Gretchen Walsh earns breakthrough swimming world title with second-fastest time in history
Walsh clocked 54.73 seconds at the World Swimming Championships, just off her own record of 54.60 from May 3. She owns the top eight times in history.
She prevailed Monday over Belgian Roos Vanotterdijk (a distant 1.11 seconds behind) and Australian Alexandria Perkins for the U.S.' first gold medal on the second day of the eight-day meet in Singapore.
Walsh added her first individual long course title to an already stacked resume: four Olympic medals in Paris (including two relay golds), 11 world records and seven gold medals at the world short course championships last December and nine individual NCAA titles in four years at Virginia.

Walsh made the U.S. team for worlds in four individual events and is a medal contender in all of them. She still has the 50m fly and 50m and 100m frees left, plus possible relay duty.
Walsh was one of the majority of U.S. swim team members affected to varying degrees by acute gastroenteritis, or a stomach bug, leading into worlds.
On the first day of worlds Sunday, she said she was feeling tired but trying to make the best of annoying situation.
After those comments, she later Sunday swam a 100m fly semifinal, then scratched out of the 4x100m freestyle final that took place about an hour later.
Also Monday, China's Qin Haiyang overtook Olympic gold medalist Nicolo Martinenghi of Italy by 35 hundredths to take the men's 100m breaststroke.
Qin, who swept the 50m, 100m and 200m breaststrokes at the 2023 Worlds, returned to the podium after placing seventh and tied for 10th individually in Paris.
Worlds continue all week with preliminary heats at 10 p.m. ET and finals at 7 a.m., live on Peacock.
Tuesday's finals are expected to feature Katie Ledecky in the 1500m freestyle, a race she has never lost in a major final, and another 100m backstroke duel between Australian Kaylee McKeown and American Regan Smith.

American swimming star Katie Ledecky won yet another 1,500-meter freestyle world title in Singapore, her sixth victory in the event. The dominant performance on Tuesday marked Ledecky's 22nd gold medal at the World Aquatics Championships and took her overall tally to 28 medals. After a fast start, the nine-time Olympic champion was projected to finish ahead of her own world record set in 2018 before closing in 15:26.44 – six seconds outside her best-ever time. Pushed hard by Pallister in the first half of the race, Ledecky was at one point as much as three seconds ahead of world record pace, and 2.35 seconds ahead by the halfway mark. Despite a slower second half, she still remains unbeaten in the 1,500m freestyle at the World Championships, ever since she made her debut in 2013. Ledecky withdrew from the event in 2019 due to illness and missed last year's worlds to focus on the Olympics. 'I love this race,' added Ledecky. 'This race was the race I broke my first world record in 2013 so lots of great races and memories over the years at worlds and happy I can do it in Singapore.' The most decorated female swimmer in history, Ledecky now has 42 medals across the Olympics and World Championships, including 31 golds.

Sean Payton: Dre Greenlaw plays like Mike Tyson
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw made the most of the first day in pads at Broncos training camp. Greenlaw filled gaps and delivered hits throughout team drills in Denver and head coach Sean Payton said you didn't even have to be watching to know that Greenlaw was the one landing blows. Payton said "you can hear it" when Greenlaw makes a hit and then went on to compare his style to another knockout artist from a different sport. "He plays like Mike Tyson," Payton said, via the team's website. "He's tough, he's physical. He's built that way. There's not a lot of leaky yardage. Some guys [allow that]. He's a knock-back tackler. They stop where he hits them. There's an intensity to how he plays. He's one of those players that if you put the film on and didn't say anything, at some point early, you'd ask, 'Who is this guy?'" Greenlaw was limited to two games for the 49ers last year because of injuries and a quad injury interrupted his first offseason in Denver, so one key for the Broncos will be making sure Greenlaw's healthy enough to deploy that physicality on a regular basis. If he is, facing an already tough Broncos defense will be even less enjoyable for opposing offenses in 2025.

Commanders put OL Nate Herbig on reserve/retired list
Veteran offensive lineman Nate Herbig is walking away from football. Herbig signed with the Commanders this offseason, but the team announced on Tuesday morning that he has been placed on the team's reserve/retired list. He will no longer count against the team's 90-man roster limit. Herbig spent the last two seasons with the Steelers, but did not play at all in 2024 after a rotator cuff injury. Herbig appeared in 17 games for the Steelers in 2023 and he started 11 games at guard for the Jets in 2022. The Eagles signed Herbig as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and he started 17 of the 33 games he played while with Philadelphia. Nick Allegretti and Chris Paul remain on hand as depth options at guard in Washington.
