Got the scoop: Bear takes over California ice cream shop
A curious bear on the hunt for something sweet found itself behind the counter of a California ice cream shop over the weekend. The big animal appeared to be making itself right at home when sheriff's deputies turned up to investigate in the resort city of South Lake Tahoe early Sunday. Officers shooed the ursine server out of the shop, but not before snapping a few pictures of their encounter. "With some encouragement, the bear ultimately left, but only after showing interest in the strawberry ice cream," said a post on the Facebook page of El Dorado County Sheriff's Office. "Thankfully, Fuzzy the bear caused barely any property damage and there was barely any cleanup." Bears are common in California and frequently go looking for food in human settlements, including entering homes or vehicles. Attacks on people are rare, but the animals can sometimes cause damage, especially when they cannot find a way out. hg

'He's trying to rig the election.' Newsom bashes Trump as redistricting campaign kicks off
Moments after California lawmakers passed a plan designed to undercut attempts by the president and fellow Republicans to keep control of Congress, Gov. Gavin Newsom said the state's proposed partisan redistricting that favors Democrats is a necessary counterweight to President Trump's threat to American democracy. Trump's assault on vote by mail and decision to send the military into U.S. cities are evidence of his authoritarian policies, and California must do its part to keep him in check, Newsom said. By deploying federal immigration agents in roving street raids and activating thousands of members of the National Guard in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., Newsom said, Trump is amassing "a private army for Donald Trump." "He's trying to rig the election, he's trying to set up the conditions where he can claim that the elections were not won fair and square," Newsom said. "Open your eyes to what is going on in the United States of America in 2025." The argument is a preview of the messaging for the ballot measure campaign that Newsom and his Democratic Party allies will be running over the next 74 days. On Thursday, California lawmakers signed off on a Nov. 4 special election that will put partisan redistricting in front of California voters. The ballot measure, called Proposition 50, will ask voters to discard the congressional boundaries drawn by the state's independent redistricting commission in 2021 in favor of partisan districts that could boot as many as five California Republicans out of Congress. "When all things are equal, and we're all playing by the same set of rules," Newsom said, "there's no question that the Republican Party will be the minority party in the House of Representatives next year." California is "responding to what occurred in Texas, we're neutralizing what occurred, and we're giving the American people a fair chance," Newsom said. National Republican Congressional Committee Chair Rep. Richard Hudson of North Carolina accused Newsom of trying to "rig" the system to advance his own political career. "Instead of fixing the homelessness, crime, drug, and cost crises crushing the Golden State, Gavin Newsom is tearing up California's Constitution to advance his presidential ambitions," Hudson said in a statement. California's new lines would neutralize efforts in Texas to redraw their congressional district maps to help elect five more GOP candidates in 2026. The Texas Legislature is expected to approve new district lines this week. The other option, Newsom said, is for California and Democrats to "roll over and do nothing." "I think people all across the country are going to campaign here in California for this," Newsom said. "They recognize what's at stake. It's not just about the state of California. It accuses the London-based company, which had only Los Angeles County as a client for the 2020 election, of exaggerating its claims of damages in the hope of receiving a financial windfall. Pirro now working in the second Trump administration The focus on Pirro is noteworthy because the former Fox personality Smartmatic, relying on emails and text messages revealed as part of the case, said Pirro was using her position as a Fox host in 2020 to help Trump and persuade him to pardon her ex-husband, Albert Pirro, who was convicted of conspiracy and tax evasion. Trump pardoned him before leaving office in 2021. Advertisement In a text to then-Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel in September 2020, Pirro said, 'I'm the No. 1 watched show on news cable all weekend. I work so hard for the President and the party,' Smartmatic said in court papers. One of her own producers, Jerry Andrews, called Pirro a 'reckless maniac,' Smartmatic said. He texted after one of her shows in November that it was 'rife (with) conspiracy theories and bs and is yet another example of why this woman should never be on live television.' Please please please overturn this. Bring the evidence, I know you can,' she texted to Powell. Dobbs, whose business show was canceled by Fox in February 2021, texted to Powell four days after the election, saying 'I'm going to do what I can to help stop what is now a coup d'etat in (its) final days — perhaps moments,' a reference to Biden's victory. Dobbs A central figure in Fox's 'pivot' Smartmatic portrayed Pirro as a central figure in Fox's 'pivot' to deemphasize Biden's victory because it angered Trump fans. Instead, the network found that ratings jumped whenever claims of election fraud were discussed, it said. Advertisement As in the Dominion case, the discovery process helped Smartmatic find messages and statements that seem embarrassing in retrospect. For example, in early December, Fox's Jesse Watters texted colleague Greg Gutfeld that 'Think of how incredible our ratings would be if Fox went ALL in on STOP THE STEAL.' Fox, in a response to the newly-revealed court papers, pointed to an ongoing corruption case involving Smartmatic and its executives, including a claim by federal prosecutors that it used money from the sale of voting machines to set up a 'slush fund' for bribing foreign officials. 'The evidence shows that Smartmatic's business and reputation were badly suffering long before any claims by President Trump's lawyers on Fox News and that Smartmatic grossly inflated its damage claims to generate headlines and chill free speech,' Fox said. 'Now, in the aftermath of Smartmatic's executives getting indicted for bribery charges, we are eager and ready to continue defending our press freedoms.'
