Basic military training to be given to students from Class 1 in Maharashtra: Minister
Maharashtra school education minister Dada Bhuse on Monday announced that basic military training will be imparted to students from Class 1 in the state in a move to instill sense of patriotism, discipline and promote habit of regular physical exercise among the children.
Retired soldiers will be training the pupils, news agency PTI quoted Bhuse as saying.
"A decision has been taken to give basic level military training to students from Class 1. This will help inculcate love for the country, encourage habits like doing physical exercise regularly and discipline that will benefit the students," he added.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has responded positively to the proposal. To implement the proposal, help of 2.5 lakh ex-servicemen will be taken along with sports teachers, National Cadet Corps (NCC), Scouts and Guides, the Shiv Sena minister added.
The proposal comes in the backdrop of heightened India-Pakistan tensions that peaked after the April 22 Pahalgam attack and Indian armed forces' retaliatory strikes on May 7 - 'Operation Sindoor' - against terror infrastruction in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Nationwide mock drills were held on May 7 under 'Operation Abhyas'. A second round of mock drills under Operation Shield was held on Saturday, May 31, in the states along the Pakistan border.
The drills were conducted to ensure civil defence readiness against potential hostile attacks. Another round of mock drills took place on May 31, under Operation Shield', aimed to address gaps identified during the ones held earlier.
The exercises included simulating multiple emergency situations, stressing on the heightened emphasis on national security amid ongoing tensions between the two countries.

India objects to ADB's aid to Pakistan, flags risk of fund misuse
New Delhi: India has strongly objected to the Asian Development Bank's (ADB) decision to extend financial support to Pakistan, warning that the funds could be misused amid rising defence spending, a shrinking tax-to-GDP ratio, and stalled economic reforms, an official aware of the matter said on Wednesday. New Delhi has also highlighted that Islamabad's increasing military spending, often at the cost of development priorities, cannot be justified solely by domestic resource limitations, the official said. The Asian Development Bank has approved an $800 million package for Pakistan to boost fiscal sustainability and strengthen public financial management, Press Trust of India reported on Tuesday. The package includes a $300 million policy-based loan and a $500 million program-based guarantee to help mobilize additional financing. Last month, India reiterated its concerns over the International Monetary Fund (IMF) releasing over ₹ 8,000 crore to Pakistan, cautioning that the neighbouring country's 'arms purchase spikes with every loan' it gets from the global lender. Pakistan's tax-to-GDP ratio fell from 13% in FY2018 to 9.2% in FY2023 despite rising defence spending, prompting India to urge the ADB to firmly protect its financing from diversion to military use, according to this official. 'India expects the ADB management to adequately ring-fence the ADB financing, to prevent any such misuse,' the official said. 'The linkage between Pakistan's increase in expenditure on its military, as opposed to on development, cannot be fully explained solely in terms of its domestic resource mobilization.' In early May, India and Pakistan were locked in a four-day military conflict—one of the most serious in recent years—after a terror attack in Kashmir killed 26 tourists. India blamed Pakistan-based militants and responded with cross-border strikes, prompting intense clashes before a ceasefire on May 10. Just days later, Pakistan secured a fresh loan from the International Monetary Fund to stabilize its economy, despite strong protests from India, which argued that rising military spending and stalled reforms made it an unfit recipient of global financial support. The official mentioned above said that while Pakistan has made some reforms acknowledged by ADB's management, the repeated need for IMF bailouts—the latest being the 24th—raises serious doubts about the effectiveness of past programs funded by both ADB and IMF. 'Pakistan's poor track record of implementation stems from the military's deeply entrenched interference in economic affairs, posing risks of policy slippages and reversal of reforms as has been witnessed in the past,' the official said. 'The progress on implementation of the most critical FATF action items relating to terrorist financing investigations and prosecution of leaders of UN-designated terrorist groups and freezing and confiscation of criminal assets is highly unsatisfactory.' The Financial Action Task Force (FATF) is an international body that sets standards and monitors compliance with anti-money laundering (AML) and counter-terrorism financing (CFT) measures to protect global financial systems and security. The official also warned that Pakistan's fragile economy poses a serious credit risk to ADB, with the country's heavy reliance on external debt raising serious concerns about the long-term sustainability of future exposures. Given Pakistan's high debt-to-GDP ratio and poor credit rating, India has urged ADB to remain vigilant in protecting the bank's financial health and long-term prospects, the official added.

Rahul's surrender barb insult of armed forces: BJP
The BJP on Wednesday (June 4, 2025) accused Rahul Gandhi of insulting the armed forces with his "surrender" barb at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that it amounted to undermining the success of Operation Sindoor. BJP national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the Congress leader has surpassed even the Pakistani Army chief, its Prime Minister and terrorist masterminds based there in speaking in support of the neighbouring country, and alleged that his jibes reflect a sick and dangerous mindset. Statiq partners with HPCL to expand public EV charging access across India
New Delhi: Electric vehicle charging platform Statiq has integrated more than 5,100 electric vehicle (EV) chargers from Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) onto its mobile application through its EVLinq platform, the company said. The partnership includes onboarding HPCL's existing and upcoming EV charging infrastructure, of which 2,900 are DC fast chargers. The chargers will be accessible via the Statiq app, which will allow real-time visibility, discovery, and navigation for EV users across India. HPCL operates over 23,000 fuel retail outlets in India and is expanding its EV charging footprint under the Government of India's PM eDrive scheme of the Ministry of Heavy Industries. 'Statiq's EVLinq platform will power the seamless aggregation and real-time visibility of HPCL chargers, enabling EV users to discover, navigate, and charge at HPCL stations effortlessly,' the company said in a statement. The EVLinq platform provides interoperability with multiple EV charging protocols and backend monitoring for charge point operators (CPOs) and e-mobility service providers (eMSPs). 'We are thrilled to welcome HPCL's extensive charging network onto the Statiq platform. This partnership not only adds scale to our network but also reinforces our mission to make EV charging seamless and convenient for every Indian EV owner,' said Raghav Arora, co-founder and CTO, Statiq.
