a 52-week high of ₹3,030 on 10 June to date. NSE is unlisted.
A 5-10% fall from a high is a pullback; a 10-20% decline is a correction; and a stock or an index enters the bear market after plunging more than 20% from a peak.
"There is a likelihood of a revision in expiry schedule of index options to one fortnightly index expiry from two weekly expiries currently, which is dampening sentiment as reflected in the fall of the BSE share," said Rajesh Palviya, SVP (derivatives &technical head of research) at Axis Securities. 'The Jane Street impact is likely to continue with the ongoing investigation."
Currently, Nifty options expire on Thursday and Sensex options on Tuesday.
Sebi had clamped down on the index options segment last October to rein in retail frenzy, which was resulting in outsized losses for small individual investors.
Among the key changes were reducing the number of weekly expiries to one per exchange, effective November last year; and increasing the contract lot size to ₹15-20 lakh from ₹5-10 lakh from December-January.

Forged SEBI documents used to sell seized land, 2 held
Jaipur: City police Wednesday arrested two men for allegedly using forged SEBI documents to sell govt-seized land in Bagru. SHO (Bajaj Nagar) Poonam Choudhary said Pramod Kumar Tated, 49, of Jodhpur, and Shravan alias Suresh Ranwa, 40, of Sikar, were arrested following a probe during which forged documents and fake SEBI seals were recovered from them. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Choudhary said the scam involved land seized by central agencies from PACL (Pearls Agrotech Corporation Ltd) marked by SEBI for investor repayments. The accused used forged paperwork to falsely claim these plots were available for private sale. During questioning, Tated admitted to creating the fake documents and passing them off as authorised SEBI papers. His associate Ranwa was arrested soon after his name surfaced. Police said the PACL properties were seized by the CBI and ED, and were to be sold only under supervision of a Supreme Court-appointed committee headed by a retired judge. The accused browsed SEBI's publicly available property listings and used the details to fabricate sale deeds. Fake seals were allegedly procured from Delhi. Land records were tampered with by another associate. The fraud came to light after the accused sold a plot in Bagru to one Amit Kumar for Rs 98.47 lakh. They received a Rs 14.77 lakh demand draft in SEBI's name, but instead of depositing it in the official SEBI account, they encashed it through a cooperative bank in Sirsa, Haryana, using an account linked to an associate named Sandeep. Police suspect that some bank employees may have facilitated the transaction.

4 teachers, BSE staffer among 6 arrested for special OTET paper leak
Bhubaneswar: The state crime branch blew the lid off the alleged question paper leak of the special Odisha Teacher Eligibility Test (OTET), leading to the arrest of six men, including four teachers, on Wednesday. Jitan Moharana, an employee of the Board of Secondary Education (BSE), which set the exam questions for in-service teachers, was among those arrested. The examination, originally scheduled for July 20, was postponed after leaked questions surfaced on social media platforms hours before the test. BSE had lodged a complaint with the crime branch the same day. DG (crime branch) Vinaytosh Mishra said that prime suspect Moharana, a data entry operator with the BSE, allegedly obtained the questions by illegally accessing the laptop of the board's vice-president Nihar Ranjan Mohanty. Moharana subsequently distributed the papers to his accomplices: Bijay Kumar Mishra, Sanatan Bisoi, Ramjee Prasad Gupta, Ajay Kumar Sahoo and Jayant Kumar Rout. Gupta worked as a broker, while the other accused are teachers. The accused reportedly sold the leaked papers to several in-service temporary and permanent teachers seeking qualification for various govt benefits, including job regularisation, promotion and salary hike. Sources said Bijay Kumar reportedly enticed Moharana to get hold of the question papers and lured him with substantial money. Crime branch said some more teachers who purchased the leaked papers to pass the test after previous unsuccessful attempts are likely to be arrested. "Our initial financial investigation revealed payments through bank transfers and cash transactions. Moharana received Rs 2.5 lakh in his account from various teachers. We are currently examining the co-accused's accounts," Mishra said. DIG (crime branch) B Gangadhar said that they have confiscated electronic devices, including mobile phones, and leaked question papers from the accused. Investigation revealed the network operated across multiple districts, selling examination papers for substantial sums to candidates. Crime branch attributed the leak to the BSE vice-president's negligence. "He was not involved in the wrongdoing but his failure to implement proper security measures enabled Moharana access to his laptop," another crime branch officer said.
