Pioneering period instrument performances: Five key Roger Norrington recordings

The Guardian2 days ago
It's hard to think of another conductor of recent times who has polarised opinion more sharply than Roger Norrington. On one side were those who admired his indefatigable research into 18th- and 19th-century performance practice, and the ways in which he deployed the results in his work with the period instruments of the London Classical Players, often extending the idea of historically informed performance beyond its then restricted field of the classical era into the orchestral music of Schumann, Berlioz, Brahms and Wagner. On the other side were those who viewed Norrington's 'experiments' as at best eccentric and at worst as profoundly destructive, especially when he carried over those ideas, such as his hatred of string vibrato, into his work with the many traditional symphony orchestras that he conducted throughout his career.
Both those aspects of his conducting life are well represented in the many recordings – well over 100 - that Norrington made. Another significant aspect of his work, as an opera conductor (especially in the 1970s and early 1980s with Britain's first regional opera company, Kent Opera, of which he was the founding music director) is less well represented however and in this selection of Norrington's recordings, the Don Giovanni, a later product, has to stand for that important contribution.
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony – London Classical Players (1987)
Norrington's cycle of Beethoven's symphonies, overtures and concertos, all recorded on the period instruments of the London Classical Players is perhaps the best known of all his recording ventures.
Wagner Overtures - London Classical Players (1990)
Even today period-instrument performances of Wagner, Bruckner and Mahler are not exactly commonplace, but when Norrington made his pioneering recordings in the 1990s they really were unexplored territory.
Mozart's Don Giovanni – London Classical Players (1993)
Norrington's two Mozart sets with the London Classical Players – this Don Giovanni and a Zauberflöte released the following year, were very much trail-blazers when they were recorded over three decades ago.
Vaughan Williams's London Symphony – London Philharmonic Orchestra (2000)
British music was another of Norrington's enthusiasms, and his cycle of the Vaughan Williams symphonies, as well as recordings of Elgar, were much admired.
Mahler's Symphony No 5 – SWR Radio Symphony Stuttgart (2006)
From 1998 to 2011 Norrington was principal conductor of the Stuttgart Radio orchestra, and made a whole range of recordings of mainstream repertoire with it, including a complete Mahler cycle.
Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique – Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (2013)
The London Classical Players were dissolved in 1997 and its dates taken over by the OAE, with which Norrington continued to appear occasionally until he retired in 2021.

Lisa stunned in the stylish leopard printed swimwear which boasted a triangular top and tiny bottoms and she wore it with a matching cover up. The stunner later pulled on shorts and a tight black vest as she headed out into the sunshine for a long day of work on the unknown protect. Taking to her Instagram the beauty shared a slew of snaps as she made the most of gorgeous location and joked around with the crew. Last month Lisa revealed the 'game-changing' secret behind her incredible figure just a couple of years after she claims she 'lost herself' during menopause. The presenter has been candid about the 'sudden' weight gain she experienced after becoming perimenopausal in her mid-40s. In fact Lisa's early menopause saw her pile on 'around three stone in a year' while also causing 'brain fog, anxiety and fits of rage'. But the brunette model - who has since become a menopause campaigner - has been feeling more confident in recent years and now regularly shows off her impressive physique. In an interview with Closer Magazine, she revealed the secret behind her stunning weight loss. 'I do a lot of weight training,' she said, 'I'm all about getting stronger as I get older and it's been a game changer. I get up at 5am and do a session three or four mornings a week in the gym. 'Movement really is medicine and now that I'm in my 50s I need to get more muscle mass and increase bone density. A lot of us women think we need to pound the pavements or do HIIT classes, but that doesn't work for everyone because it spikes your level of cortisol. I also do pilates.' It comes after Lisa admitted she has 'reservations' about marrying her partner George Smart eight years after they got engaged. The model and communications firm founder, 44, first dated more than 20 years ago when she was a DJ at MTV and he was the channel's head of events. She captioned the post with a string of emojis The lovebirds rekindled their romance a decade ago and got engaged in 2017. When asked when they're going to tie the knot, Lisa admitted she has a 'tiny hint of reservation' that marriage will 'change' their relationship. 'Deep down I do know it wouldn't, but then I think, "Well my mum and dad's marriage didn't last," and some people say, "Don't do it because it changes things,"' she told The Mirror. 'So there's 90 per cent of me that knows nothing would change, but a tiny hint of reservation where I think it would.' George, however, said he has no hesitation and would marry Lisa tomorrow if they could get their friends - who are 'dotted around the world' - all together. He told the outlet he 'knows nothing would change' and is ready to 'have that bravery' to take 'the next step'. When asked what she's excited for about getting married, Lisa said: 'Being able to call him "my husband" and saying, "My husband's coming soon, I'm just waiting for my husband!" I think I prefer "my husband" to "my fiancé" – I'd love it!' The couple, who recently enjoyed a trip to the Caribbean to celebrate Lisa's 53rd birthday, are planning more travel in the future to Chile, Peru, Thailand and Guatemala. As for TV work, they said they'd love their own travel show, with George joking it should be called 'Couples Travel'.

These TV guide shake-ups can take place for a number of reasons. Sometimes Sky will be forced to close channels – either due to a lack of interest, or because the channel operator has decided to pull it. But Sky doesn't run all channels broadcast on TV, so some closures are out of their control. Sky will also rebrand channels due to demand, to test a content type, or to tie in with an event or holiday (like Easter weekend). The TV titan made dozens of these changes in April, including the permanent closure of several channels.
