MONSOON TREKKING 101

MONSOON TREKKING 101

Time of India2 days ago
As monsoon treks become the go-to weekend escape for nature lovers, seasoned trekkers weigh in on what every adventurer should keep in mind before setting off
MONSOON TRAILS SEE RISE IN NOVICE TREKKERS
Experts warn that social media often presents an overly romanticised view of monsoon treks, masking the real challenges involved.
Nish Agatha, founder of Into the Wild – Open Hikers Club, a community-led trekking initiative, says, 'We've had people turn up in jeans, trainers, and without any rain protection.
Some are completely unaware of how rapidly conditions can shift with a single downpour. It may seem harmless, but one ill-prepared trekker can put the entire group at risk.'
PREP SMART FOR WET TRAILS
According to experts, preparing for a monsoon trek involves careful attention to footwear, moisture management, and route awareness.
'Your gear must be waterproof or at least water-resistant—bags, jackets, and even base layers,' says Bengaluru-based Sidhant Simha, founder of a trekking organisation, adding, 'Training for slippery terrain is essential, as balance and core stability matter more than endurance.'
He adds that route selection is critical — avoid areas prone to landslides, flash floods, or thick fog. 'Knowing which trails are risky is vital, so trekking with a guide or experienced person is advisable.

Always check weather forecasts and forest alerts, monsoons are highly unpredictable,' he warns.
Essentials for a monsoon trek
High-ankle trekking shoes with good grip and water resistance, depending on the difficulty of the terrain
Poncho or rain jacket with a hood
Backpack rain cover and plastic/zip-lock bags for inner packing
Trekking poles for extra balance on slippery paths
Quick-dry clothes and an extra set of clothing in a dry bag
Headlamp with extra batteries, as fog and rain reduce visibility
Insect repellent, and a small first-aid kit with antiseptic
Waterproof phone pouch and basic navigation tools
(as suggested by Sidhant Simha, who runs Indivoyages, a trekking organisation)
NOT ALL TRAILS ARE MONSOON-READY
Trekking during the monsoon isn't one-size-fits-all—different regions respond to rain differently. 'Some trails shut down due to landslides or flooding, while others—like parts of the Western Ghats—thrive,' says Syed Zyan, a seasoned trekker.
'Safety depends on terrain, weather patterns, and whether you're on an organised trek or a DIY outing with friends.' He adds, 'We always ask: Can the trail handle heavy rain? Are there safe exit points? And do we have recent updates from locals or fellow trekkers? These details can make all the difference.
'
HOW LOCALS HELP KEEP TREKKERS SAFE
When exploring lesser-known or remote trails, coordinating with local authorities is crucial.
Nish Agatha, the founder of a trekking club. says, 'We often hire local guides, stay in homestays, and buy supplies from the villages we pass. It's our way of giving back—and a reminder that trekking isn't just about escape, but about forging real connections along the way.'
HANDLING EMERGENCIES ON THE TRAIL
'In monsoon conditions, every step must be intentional,' says Syed Zyan, a seasoned trekker. 'On mossy rocks or wet slopes, always test your footing before committing. Trekking isn't about speed; it's about surviving gracefully. Sprains and slips are common, so carrying a basic emergency kit is vital. We also check with locals beforehand for updates on river levels or possible blockages. If a route appears risky due to flash floods or landslides, we reroute or cancel it.
For longer treks, we carry essentials like ropes, ponchos, stretchers, and walkie-talkies—because conditions can change fast.'
We schedule our treks differently during the monsoon, starting early to avoid late returns and always allowing for a buffer in case of potential delays. When the clouds decide to open up, there's no outrunning them
Syed Zyan, a seasoned trekker
Forest guards and local communities are the first to spot dangers caused by rain, wildlife activity, or erosion. Their updates have helped us reroute or cancel treks at the last minute—something no map or app can provide
Nish Agatha, founder of a trekking club
People often drink less during the monsoon, risking dehydration. Carry at least two litres of water, use ORS or electrolytes, and keep quick-access snacks handy—sugary bites can be a real lifesaver on the trail

FASTag mandatory for all vehicles entering Tirumala from August 15

TIRUPATI: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams has made FASTag, a Radio frequency identification technology (RFID) based system for e-toll collection in the prepaid digital format, mandatory for all vehicles entering Tirumala via the Alipiri tollgate from Aug 15. The Tirupati trust maintained that the decision was taken to provide better safety standards, prevention of overcrowding and transparent services to the devotees arriving in various vehicles at the Alipiri check point, FASTag will be made mandatory for the vehicles entering Tirumala from August 15 onwards. Clarifying that vehicles without FASTag will no longer be allowed to enter Tirumala from Aug 15, TTD sources added that a FASTag issuance center has also been set up at the Alipiri check point for the convenience of those who do not have FASTag for their vehicles. TTD's vigilance and security wing clarified that the security frisking mechanisms in place at the Alipiri tollgate will remain as they are irrespective of the mode of toll-collection. While there are twin pedestrian routes leading to Tirumala, Alipiri happens to be the only gateway to Tirumala as far as vehicular traffic is concerned. It is at the Alipiri tollgate that the TTD collects two way toll-fees from vehicles plying along the twin ghat roads. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like NRIs Living In Ukraine Are Eligible For INR 2 Lakh Monthly Pension. Piloted flights of UAE's flying taxi to start in the coming days

Archer Aviation, the US-based eVTOL aircraft manufacturer, has announced that piloted flights of its flying taxi service in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will start in the coming days. 'We expect the first piloted flight to take place within days. We've got a lot of confidence that we'll be in there soon,' Archer founder and CEO Adam Goldstein said on Monday during the investor call after the second quarter results. Goldstein expressed confidence that Archer remains on track to launch the flying taxi service later this year in the UAE. Archer had signed definitive agreements with Abu Dhabi Aviation and the Abu Dhabi Investment Office for the launch of the world's first flying taxi service. As part of the deal, Archer delivered its first Midnight aircraft to the UAE and commenced its flight test program in Abu Dhabi earlier this year. 'Over the next several months, firstly, we're going to deliver an aircraft to the UAE later this summer. We'll start by doing some incremental testing out there, like validating performance in the higher temperature environment. Then we'll move on to improving routes on our intent networks in Abu Dhabi on the broader UAE, and then ultimately working towards sharing passengers again with Abu Dhabi Aviation,' Goldstein said. Archer's Midnight aircraft is fully electric and emission-free and it is designed to handle short-haul urban journeys, such as airport-to-downtown commutes. It is expected to slash travel times, reduce road congestion and offer a quieter and sustainable transportation alternative. In June, Archer conducted the first test flight of the air taxi, which took off from the helipad of Abu Dhabi Cruise Terminal and cruised above the Abu Dhabi Marina. Canadian influencer couple dies in off-roading crash in British Columbia

Source: X An influencer couple from Canada, known for their adventurous off-road travel videos, has died after a tragic accident in the British Columbia Interior. According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans, creators of the YouTube channel Toyota World Runners with over 200,000 subscribers, were killed on Thursday, August 7, 2025. Kaslo Search and Rescue (SAR) confirmed to CBC that they were called to the crash site at around 7:30 p.m. local time. Rescuers believe the pair lost control of their vehicle while navigating rough terrain in the mountains near Trout Lake, B.C. Just days before the accident, they had shared what would become their final YouTube video, titled "VANCOUVER ISLAND | The Off-Road Version," which showed them camping in remote Canadian wilderness and testing their Toyota trucks on challenging trails. Mark Jennings-Bates, a manager with Kaslo SAR, told CBC: "So it was on a forestry road, somewhere in the mountains, and quite a long ways north in the valley up towards ... the village of Trout Lake [in the West Kootenay region of southeastern B.C.]. Our teams were able to get to them efficiently. It's a long journey, but they got there efficiently. So that was very, very helpful. And of course that means that the helicopter pilot could also fly straight to the destination with confidence that he was going to find them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo " Jennings-Bates said one of the victims had no vital signs when crews arrived, while the other was airlifted to the hospital but later died. The cause of the crash is not confirmed, though he suspected 'a loss of control on rough terrain' as a possible factor. Tributes from family and fans Tourout's mother, Colleen, posted a heartfelt message on Facebook alongside a photograph of the couple in front of snow-covered mountains: "With unimaginable heartache, the families of Matthew Peter Yeomans and Stacey Tourout would like to advise that we lost them both tragically succumbing to injuries in an offroad accident on Aug 7, 2025 in the beautiful mountains of British Columbia that they loved so much. Please keep us and them in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate this devastating end to an amazing Love Story. They are together forever as we knew they would always be." Per an old post dated April 12, 2023, Stacey Tourout and Matthew Yeomans met each other 'because of an old Toyota.' They said their agenda was to drive the Cruiser Chinook truck they built in 100 days 'around the world, starting with the entire western hemisphere: The Pan American Highway.' According to Yeomans' Facebook profile, the couple got engaged in April 2024, sharing a video of the proposal with followers. Beyond YouTube, they also had a strong Instagram presence with nearly 74,000 followers. A description on their Toyota World Runners YouTube channel reads: "Matthew and Stacey built the world's first Land Cruiser Chinook in 100 days. Now set off on their journey to drive the Pan American and beyond, this is their story about the adventure, the personal growth, and choosing to LIVE life and create a legacy community of people who are seekers of the unknown. We are documenting our build, the trip plan, and hope to leave you with wisdom and inspiration for why we travel and how you can find fulfillment doing the same, in your own way. " Their final Instagram post, shared six days before the tragedy, featured photos from Vancouver Island and was captioned: "Really just soaking up all of these Vancouver island summer juices. Our first summer in a few years where we get to experience the seasons change and the joy the sun brings us soggy rainforest dogs as we come out of hiding."
