Germany: Court to rule on press freedom for banned magazine

In July 2024, then Interior Minister Nancy Faeser banned
Compact
magazine. She justified the move, saying: "It's a central mouthpiece for the right-wing extremist scene. This magazine incites against Jews, people with ethnic migrant backgrounds and against our parliamentary democracy in the most abhorrent way.
"
Compact sees itself as part of 'resistance movement'
A 2023 report from the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV), Germany's domestic intelligence agency, features an entire page dedicated to
Compact
— a magazine and multimedia company headquartered in Falkensee, on the outskirts of Berlin.
According to the BfV, the magazine's publisher says it sells 40,000 print copies a month. The number of subscribers to the
Compact
YouTube channel is significantly higher, at 513,000 as of June 10, 2025.
"
Compact
sees itself as part of what it calls the resistance movement, and it is seen by other actors among the so-called new right as part of the scene," the BfV wrote. "The main feature of many of its published articles is agitation against the federal government and against the current political system."
Ties to extremist Identitarian movement
Examples cited by the BfV include abstruse conspiracy theories used to agitate against state institutions and pluralist society.

"Historic revisionist content and antisemitic narratives round out the agenda," it added.
Moreover, the report said, the outfit maintains ties with right-wing extremist groups like the German Identitarian movement (IBD) and the eastern German regional party the "Freie Sachsen," or Free Saxons.
Faeser said the message was clear — we will not allow anyone to define who does and does not belong in Germany by their ethnicity.
"Our constitutional state protects all those who have been attacked because of their religion, their origins, their skin colour or their desire to live in a democracy," she said last July.
Faeser wanted to send a signal
Faeser leaned heavily on the constitution, Germany's Basic Law, in calling for the right-wing extremist publication to be banned. Article 9 of the Basic Law, which regulates freedom of assembly, reads: "Associations whose aims or activities contravene the criminal laws or that are directed against the constitutional order or the concept of international understanding shall be prohibited."
Compact's editor-in-chief, Jürgen Elsässer, is a suspected right-wing extremist who belonged to the far left as a young man. Now in his 60s, Elsässer was once a member of the Communist Youth Wing and wrote for the newspaper,
Arbeiterkampf
(
The Workers' Fight
). He later worked as a reporter for other left-wing media, including
Neue Deutschland
(New Germany), which was a key news organ for the socialist East German government when the country was still partitioned.
Compact can publish until final verdict
Elsässer and other plaintiffs fought the ban on his media operations before the Federal Administrative Court in Leipzig. He was partially successful in August 2024 when it was determined that he could continue publishing
Compact
until a final verdict had been handed down. In granting its stay, the court said the outcome of the case remained unclear as it had yet to be determined whether
Compact
had acted against the constitutional order.
The court did, however, immediately find evidence of violations of human dignity in which citizens with migrant backgrounds were demeaned. Notwithstanding, it also voiced doubt as to whether that was enough to justify a ban. For that would represent the most serious intervention possible regarding speech and press freedoms guaranteed in Article 5 of the Basic Law.
Where does press freedom begin and end?
Still, Article 5 does put some limits on speech, saying, "These rights shall find their limits in the provisions of general laws, in provisions for the protection of young persons and in the right to personal honour."
The trial to define where press freedoms in Germany begin and end will start on June 10. It's unclear when a decision will be handed down.

Shiv Sena (UBT) blocks traffic in Sambhajinagar in last leg of ‘Kya Hua Tera Wada' agitation

Chhatrapti Sambhajinagar: Shiv Sena (UBT) faction organised a chakka jam protest during the final phase of its 'Kya Hua Tera Wada' agitation on Thursday. The Sena (UBT) workers demanded comprehensive loan waivers for farmers and called for the BJP-led Mahayuti govt to fulfil all pre-election commitments. The campaign, which commenced on June 6, sought to hold the govt accountable for promises made by BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP before the elections. Ambadas Danve, the leader of the opposition in state legislative council, headed the demonstration at Baba Petrol Pump Chowk in the city. Demonstrators blocked major city access routes, including those from Ahilyanagar, the railway station, central bus stand, and Kranti Chowk, causing traffic disruptions for hours. The protest saw hundreds of Shiv Sainiks, office-bearers, and farmers participating. Police maintained strict security. Officers subsequently detained the protesters and transported them to Kranti Chowk police station. Following legal procedures, they were released with instructions to avoid future protests that might inconvenience the public. At the demonstration, Danve criticised Mahayuti for allegedly failing the farmers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "Mahayuti govt has failed to deliver on its promises to farmers made before the assembly elections. Farmers are reeling under debt, and govt is turning a blind eye. We demand immediate implementation of the 10-point scheme announced during the campaign," he said. Shiv Sena deputy district chief Santosh Jejurkar came wearing traditional clothing similar to Mahatma Jyotiba Phule, including a pink turban, dhoti, and kurta. He carried Phule's book 'Asud' about farmer exploitation, addressing agricultural challenges affecting both the Marathwada region and the entire state. Party officials said that additional protests would be organised across other districts if their demands remain unaddressed. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . Nashik district administration asks chief officers to start process of demarcation of wards in councils

Nashik: The district administration has instructed the chief officers of nine municipal councils to initiate ward demarcation processes for upcoming elections without delay. "As per the instructions from state govt, the work of forming the wards and other things will be handled by state govt, and the conduct of the elections will be carried out by state election commission. State govt has now chalked out the time-bound programme for the same," said a senior officer from the district collectorate. Council chief officers need to establish teams of enumerators by June 16 to perform fundamental electoral tasks, including voter registration, numerical assessments and ward distribution. From June 17 until July 3, teams will prepare ward-wise maps through site visits, finalise boundaries and create detailed area maps showing adjacent ward information, according to the officer. Subsequently, draft plans of council ward structures will be forwarded to the state election commission (SEC) for approval. The SEC-approved ward system will be published in the media by July 15, allowing citizens to submit claims and objections. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pistol de sudură laser multifuncțional siginificant Află mai multe Undo "The collector or the officer designated by him will listen to the claims and objections from July 22 to 31 and then send the finalised ward-wise plan for the final approval of the SEC in the first week of Aug. Andhra Pradesh government plans to set up international sports university, sports city in Vijayawada

1 2 Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh govt is planning to transform Amaravati into a sporting powerhouse with a sprawling sports city and international sports university in over 2,000 acres in Ibrahimpatnam in Vijayawada. Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) chairman A Ravi Naidu announced that the state is committed to positioning Amaravati as the 'sports capital' of India. Addressing the media on Thursday, Ravi Naidu said that a proposal to host the 2026 Khelo India Games in Vijayawada was submitted to the Centre, and it is expected to receive approval soon. He emphasised that this event could bring national attention to the region and elevate AP's status on the sports map. Highlighting local developments, the SAA chairman said that the Indira Gandhi Municipal Stadium in Vijayawada is being upgraded into a multi-disciplinary facility capable of hosting international-level events. The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has already committed ₹40 crore for its development, while the total estimated cost is around ₹70 crore. However, Ravi Naidu expressed concerns over VMC's demand for monthly rent, despite the stadium being intended for a nationally significant event. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This house on the South Downs coastline could be yours [Click here] Omaze Click Here Undo A formal appeal was made to the municipal administration minister to waive the rent, considering the larger public interest. The state is also planning to construct stadia in every assembly constituency and develop sports infrastructure in 46,000 govt schools with the help of the school education department. In a sharp political attack, Ravi Naidu criticised former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy for allegedly targeting the women of Amaravati. Referring to Jagan's call to mark the regime change as 'Backstab Day', he said it insulted the will of the people. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here .
