Jones impressed by Pressley's 'detail and principles'

BBC Newsa day ago
Midfielder Callum Jones believes Dundee's form will "definitely" turn around under "really impressive" head coach Steven Pressley. The Dark Blues have made a disappointing start to the season, crashing out of the League Cup in the group stages and losing their Premiership opener at home to Hibernian last weekend.Jones, who arrived from Hull City last month as one of eight new faces at Dens Park so far this summer, has backed manager Pressely to turn the tide in their favour. The 24-year-old said: "We are new, everyone is new, I think the gaffer's detail is really good, the principles that he wants and shows."Obviously everyone doesn't get to see that, but as a player I have worked with quite a lot of managers and the detail the gaffer wants is really impressive."It is not going to come out straight away in the first game, but Hibs are an established team, they have been together for a long time, big budget, and I don't think they really put us to the test too much."They won the game, but we never really looked out of shape, I think we were comfortable and compact and the units were exactly what we wanted."Obviously we want more going forward, which is fine, me included, but it will definitely come."Given the way the campaign has started, unsurprisingly, a number of Dundee supporters are unhappy at the current situation. On the fans' frustration, Jones said: "I know from previous places I have been, I have been hated one week then I have scored the next week and I have been a fan favourite, so it is how it is."It changes but they are right to have their opinion because they come and pay for the games and it is our job to try and change that opinion and get them onside."I definitely think they supported us at the weekend, and I am sure the more the season goes on and the better we do, then they will stay behind us."

St Mirren 0-0 Motherwell: What Robinson said

St Mirren manager Stephen Robinson tells BBC Scotland: "It was a poor game overall. We certainly weren't at our best today. "Motherwell passed the ball around a lot in their own half of the pitch without really getting anywhere and I take responsibility for it."We overthought the press a little bit and they were expecting us to press with real positivity and I don't think we did. But I take the blame for that. We probably complicated it a little bit. On the ball, as a group, we can be a lot better."But we still had the best chances of the game and arguably should win the game. There's improvement all round. Keanu Baccus was excellent. I thought Miguel Freckleton was excellent as well. Some good performances and others that can be a lot better, which they know."We knew they'd play a lot at the back. I imagine they expected us to press them more aggressively than what we did and, as I say, I take full responsibility for that. I may have complicated that a little bit more than we needed to, instead of just pressing in a straight line. We'd spoken about that at half-time. It was better in the second half."We took the ball off them on lots of occasions, high up the pitch, but we didn't take advantage of that press, unfortunately, and probably a draw is a fair result in the outcome."Even though we didn't play well, there was half-chances, there was decent chances. Our decision-making as a group has to be better and will be better."We're a more creative team than what we showed and players will play better than what they showed today. We know that. But, all in all, we take a point."

St Mirren 0-0 Motherwell: What Askou said

Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou told BBC Scotland: "We did amazing, the two centre-backs were outstanding, totally cancelled their game and it felt like we won almost every second ball in the game. A big performance."We know we have to be more effective and some of the opportunities we had. We had not many - a few - they also had a few, mainly on set pieces and a few shots from distance which Calum dealt with perfectly."But we played some really good football at times in difficult conditions. The pitch is actually really, really good but obviously it was dry in the first half and a lot of wind from all sorts of directions so there were some odd situations now and then when the ball went up in the air that were hard to judge. "But I think, again, fantastic performance, fantastic support, 900 Motherwell fans coming here and supporting us."On struggles in front of goal: "I wouldn't call it a lack of creativity, I thought we tried different stuff but also we have to give credit to St Mirren as well. It's a team that's been in top six the last two years and you saw last time against Celtic that they also had difficulty in opening them up."It's a team that's going to be very hard to beat, they're well organised, they're good one against one, they have a fantastic defensive mindset and so we knew it was going to be difficult to get the chances, to play the chances really big. "We tried our best and we know we need to improve in that phase and get even sharper, and had we been a little bit sharper in a few of these situations today, we could also have decided the game and made it tip our way. We'll keep working on that of course."
