West Aurora School District support staff to get raises as part of new five-year contract

West Aurora School District 129's union office support staff will receive raises under a new five-year contract recently approved by the district's board.
The West Aurora school board recently approved the collective bargaining agreement with the West Aurora Office Professionals Union that represents approximately 100 workers in the district.
The agreement for clerical workers is effective July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2030.
Under terms of the contract, support staff will receive a $2 hourly wage increase plus a stipend based on the years of service to the district in the first year of the contract in 2025-26, West Aurora Director of Finance Ryan Abrahamson said in a summary of the terms.
In each of the next two years, office staff will receive 6% hourly wage increases. Then, in the final two years of the contract – 2028-29 and 2029-30 – office workers will receive 2.5% hourly wage increases plus a hike set at half of the Consumer Price Index inflation rate.
'This is a culmination of some hard work and more importantly collaboration,' West Aurora Associate Superintendent of Operations Angie Smith told the board.
West Aurora Office Professional Association President Stacy Krisch recognized members of the union's negotiating team.
'Through countless hours of preparation, we were able to present concrete ideas to the district negotiation team in what I believe to be the fastest negotiation process in history – a whopping three meetings,' Kirsch said. 'We collaborated, compromised together and came up with new ideas and ways to strengthen and improve our bargaining unit.'
The union leader recognized the district's negotiating team and the school board for its leadership.
'We thank the district negotiation team and the West Aurora School Board for your support of the West Aurora Office Professional Association and your dedication to ensuring we have the highest standards of working conditions in the area,' Kirsch said.
'West Aurora has become the leader for office professionals across the area with this new contract,' Kirsch said. 'We are thrilled with the overall positive reaction from our membership as well.'
Only three days of negotiations 'doesn't happen without organization,' Smith said, in recognizing the union negotiating team.
'A huge kudos to you and your team for having worked through all those things ahead of time so we make really productive use of our time. We did come up with some creative things that will help with some other unions as we negotiate down the road,' Smith said.
'This does position us well,' she said. 'We realize that often-times our office professionals are the first people that our students see and the first people parents deal with. It's really important to us that we honor them as the valuable members of our team that they are but also that we put some things in place to ensure the training that they need, the mentorship that they need are all there to make sure we can keep our team solid.'
Smith recognized the district's negotiating team as well.
'This really was a very collaborative process. We are excited to be done this far ahead. It is March and we already have an agreement for July 1,' Smith said.

On Tuesday, Trump's Department of Commerce announced it would be expanding the scope of the Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum—doubled to 50 percent in June—to include 407 new product categories, including wind turbines as well as their "parts and components." "As a result, the steel and aluminum content of these products will be subject to a duty rate of 50 percent," the department said in its announcement. Newsweek contacted the Commerce Department via email for further comment on the expanded tariff list. Why It Matters Trump has frequently railed against wind power projects on economic, environmental and aesthetic grounds—dubbing them the "worst form of energy, the most expensive form of energy" during a recent press conference. In addition to such criticisms, Trump has paused federal wind permits while ending tax credits that had supported renewable developments in the U.S., which experts believe could threaten the construction of these projects and the broader diversification of America's energy portfolio. What To Know In addition to the latest criticism, Trump attacked windmills as "stupid and ugly" in a Tuesday Truth Social post, before blaming them for energy bills rising in New Jersey. Trump provided no sources linking renewable power to the state's electricity prices or tying states' reliance on wind and solar to "record-breaking" cost hikes. According to the most recent estimates from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, renewable sources accounted for only around 8 percent of New Jersey's total generation in 2023, though the state aims to increase this to 50 percent by the end of the decade. Electricity costs have surged in recent months. According to the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), average electricity prices were 5.5 percent higher in July compared to a year prior. This has been attributed in part to surging loads from artificial intelligence data centers, as well as outmoded energy infrastructure. Renewable energy experts who spoke to Newsweek previously also believe provisions in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, signed into law by President Trump on July 4, could eventually lead to even higher costs as planned projects are postponed or abandoned. Scott Olson /While not directly tied to Trump's latest attack on windmills, the Commerce Department's announcement of a tariff hike on wind turbines could hold implications for those companies seeking to set up wind projects on U.S. soil. "Some of these goods are composed of steel and aluminum. Without these tariffs steel and aluminum products could be imported to the US at a low tariff rate," said Christopher M. Meissner, professor of economics, professor of economics at U.C. Davis. "In principle, this is an attempt to close loopholes and to direct producer demand for steel and aluminum to American producers." "Whatever the motivation, the end result, as is usual with such tariffs, will likely be that the cost of renewable energy coming from wind turbines will be higher in the American market," he told Newsweek. In addition to wind turbines, the Commerce Department will be hiking steel and aluminum tariffs for hundreds of goods, including mobile cranes, bulldozers, and railcars. The announcement followed a months-long comment period, during which outside parties were able to submit requests for products to be subject to the Section 232 duties. One of these came from the Wind Tower Trade Coalition, a group representing domestic manufacturers of utility-scale wind towers. The group requested that foreign-sourced wind turbines and towers be subject to the Section 232 tariffs as "imports of these derivative steel products threaten to impair U.S. national security." "Rising U.S. imports of low-priced wind towers have already caused significant harm to the domestic steel mill industry," the group said. "Specifically, these imports have forced domestic wind tower producers to purchase imports rather than domestic steel mill products, resulting in fewer sales for domestic steel mills." What People Are Saying Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security Jeffrey Kessler said on Tuesday: "Today's action expands the reach of the steel and aluminum tariffs and shuts down avenues for circumvention – supporting the continued revitalization of the American steel and aluminum industries." President Donald Trump, during a meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer in Scotland last month, said: "Wind is the most expensive form of energy. And it destroys the beauty of your fields and your plains and your waterways. And look, look out there — there's no windmills. But if you look in another direction, you see windmills. If, when we go to Aberdeen, you'll see some of the ugliest windmills you've ever seen. They're the height of a 50-story building. And you can take a thousand times more energy out of a hole in the ground... It's called oil and gas." Former Deputy Commerce Secretary Don Graves told Newsweek: "A significant factor in US economic success has been the clarity, transparency and predictability in our policies and laws that workers, businesses, innovators and investors use to make long-term decisions. These new tariffs are almost certainly political and will lead to significant increases in costs to American businesses and consumers." Christopher M. Meissner, professor of economics at U.C. Davis, told Newsweek: "These [tariffs] add enormous complexity to the business environment. What is likely is that consumer prices will go up, costs for 'downstream' producers or users of the covered products will go up, and employment in these industries will grow more slowly. Some local American producers of competing products may see a rise in order flow and revenue. It will be interesting to watch the adjustment process – moving workers from the downstream industries that are hurt to the protected industries that are benefitting. What we have learned from the past is that this process or adjustment can be slow and it is likely to be economically costly." What Happens Next? In addition to steel and aluminum, the Commerce Department has launched Section 232 investigations into the impact of other imports on U.S. national security, potentially paving the way for tariff hikes on semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and other goods.

UK inflation rose by more than expected in July as demand for summer travel pushed up air fares and food prices continued to climb. According to official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation rate increased to 3.8 per cent in July, from 3.6 per cent in June. The ONS said the rise in inflation was driven by a jump in transport prices, particularly airfares as families jetted off on holiday, and a spike in food prices, with food inflation jumping to 4.9 per cent in July from 4.5 per cent in June as supermarkets faced pressure from global supply chain disruptions and economic uncertainty closer to home. Core inflation, which strips out the more volatile items such as food, alcohol and tobacco, also edged up in the 12 months to July to 3.8 per cent from 3.7 per cent in June. 'An uptick in inflation can be a cause for concern for consumers as it signals ever-higher prices for everyday essentials. This erodes purchasing power, especially for lower-income households, who spend a larger proportion of their income on necessities. 'Add to that the extended freeze on income tax thresholds, which means more of people's earnings are dragged deeper into taxable territory as wages rise - and even a modest increase in inflation can feel unsettling.' The Bank of England expects headline inflation to peak at 4 per cent in September, a forecast that has dampened hopes of another interest rate cut in the near term. Stubborn inflation and concerns over the health of the nation's public finances have led markets to believe that rates may stay higher for longer. However, there are no guarantees. Ms Haines explained: 'The good news is that inflation is expected to ease after September, perhaps with a few blips along the way, though how quickly that will translate into lower borrowing costs remains uncertain - especially with external pressures such as global trade pressures and geopolitical uncertainty still in play. 'What is evident is that wage growth is easing, the jobs market is stalling - as businesses grapple with higher employment costs - and a more subdued growth picture is expected to persist. Any tax increases in the Autumn Budget could further weigh on those prospects.' Impact on household bills The personal finance expert said: 'For consumers facing high household bills or job security concerns, the best defence strategy is a strong financial foundation. 'Living within your means, pausing big-ticket purchases, cancelling unused subscriptions, cutting non-essential expenditure, shifting expensive debts to a 0 per cent balance transfer credit card and building up emergency savings can all help households stay resilient in a high-inflation environment.' Impact on mortgages Ms Haines explained: 'Mortgaged homeowners and first-time buyers may feel disheartened by the latest inflation reading. Rising inflation can dent affordability and reduce their borrowing power, making it harder to secure a mortgage or move up the property ladder.' She continued: 'Rising inflation also puts a spanner in the works for those hoping for mortgage rates to ease more dramatically. Persistent price pressures may cause the central bank to delay further easing. While affordability has improved for buyers in recent months, thanks to lower mortgage rates and lenders relaxing their stress test rules, rates may not be easing as fast as people hoped. 'For existing borrowers looking to refinance, their future repayments will depend on when they secured their current deal. Those emerging from short-term fixes, taken out when rates were high, could find better deals now. But borrowers nearing the end of ultra-low, five-year fixes could face a sharp jump in their monthly repayments, unless they've managed to clear a sizeable chunk of their outstanding balance.' Impact on Savings Ms Haines warned: 'An uptick in inflation won't be welcomed by savers. While higher inflation may slow the pace at which top savings rates disappear - assuming interest rate cuts are delayed - the downside is that rising prices erode the real value of returns. 'Savings rates have already eased back significantly following five BoE rate cuts since last summer - a trend presenting a major challenge for real returns. The bigger issue is the post-tax net return on cash holdings, which is becoming increasingly problematic as more people are dragged into higher tax bands due to frozen personal thresholds.' She added: 'With savings rates likely to fall back further in the months ahead, shopping around for the best deal is key. Rates may be easing, but they remain competitive, which is why savers with sizeable pots must still pay close attention to their Personal Savings Allowance (PSA). 'Higher rate taxpayers only have a £500 personal savings allowance before they must pay tax on the interest they earn - half that of a basic rate taxpayer - while additional rate taxpayers have no allowance at all. This creates a growing tax headache as interest income rises, which is why a tax-efficient savings strategy is a must.'
