The Reef House: The unassuming Aussie hideaway named BEST luxury hotel in the country for 2025

Daily Mail22-04-2025
A stunning Queensland escape has added yet another award to its collection after taking out gold at the Australian Tourism Awards.
The Reef House, an adults-only retreat in North Queensland, has been a go-to for those in the know for 47 years - yet many still walk right past, unaware of its existence.
Beloved for its outstanding customer service and down to earth yet high-end hospitality, it came as no surprise when it was named Australia's best five star luxury accommodation.
The latest accolade comes after a very successful 2024 for the hotel, which won number one luxury hotel on TripAdvisor, number one hotel in the South Pacific and Australia and North Queensland Restaurant of the Year.
The Reef House Director, Malcolm Bean, congratulated the hotel's team, led by General Manager Wayne Harris, for their commitment to customer service.
'It is an honour to have The Reef House Adults Retreat recognised by the tourism industry as the best five-star luxury accommodation in Australia for the second year in a row after entering the Hall of Fame at the Queensland Tourism Awards in November for three consecutive wins,' he said.
'Our vision for an adults-only wellness resort that delivers remarkable customer service with more than 28 complimentary Signature Inclusions is resounding with travellers who return again and again.
'Returns continue to grow with 36 per cent of our guests repeat visitors.'
Among the inclusions he mentioned are a pool butler serving cold towels and tropical sorbets and the General Manager hosting punch and canapes each evening at the Brigadier's Honesty Bar.
There are also interactive cocktail classes twice per week, a bottle of sparkling in every room, a sommelier wine appreciation experience, escape planning specialists, a dedicated wine room, a curated room arrival with music and oil burners and countless activities like yoga, aqua aerobics and breathing classes.
Rich in history, the hotel was built in 1958 and one of the first Palm Cove properties.
It was operated by Brigadier David Thomson as a private residence where visitors were treated as personal guests; guests include countless Aussie celebrities and politicians.
The hotel's accommodation options cover a broad range of rooms, suites and apartments suiting couples, singles or small groups of every size and interest.
Of the 67 rooms and suites (starting at $623 a night depending on the time of year), guest favourites include the Verandah King Spa Suite, Ocean View King Room and Melaleuca King Spa Room.
There are also two swimming pools, the tranquility pool and heated mineral pool, the award-winning Reef House Restaurant and Day Spa, a personal concierge service and unlimited use of vintage cruiser bikes and fishing rods.
'Over the past 15 years we have continued to develop The Reef House Adults Retreat business model and create a new category of a "Full Service Adults Retreat" that is unique in Australia,' Mr Bean continued.
'Investment in traditional customer service is the primary focus, with multiple in-house experiences included to offer guests value, and an adults-only policy to ensure rest, relaxation and rejuvenation.'
And the reviews speak for themselves, with hundreds of delighted guests rating their experience an 'easy five stars'.
'The service was impeccable at the resort. The staff were super friendly and the facilities were phenomenal,' a recent guest gushed.
'This place is amazing,' another echoed.
'We are locals and have always wanted to stay. When a special came up we jumped at the chance and we were not disappointed. The service is like no where else I have ever visited and is the stand out.
'We felt like VIPs and are so sad that we didn't stay longer. The food was amazing, drinks were amazing, bed was amazing, pools amazing. Can't stop thinking about our stay and cannot wait to go back.'
One more added: 'This was our second time at the reef house after two years and that was far too long without the rest, rejuvenation, and relaxation that The Reef House has to offer.
'Our stay would not be the same without the amazing staff that go above and beyond for us every time. We can't wait to come back to our little slice of paradise that is The Reef House.
'Words can not describe the love we have for the team, they make us feel like family.'

Sainsbury's car park rated UK seaside town's top tourist attraction on Tripadvisor

UK seaside towns are usually a hit with tourists for their beautiful beaches, cosy pubs and fish and chip shops, but one town has become famous for a Sainsbury's car park When planning a seaside staycation, most people will look at a town's proximity to beautiful beaches, the choice of pubs and chippies on offer, and whether there are many attractions to keep the whole family busy. ‌ While Bude in Cornwall may be right by some gorgeous coastal walks and offer plenty of seaside charm, there's a quirky reason why Brits are flocking to the town to snap photos. ‌ In what is an example of British humour at its best, a Sainsbury's car park has become the town's top-rated attraction on Tripadvisor, with a rating of 4.7 stars. ‌ It's not entirely clear when it started, but UK tourists started leaving hilariously generous reviews of the Bude Tunnel, describing it as "magnificent" and "magical", and comparing it to the likes of Lapland or London. It's gained such a cult following that Tripadvisor reportedly briefly switched off comments at one point because the reviews weren't truthfully reflecting what it actually is; a perspex tunnel, in a car park. "A life-changing stroll through plastic grandeur – loses half a star because our epic trek lacked a soundtrack," one jokester wrote on the review site. "Maybe it would've been better at night when it's lit up." Another added: "Forget Harry Potter. If you want a magical experience, this is it. This is our second visit to the tunnel in as many years. You will NOT be disappointed." It could also turn out to be quite the romantic hotspot. One holidaymaker and their partner survived what must have been a rough time for them both as they wrote: "Doesn't disappoint, it brought me and my partner closer together after a disagreement over Sainsbury's opening times. Stronger than ever, thank you Bude tunnel." ‌ Locals have also been getting in on the joke, with one resident saying that "this South Western Wonder is a wonderful landmark which we are all sure to be proud to have in Cornwall", quipping that they felt "so inspired and motivated" while they walked through the tunnel. Meanwhile Sainsbury's has embraced the attention, and has even decorated the tunnel with some Christmas lights during festive seasons. Luckily for tourists (and to be honest, locals), there's a lot more that Bude has to offer. Other highly-rated attractions on Tripadvisor include the town's natural sea pool, as well as some of the picturesque beaches such as Summerleaze Beach with its pirate ship model and Sandy Mouth Beach. Water sports fans won't be disappointed either with a host of offerings from kayaking and bodyboarding to surfing. Meanwhile back on land, hikers can lace up their boots and take on a stretch of the South West Coast Path.

I've travelled every continent - this is the most underrated city I've ever seen

A travel lover who has visited all seven continents has revealed the 'underrated city' she'd love to go back to A travel blogger who has visited all seven continents has revealed the 'most underrated city' she'd go back to in 'a heartbeat'. Travel lover and photographer @Amanda_wanders regularly shares travel inspiration and tips with her 40,000 TikTok followers. ‌ She's visited countless beloved destinations and lesser-known spots. In one video, Amanda heaped praise on a European city that she thinks deserves more praise — and the flight time from the UK is under three hours. Sharing the recommendation, Amanda told followers: "I've been to all seven continents and this is my most underrated city. Tallin, Estonia." ‌ In her video, she shared several videos from her visit to the historic capital city, known for its medieval architecture and 'fairy tale' streets, and it's easy to see why she loved her visit. Amanda's caption added: "Legit without question this is the most underrated city I've ever been to and I would go back again a heartbeat!" ‌ Found on the Baltic Sea, Tallinn is Estonia's largest city. Visit Tallinn says: "Tallinn is a cosy capital with clean air and a relaxed vibe. Historical and cultural legacies from different eras contrast with its vibrant and creative urban environment. "Tallinn enchants with its medieval Old Town, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, varied districts and rich urban nature. A lively, year-round cultural scene and culinary delights inspired by local traditions and Nordic cuisine add further layers of interest." Expanding on the history of the Old Town, the tourism website adds: "A UNESCO World Heritage site, Tallinn's Old Town is a fairy tale come to life. Here you will find the oldest continually operating apothecary in Europe, the St Olaf's church, what was once the world's tallest building, Northern Europe's mightiest defensive wall and system of towers dating to the Middle Ages, and one of the best-preserved Gothic town halls. The first public Christmas tree in Europe was also erected in Tallinn. "The Old Town is Tallinn's beating and burgeoning heart to this day. Cosy cafés tucked in inner courtyards, world-class restaurants, intriguing contemporary art galleries, exciting museums, and a year-round event calendar all make Tallinn's Old Town a source of admiration and discovery. For a place so historic, it always has something new to offer." While it's not the only attraction, the Old Town is the most popular with Tripadvisor reviews, which have ranked it as the number one thing to do in Tallinn, out of hundreds of entries. ‌ One impressed visitor said: "A beautiful old town. A really excellent old town, even with its city walls just wonderful. Add to that the many small streets and very well restored/preserved houses just wonderful to walk in warm temperatures there. "Also recommended is the ascent to the upper town, because from there the view of Tallinn is again so beautiful." Another comment reads: "You will spend hours here and you will constantly find something to be in awe of. Plenty of historical sites, restaurants and things to see and do. Such a beautiful city." Someone else thought: "Tallinn is a really delightful city! It is definitely worth a visit, especially if you are fond of medieval architecture and like to lose yourself in romantic alleys that pop out onto beautiful parks and breathtaking views of the city towers. "Tallinn isn't huge, so if you're going fast and fast, you'll just need a weekend to explore the bulk of the old town, although a calmer and more reflective visit is obviously preferable. Do not miss the opportunity to taste the typical Estonian cuisine in the many restaurants of the old town!"

Brit mum's holiday nightmare as she's 'bitten by 100 mosquitoes' at 5 star hotel

Single mum Keeley Smith, 49, splashed out £4,500 on a swanky hotel in Cape Verde with her daughter Lola, 14, and friend Kate - but arrived to find accommodation "worse than Fawlty Towers" A single mum claims she was bitten '100 times' on her five-star TUI holiday as her room was infested with mosquitos. Keeley Smith, 49, spent 11 days at the 'appalling' Cape Verde hotel with her 14-year-old daughter Lola and friend Kate earlier this month. Although the five-star package holiday cost a whopping £4,500 via TUI for the three of them, Keeley said the hotel was worse than Fawlty Towers - branding it "vile" and "dirty". She claims there were so many mosquitos in the room that TUI staff promised to fumigate - however she never saw it happen and bugs remained in the room. She was left needing antibiotics and hydrocortisone cream as many of her "100 bites" got infected. TUI confirmed they are in contact with the customer to "resolve the matter directly". Keeley, from Leeds, West Yorks, said: "After the first day I was so badly bitten, I looked like I had leprosy. "But when I walked around the complex - I realised all the other guests were covered in bites like me. "There was a Spanish woman shouting at the reception, 'I cannot sleep in my room, there are cockroaches crawling over me, there are mosquitos everywhere, I'm complaining every day, why won't you do something?' "There was a thick cloud of mosquitos swarming at our door every time we went in and out. As for the room itself - it was filthy. It was a dirty room. Even when we first checked in, there were suncream footprints still on the floor. "It was vile. You were in the shower and there were mosquitos in the shower with you, it was just awful. The toilet was filthy, the towels were unwashed. On the front bath panel there was a squashed dead mosquito - a big one. "After I complained, the TUI rep told me they would do a deep clean and a fumigation. But that mosquito was still there when we left. "But most of the staff were rude, they could not be bothered. Even the food was appalling. My daughter eats for England - I've never seen her eat less. "At breakfast, they had run out of Nutella - the dispenser was empty, so I asked if they had any more. A member of staff came back with a bread knife, cut the plastic bottle in half and handed it to my daughter with a spoon. It was just like Fawlty Towers, honestly, it was awful." Since she got home, Keeley has been prescribed a double dose of antibiotics, antihistamines and hydrocortisone cream for serious skin infections. Keeley said: "We travel a lot. I fully expect to get a few bites in a foreign country. But the level of mosquitos in that room - you needed a hazmat suit. I work really hard. We love going on holiday. But I couldn't wait to get home." Other holidaymakers report experiencing similar in their TripAdvisor review of the hotel - warning about the mosquitos. One wrote: "Mosquitos... You will get bitten a lot, they water the garden at night and it brings them in. Bring anti mosquito spray, antihistamines and hydrocortisone cream." Another said on "Mosquitoes. There is so much mosquito. We sustained severe mosquito bites. The hotel may need to consider putting mosquito repellents and coils in the rooms." A third wrote: "The level of mosquitoes inside toilets and bars were ridiculous." TUI confirmed they are in contact with the customer to "resolve the matter directly".
