Tamil Nadu poet's ‘Lord Ram lost his mind' remark sparks row; BJP reacts
A speech by a Tamil lyricist and poet Vairamuthu on Lord Ram at a literary programme has sparked political controversy, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing him of hurting Hindu sentiments. Vairamuthu sparks row with 'Lord Ram lost his mind' remarks(File Photo) Speaking at an event where he received an award named after medieval Tamil poet Kambar, who authored the Tamil version of the epic Ramayana, Vairamuthu said Lord Ram 'lost his mind' after separating from his wife, Goddess Sita. Vairamuthu said, 'After being separated from Sita, Ram lost his mind, not knowing what he was doing. Under the IPC (Indian Penal Code) Section 84, an act committed by a person due to mental derangement or unsoundness of mind does not constitute an offence.' "Kamban may not have known the law, but he knew society and the human mind," he said in the event with Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin in attendance. "Ram is fully acquitted, forgiven – making Ram a human being, and Kamban divine," he added. Reacting to the remarks, BJP leader CR Kesavan posted on X: 'Vairamuthu Ramasamy is a disgusting repeat offender when it comes to insulting sacred Hindu deities and grossly abusing Hindu Dharma. Now Vairamuthu who ironically in his name has 'Rama' perversely misinterpreting the Kamba Ramayana has called Lord Rama mentally unstable.'

Even best policies will fail if officials are not sincere: Telangana Dy CM Bhatti
HYDERABAD: Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka said Telangana should produce the highest number of Civil Services selections, stressing that human resources are the strongest investments and, if polished like diamonds, can greatly benefit society. He noted that under Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy's leadership, the government is providing financial aid to Civil Services aspirants to help them achieve their goals. On Monday, Vikramarka distributed cheques of `1 lakh each to 178 candidates who qualified for the Civil Services Examination (Mains) under Singareni Collieries Company Limited's Rajiv Gandhi Civils Abhaya Hastam scheme. He said the scheme, implemented for the second consecutive year, aims to encourage and instil confidence in aspirants. Apart from the current 178 Mains-qualified candidates, those shortlisted for interviews will also receive Rs 1 lakh and accommodation in Delhi. Last year, 148 candidates received assistance, with 10 securing selection into the Civil Services. Highlighting the crucial role of bureaucracy in upholding democracy, he said the Civil Services offer the chance to transform people's living conditions. Of the many officers who have served the state, only a few — such as SR Shankaran, Parthasarathy and Madhav Rao — are remembered for their dedication. 'Government welfare and development schemes, both state and Union, can only succeed if they reach the people in full,' he said. 'If officials lack sincerity, even the best policies will fail to yield results.'

'Unacceptable': BJP Hits Out At Tamil Poet For ‘Lord Ram Lost His Mind' Remark
Last Updated: The remarks have since sparked a heated political row, with the BJP demanding accountability from the state's leadership and condemning the poet for statements The Tamil Nadu BJP has strongly criticised noted lyricist and poet Vairamuthu over his recent remarks on Lord Ram, accusing him of hurting religious sentiments and questioning Chief Minister M K Stalin's silence on the matter. State BJP president Nainar Nagendran said the comments were 'unacceptable" and asked whether the Chief Minister endorsed them. Party spokesperson Narayanan Thirupathy called Vairamuthu 'a fool" and 'someone who has lost his mind," while the party described him as a 'repeat offender," recalling past remarks on Andal, a revered Hindu Goddess, which had drawn widespread criticism. The controversy erupted after Vairamuthu's speech at an event organised by the Kamban Kazhagam, where he was conferred an award named after the ancient Tamil poet Kambar, author of the Tamil Ramayana. Speaking in the presence of Chief Minister Stalin and former Union Minister S. Jagathrakshagan, Vairamuthu said that after being separated from Sita, Lord Ram lost his mental balance and acted without awareness. Citing Section 84 of the Indian Penal Code, which states that acts committed in a state of mental unsoundness are not considered crimes, Vairamuthu argued that Kambar, though unaware of the law, understood human nature and absolved Ram of blame. He said this interpretation rendered Ram human while elevating Kambar to a divine status. The remarks have since sparked a heated political row, with the BJP demanding accountability from the state's leadership and condemning the poet for statements it says offend religious beliefs. view comments First Published: August 12, 2025, 13:01 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
