Sudan paramilitary attack killed 18 civilians: monitor

Arab News09-08-2025
KHARTOUM: Sudan's paramilitaries killed 18 civilians in an attack on two villages west of Khartoum earlier this week, a monitoring group said on Saturday. The attack occurred on Thursday in North Kordofan state, which is key to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces' fuel smuggling route from Libya. The area has been a major battleground between the army and the paramilitaries for months, and communications lines with the rest of the world have been mostly cut off.According to the Emergency Lawyers human rights group, which has documented abuses since the start of the war two years ago, the attack on the two villages in North Kordofan 'killed 18 civilians and wounded dozens.'The wounded were transferred to the state capital of El-Obeid for treatment.Tolls are nearly impossible to independently verify in Sudan, with many medical facilities forced out of service and limited media access.Since the RSF lost control of the capital Khartoum to the army in March, it has focused its attacks in the west of the country, where it controls much of the vast Darfur region. Both sides have faced accusations of war crimes during the conflict, which has killed tens of thousands and created what the United Nations describes as the world's largest displacement and hunger crises.

Prominent religio-political leader's children killed, wife injured in northwestern Pakistan home shooting

PESHAWAR: A shooting at the residence of a prominent religio-political party leader, Mufti Kifayatullah, in Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province left his son and daughter dead and his wife critically wounded on Saturday, while he himself sustained serious injuries, according to an official statement. A former provincial lawmaker from Malakand division and district chief of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) party, Kifayatullah was attacked inside his residence in Batkhela, Levies officials said in a statement. 'A shooting incident took place at the house of Mufti Kifayatullah, district chief of JUI-F in Batkhela,' the statement said. 'As a result of the firing, Kifayatullah was seriously injured, his daughter and son were killed, and his wife was also critically wounded.' Authorities said the assailant was the JUI-F politician's own son, who managed to escape after the attack. The bodies and the injured were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Batkhela, where doctors later said Kifayatullah's condition was out of danger. The motive behind the shooting was not immediately clear, though the incident appeared to be linked to some domestic dispute. The JUI-F, a major religio-political party with deep roots in northwestern Pakistan, has long exercised influence in the area. However, it struggled in the 2024 general elections, with leaders blaming security threats for their inability to run a full campaign.

Hiker Found Dead after Bear Attack in Japan Forest

A hiker attacked by a wild brown bear was found dead in northern Japan on Friday, officials said, a day after the bloody encounter that reportedly saw him dragged into a forest. The hiker in his 20s tried to fight off the large animal but was pulled into the nearby woods with his legs bleeding profusely, local media outlets including the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper said. The man was attacked while walking a trail on Mount Rausu on the northern island of Hokkaido on Thursday morning, a local police spokesman told AFP. On Friday afternoon, he was found and taken to a hospital where he was officially pronounced dead, according to a Hokkaido government official. Hunters also caught and killed a bear near the trail, an official working for Shari town -- where the mountain is -- told AFP. DNA analysis will be conducted to determine whether the bear was responsible for the victim's death. A wallet containing a card that bore the man's name was found near the scene of the encounter in the northeastern part of Hokkaido, according to media. A torn, bloodied shirt believed to be his was also found Friday, with nearby trees and soil dotted with traces of blood, Kyodo news agency said, quoting police. Among other discovered items were a watch, a hat and what appeared to be tear gas, Kyodo said. The number of brown bears in Hokkaido fell year-on-year in 2023 for the first time since 1991, according to estimates released this month. There were about 11,600 at the end of 2023, down 500 from a year earlier. The Hokkaido government cited unprecedented hunting of brown bears, with a record 1,804 caught in the 12 months to March 2024.
