Sabah's 'Roberto Baggio' tipped to stand in Nabawan on KDM ticket in state polls

KOTA KINABALU: A former Sabah state footballer is being tipped to stand in the interior Nabawan seat on a Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) ticket in the coming 17th state election.
Jekerison Kilan, who left the sports arena for politics, is said to be the main challenger to incumbent assemblyman, Datuk Abdul Ghani Mohamed Yassin, representing Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).
Having spearheaded Nabawan KDM for two years, Jekerison, who is also Pensiangan KDM chairman, expressed his willingness to contest in the Nabawan state constituency if given the opportunity.
"I am always open and have no problem being a candidate because I have been prepared for a long time, both in terms of work experience and mentally, physically, and logistically.
"Over the past two years, I have frequently met with residents to delve into and understand the needs, hardships, and problems faced by the community in the Nabawan area,' he said.
Jekerison said that based on the latest trends in public support, Nabawan voters, who are predominantly from the Murut tribe, want 'change'.
According to him, many residents of Nabawan are disappointed with the current situation, especially the ongoing land issues and infrastructure problems.
The graduate with a Diploma in Political Science is determined to bring as much development as possible to the Nabawan state constituency for the good and well-being of the people if given the mandate.
Before his political career, Jekerison was celebrated as one of Sabah's top defenders while playing for the Rhinos from 1989 to 1998.
Recognised for his speed and strength, the Nabawan native from Kampung Malinja, affectionately known as "Roberto Baggio", also donned the Negri Sembilan team jersey in 1994.
Unlike the struggle on the football field, where the players' hard work and sweat were essential, Jekerison said life as a politician was more challenging because it is accompanied by heavy and holistic responsibilities, namely "solving all the people's problems".

Strong state-federal ties crucial for Sabah's progress, says Hajiji

RANAU: A robust partnership between the Sabah state government and the federal administration is essential for sustaining development in the region, according to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. Hajiji, who chairs Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), highlighted that the collaborative governance under the GRS-Pakatan Harapan (PH) alliance has significantly advanced Sabah's progress. He emphasised the importance of stability and unity with the federal government to ensure prosperity for the people. Under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) development agenda, more than 400 initiatives have been introduced, with 94% successfully executed. Hajiji noted that the GRS-PH government has rolled out unprecedented aid programmes for education and public welfare. This year, nearly 100,000 hardcore poor households in Sabah are receiving monthly assistance of RM300, a scheme set to continue if the coalition retains public support in the upcoming state election. The GRS Supreme Council has agreed to uphold its existing cooperation with PH for the election, reinforcing their shared commitment to Sabah's development. The 16th Sabah State Legislative Assembly will dissolve automatically on 11 November unless an earlier dissolution occurs. Separately, Hajiji announced that the state government, via the Sabah Housing and Town Development Authority (LPPB), remains dedicated to alleviating urban and rural poverty through new township projects. The Paginatan New Township, spanning 200 acres and located 43 km from Ranau, is expected to stimulate the local economy. The project, aligned with SMJ's welfare-focused goals, will feature government offices, shops, affordable housing, health centres, and multipurpose halls, developed in five phases. – Bernama

We want strong ties with Federal Govt, says Sabah CM on maintaing GRS-Pakatan pact

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will maintain the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)-Pakatan Harapan cooperation formula as it wants to continue its strong relationship with the federal government, said Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. The Chief Minister and GRS chairman reiterated that the GRS supreme council has agreed to maintain this present formula in the upcoming state election. "We want strong ties with the federal government. We want stability and we hope the people will understand that we are doing the best for them. To bring prosperity to them," he said during the ground-breaking ceremony for the Paginatan new township held at the Nunuk Ragang Memorial open-air hall, in Ranau. Hajiji added that history has shown that both state and federal governments must work together as the present GRS-Pakatan state government's track record of bringing progress to Sabah has been proven. He said Sabah has over 400 initiatives under the Hala Tuju Sabah Maju Jaya development agenda, with about 94% of them implemented thus far. He said this was contrary to the opposition's claim, which he said was intended to mislead the people. 'The GRS-Pakatan government had approved numerous assistance programmes for the state's education development and people's prosperity, which had never been done by other state governments. "This year alone, we are giving monthly assistance of RM300 to nearly 100,000 hardcore poor, and this initiative will be continued if the people returned the mandate to GRS-Pakatan in the coming election," he said. Hajiji also said that the GRS-Pakatan state government had succeeded in getting greater participation in the oil and gas sector through the historic signing of the Commercial Collaborative Agreement (CCA) with Petronas in 2021. Earlier, he said Sabah, through the Sabah Housing and Town Development Authority, is committed to continuing its agenda of addressing urban and rural poverty in the state. He said the long-awaited Paginatan New Township project is expected to drive the local economy in the area, in line with the Sabah Maju Jaya development roadmap. The 200-acre new township will be developed in five phases, involving the construction of various important amenities, including government offices, shops, low-cost housing, library, multi-purpose hall, health centre, market, police and fire stations. Once completed, people in Paginatan no longer have to go to Ranau or Telupid to deal with government departments, said Hajiji.

He said Antanom was not only a symbol of Murut bravery but also a true fighter who defended the rights of all people regardless of ethnicity. Advertisement 'His struggle was not based on tribal sentiment but on protecting the rights and dignity of all communities of his time,' Hajiji said in a speech read by Deputy Chief Minister cum Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam at the 19th Kalimaran Festival in Kemabong on Saturday. Hajiji said Antanom's spirit showed the value of the homeland and the people's self-worth, which must be preserved by all Sabahans. While born a Murut warrior, he said Antanom's fighting spirit and sacrifices belonged to every citizen, and Tenom's continued growth as a multi-ethnic district depended on harmony and political stability. He stressed that political stability was vital for implementing development policies under the Sabah Maju Jaya roadmap, while cultural heritage must be preserved with active youth participation to ensure traditions and values are passed down.
