Minister: Batang Ai floating solar plant set for December launch
KUCHING (Aug 19): The state's floating solar power plant, including the 50-megawatt (MW) facility at the Batang Ai Dam, is scheduled to begin operations this December, said Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.
The Minister of Utility and Telecommunication said the facility only covers three per cent of the dam's surface area, leaving room for potential expansion to other hydro reseirvoirs such as Murum and Bakun.
'This initiative will attract foreign investors and help Sarawak achieve its vision of becoming a high-income state in the future,' he said when officiating the 10th edition of the Project Of Dream Realized (PRO-DR) Roadshow 2025 at the Dewan Pembangunan Sebuyau yesterday.
Julaihi, who is also Sebuyau assemblyman, said this added that the development reflects how technology and innovation, combined with Sarawak's natural resources, can drive economic growth.
'Not only that, this also proves that Sarawak is on the right track to becoming a green energy hub in the region and contributing to Malaysia's ambition of being the 'Battery of Asean',' he said.
Julaihi further noted that China's rapid development today was made possible through long-term investments in education, particularly in STEM and digital learning.
'Their progressive approach in education has enabled advances across industries. Likewise, it is not impossible for Sarawak to achieve rapid progress with a younger generation equipped with STEM and digital knowledge,' he stressed.
Digital innovation, he added, plays a crucial role in improving daily life easier for the people.
The PRO-DR programme was jointly organised by the Tabung Ekonomi Gagasan Anak Sarawak (Tegas), the Sarawak Education Department and various higher learning institutions. Batang Ai Dam floating solar project Julaihi Narawi

Trump targets the Smithsonian again for highlighting how bad slavery was
WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump suggested on Tuesday he will pressure the Smithsonian Institution - a premier museum, education and research complex for US history and culture - to accept his demands, just like he did with colleges and universities by threatening to cut federal funding. In a social media post, Trump complained about what he called excessive focus on "how bad Slavery was." "I have instructed my attorneys to go through the Museums, and start the exact same process that has been done with Colleges and Universities where tremendous progress has been made," Trump said on Truth Social. The Smithsonian, which was established in 1846 and includes 21 museums and galleries and the National Zoo, had no immediate comment. Most of its museums are in Washington, D.C. The White House said last week it will lead an internal review of some Smithsonian museums after Trump earlier this year accused it of spreading "anti-American ideology" and raised alarm among civil rights advocates. When asked if Trump would threaten funding cuts to the Smithsonian based on the findings, a White House official said "President Trump will explore all options and avenues to get the Woke out of the Smithsonian and hold them accountable." Trump wrote: "The Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future." The Smithsonian receives most of its budget from the US Congress but is independent of the government in decision-making. Civil rights advocates say Trump's administration is undoing decades of social progress and undermining the acknowledgment of critical phases of American history. Racial justice group Black Lives Matter said on X that Trump's post showed that he wanted to lock the country in a "fairytale" and deny the atrocities of slavery. Trump has made threats to cut federal funding of top US educational institutions, citing pro-Palestinian protests against US ally Israel's war in Gaza, transgender policies, climate initiatives and diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Last month, the government settled its probes with Columbia University, which agreed to pay US$221 million, and Brown University, which said it will pay US$50 million.

LBS posts RM55.3 million Patmi in 1H FY2025
PETALING JAYA: LBS Bina Group Berhad, a property developer, today announced its unaudited financial results for the second quarter ended June 30, 2025, which delivered a resilient performance amidst the Group's efforts to lay a solid foundation for its next wave of growth. The Group's revenue of RM309.8 million contributed to a profit after tax and minority interests (PATMI) of RM27.1 million in the quarter under review. This came on the back of some of the Group's projects, which had achieved completion or were nearing completion last year. The Group's township developments are expected to continue delivering steady contributions ahead. For the first half of 2025, LBS achieved a cumulative revenue of RM639.0 million, predominantly from the property development segment which contributed 95.5% of the total revenue. Consequently, LBS delivered a PATMI of RM55.3 million. Moving forward, LBS' sales performance remains creditable with total property sales and bookings of RM690.20 million and RM401.11 million respectively as of Aug 19, 2025. Klang Valley remains as the primary growth driver, led by its top performing township, LBS Alam Perdana, which registered the highest sales growth. Over the medium to long term, the Group's performance is expected to be further enhanced through the development rights agreement which was signed with Kwasa Land Sdn Bhd and its subsidiaries to develop 192.32 acres in Kwasa Damansara. Carrying a gross development value of approximately RM8.30 billion, the premium residential development will be executed in phases over 14 years, significantly entrenching LBS' presence in the Klang Valley. LBS Group executive chairman Tan Sri (Dr) Lim Hock San remarked, 'We are currently in a transition phase, preparing for the next wave of launches under our 8 x 8 Strategy alongside the transformative Kwasa Damansara Township. These initiatives, supported by our 3,780-acre landbank serve as growth drivers in our expansion journey. They will form a sustainable development pipeline that will underpin our growth over the medium to long term.' 'With RM1.33 billion in unbilled sales to be progressively recognised and healthy sales momentum in our core Klang Valley markets, we have strong earnings visibility ahead. Our established townships, KITA @ Cybersouth, LBS Alam Perdana, along with Prestige Residenceand Idaman projects, continue to perform well, reinforcing our competitive position and our ability to deliver long term value for shareholders,' he added.
