Women's Rugby World Cup blow: Springbok star to take time off due to health
The Citizen reports that SA Rugby announced earlier today that the Springbok flanker and Bulls Daisies captain will take time away from the game. While her medical condition has not been disclosed, she has asked for privacy.
The 28-year-old, who has earned 33 Test caps and captained the Springbok women on three occasions, led the Bulls Daisies to their third consecutive Women's Premier Division title in 2025.
Dumke was 'pivotal' for Bok women
Springbok women performance coach Swys de Bruin acknowledged Dumke's importance to the national setup and expressed full support for her decision.
'Lusanda has been pivotal for us, but we now wish her the best as she battles her medical condition,' he said.
'Her absence will have an impact, but at the same time, the players going to the [Women's] Rugby World Cup will know that playing for your country while you are fit and strong is indeed a privilege.'
Dumke is a previous winner of the SA Rugby Women's Player of the Year award, and her leadership and resilience left a lasting mark on both the Bok women and the Bulls Daisies.
Thando Manana, the executive for women's rugby and strategic projects at the Blue Bulls Company, said: 'Lusanda has been more than just a captain, she's been the heartbeat of the Bulls Daisies. Her leadership, humility, and relentless drive have shaped the culture of this team.
'While we respect her decision to step away for health reasons, her legacy will continue to inspire every player who wears this jersey. We stand firmly behind her and wish her strength and healing in the journey ahead.'
The Springbok women kick off their world cup campaign against Brazil on August 24, followed by tough fixtures against Italy (August 31) and France (September 7).

'[Forwards] coach Daan [Human] is happy with the way he [has] us scrumming, but apart from that they will [be] crucial in general play. I said it a couple of weeks ago that Siya is a six and not an eight, but we came to the conclusion that it won't happen so much in the game where we need him there.' Erasmus also backed Manie Libbok ahead of Handrè Pollard and Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and explained why he didn't pick a specialist flyhalf on the bench. 'Sasha and Handrè will probably play in Cape Town [next weekend] to spread the load. Not having a flyhalf on the bench, you know that Damian [Willemse] can play that position for us. 'The only time we really we swap flyhalves is if he is having an off day or missing kicks, but Manie has been slotting them really well. I think the new rhino ball must be making the difference because he is doing well. 'We felt we had to have cover at position 13 and with Damian de Allende having a niggle and only expected to be ready next week, we went with Canan [Moodie] on the bench. 'It was between Sasha and Handrè or Canan and because we don't have an out-and-out cover at 13, we do have a Damian [Willemse] as cover for [number] 10.' Erasmus also explained why he announced the squad on Monday. 'It is because we have been preparing for three weeks for Australia and that doesn't normally happen. What usually happens is after the incoming series, the next Test match is a little bit closer. 'Why we are announcing the squad on Monday is to get the speculation out of the way, and also for players to know who is playing so that we can focus on training well,' he said, adding there may be changes. 'If you look at the balance of their squad, they brought a lot of forwards on tour and we might change on Friday and bring RG [Snyman] back in the mix if they go with a six/two split on the bench. If they stay with five/three, which is pretty much their team, that will be it.'

We changed our minds about Siya at No 8
Springbok captain Siya Kolisi will feature at eighthman for the first time in his career for the Boks, having played in the position at franchise level. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus admitted that the Bok team management changed their minds about captain Siya Kolisi featuring at No 8 for the national team, after he was selected there for the first Test of the Rugby Championship against the Wallabies at Ellis Park on Saturday. The Boks do not have an out and out eighthman in the current squad, due to Jasper Wiese serving a ban for his red card picked up against Italy, and Evan Roos having been released back to his union. Kwagga Smith is probably the closest the Boks have to a genuine eighthman, but he is preferred for his impact from off the bench. The inexperienced (at international level) Jean-Luc du Preez, and utility forwards Marco van Staden and Cobus Wiese were the other options, along with Kolisi, for the No 8 jersey. Kolisi backed In the end, it seems like Kolisi's stint at eighthman for the Sharks during the United Rugby Championship earlier this season, and a shift in mindset from the Bok coaching group, led to the decision to give him a go. 'Siya at eight, we changed our mind there. The more we practiced and prepared, we realised that the only time he really plays at eight is when we are scrumming, which happens about 13 or 14 times a game,' explained Erasmus on Monday. 'But general play happens more, so we felt that having Pieter-Steph (du Toit), Marco and Siya on the field at the same time is beneficial for us. Australia are a big threat at the breakdown and they fight hard there. All three of them are really good at cleaning out and stealing at the breakdown and we feel we are going to need that. 'So Siya will probably be packing down for about six scrums (on our ball), and maybe on (scrum) defence he might be at flank and Marco at eight. 'Daan (Human, the scrum coach) is really happy with the way they are scrumming, so it is really just at scrum time when Siya will be at eight. In general play, on defence and attack, he will be playing his regular game. 'I know a couple of weeks ago I said that Siya is a six and not an eight, but we came to the conclusion that we won't need him to play like an out and out eight during the game, and then we have Kwagga on the bench who can cover there as well.' Surprise announcement The Boks sprung a surprise by naming their team for the game on Monday, which they usually do on Tuesday, and Erasmus admitted that they could still make a late change to their game day squad, depending on the Aussie match 23 which will be named on Thursday. 'Because we have been preparing for Australia for the last three weeks we decided to release the team a bit early. Usually after the incoming series we go into the Rugby Championship sooner, but there was a longer break this year,' said Erasmus. 'So everyone (in the squad) knew who was playing and we just wanted to get all the speculation out of the way so that the focus can fully be on the (playing) team and the match. 'We might make a slight change later in the week if they decide to go six-two (split on the bench). If you look at their squad they have brought a lot of forwards on tour. So if they do that, RG (Snyman) might come into the mix. But if they go with a standard five-three this is our team.'

Morne van den Berg could consider himself unlucky to miss out, given the Lions player's standout performances in back-to-back Tests against Italy in the recent Incoming Series. The Boks also boast the talents and vast experience of Faf de Klerk and Williams' Sharks teammate, Jaden Hendrikse. Williams impressed in the second Test against Italy, combining well with flyhalf Manie Libbok, having recovered from a neck injury. They will again renew their burgeoning half-back partnership in a very attacking backline on Saturday. Damian Willemse will provide flyhalf cover. Asked whether he felt he was now in a position to make the Springbok No 9 jersey his own, Williams was diplomatic. 'We have a really good squad – Cobus, Morne, Faf, and Jaden as well. I think selection is just about how we want to play in the week. I can't really say that I want to make the No 9 jersey mine, but I would like to compete,' said Williams. Coach Rassie Erasmus reiterated that the jersey was a 'shared one'. 'I think we're really trying to build a culture where it's all three's jersey and hopefully just in the World Cup quarter-final, semi-final, and final we'll pick the best nine in form,' Williams said. 'Faf is not at all out of the picture and Jaden is not out of the picture. We know we normally carry four nines but, just for the sake of repetition and getting some one-on-one intel into players, we cut the squad a little bit. 'We know if you don't go four positions deep, maybe suddenly in one game you get two injuries in one position. So, they're competing and they don't want to just give the jersey away, but they also understand that we will rotate. He (Williams) got the nod in a very important match. The way we want to play in this game, we feel he is the best option there. But I think this squad has accepted now that we have to share jerseys and not say this guy is out-and-out the best.' Erasmus has named a strong team to face Australia, with the matchday squad featuring 18 Rugby World Cup winners. The Springboks will be hunting their fifth successive victory against the Wallabies.
