The President of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) Mohammed Ben Sulayem will embark on a high-level visit to Japan this week, underscoring the strategic importance of the country in shaping the future of global mobility, automotive innovation, and motorsport development.
The visit reaffirms the FIA's commitment, as the global governing body for motorsport and the federation for mobility organisations worldwide, to collaborating with Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), global governments, mobility clubs and national sport authorities (ASNs) to advance sustainable mobility and inclusive motorsport growth.
Japan, as a leading technological and industrial powerhouse, plays a critical role in driving innovations that have far-reaching, worldwide impact.
Mobility innovation in the country is setting global standards, with advanced public transportation systems, smart city development, ongoing research into alternative fuels, and growing Mobility as a Service (MaaS) platforms. Last year's Japan Mobility Show attracted record numbers of over 1.25m as it emphasised sustainability and cross-industry collaboration.
In the sporting sector the Japan Automobile Federation (JAF) reported over 200,000 licensed drivers actively participating in motorsport – a growth of over 20% in the last five years, alongside record attendance at this year's Formula 1 Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka, marking the highest turnout since 2006.
During his visit, Ben Sulayem will engage in key discussions with prominent government leaders and stakeholders, including Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, Koji Murofushi the Commissioner of the Japan Sports Agency, and Hiromasa Nakano, Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
Speaking ahead of his visit, Mohammed Ben Sulayem said: 'Japan continues to be a beacon of technological leadership in the automotive sector, motorsport passion, and innovative mobility solutions which improve people's quality of life. MENA clubs back Sulayem for a second term as FIA president
Tribune News Network Dubai National motor sport and mobility authorities from across the MENA region have delivered another huge vote of confidence in Mohammed Ben Sulayem's leadership of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), and urged him to seek re- election as president. The 29 FIA member clubs have written to Ben Sulayem saying that his tenure 'has brought vital reforms across mobility and motorsport, marked by enhanced transparency, governance, sustainability, and inclusivity.' Backing him for a second term in office, they expressed confidence that this will 'further strengthen and modernize the organization for the benefit of all its members and stakeholders.' In a letter of support to Ben Sulayem, the clubs say: 'Your vision has helped bridge gaps, inspire unity, and empower regions like ours to contribute more meaningfully to the global FIA mission. 'We now feel equal as members of the FIA regardless of our size or location. We are proud to stand behind a leader from our region who has shown integrity, innovation, and courage in driving positive change on the world stage.' Among the senior regional officials to sign the letter were MENA FIA Vice President Mobility, Essa Hamza Al Failakawi from Kuwait, FIA Vice President for Sport – MENA, Abdulla bin Issa Al Khalifa from Bahrain, and Abdulrahman Al Mannai, President of the Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation. The clubs told Ben Sulayem: 'The modernization of our institution and the strong emphasis you have placed on member engagement and regional development have greatly benefited our clubs and the communities we serve.' President Ben Sulayem has responded by saying: 'I am deeply grateful for the trust and encouragement shown by the 29 Sport and Mobility Member Clubs from across the MENA region. Daunting new stage to kickstart Jordan Rally action
Tribune News Network Dead Sea (Jordan) A first pass through the daunting new 32km Tal Hilali special stage will kickstart the action at the 2025 Jordan Rally on Friday morning. Competitors led by 16-time event winner Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah and his Spanish co-driver Candido Carrera will then tackle a further 11 gravel stages over two days before the ceremonial finish at the lowest place on earth on Saturday afternoon. Twenty-one FIA cars and an additional seven crews competing only in two separate national rallies will compete this weekend. The event was officially flagged away from a new start venue at the Royal Automobile Club of Jordan (RACJ) after the pre-event press conference on Thursday evening. Teams had put their cars through customary technical scrutineering at the Dead Sea where a couple of potential front-runners were upbeat about their chances for the weekend. Oman's Abdullah Al Rawahi won the event outright in 2023 on his way to the MERC title. He said: 'This year has been very tough for us. We haven't had the results I was expecting. We have been trying really hard to push and close the gap to Nasser in terms of pace. Every year we try to learn more and more. The first three rallies didn't go as expected, especially in Oman. The first day we had to retire, in Qatar we got faster and faster and then we had punctures in Saudi Arabia. 'Jordan is where I started. It is different to other years but I love the terrain and the stages. They are tough. It is very slippery and the notes have to be precise. We are coming here to try and take the win. I am prepared better than last year where we were leading and had to retire.' Defending regional champion Abdulaziz Al Kuwari praised the condition of the rally tracks. The Citroën C3 driver said: 'I would like to thank the people who prepared the stages. They are amazing.' Thirty-five-year-old Rakan Al Rashed is taking part in the event for the third time after retiring a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX in 2016 and 2017 alongside Finnish co-driver Jarkko Kalliolepo. He is aiming for a podium finish on Saturday evening to continue his quest to become the regional champion. Rashid Al Muhannadi could mathematically confirm the FIA MERC4 title this weekend with two rounds to spare in the absence of rookie rival Mohammed Al Marri. The Qatari said: 'This is my first time in Jordan. The stages are nice but quite demanding and technical. I like the rally. I am looking to forward to it and I hope to win the championship.' On Friday, the opening Tal Hilali special starts at 09.44hrs and features a small section of the former Bahath special in the Jordan Valley and precedes runs through a high-speed Karameh (11.08km) stage and a special at the Baptism Site (11.34km) close to the Dead Sea. The three stages will then be then repeated in the afternoon after a return to the Dead Sea for a midday regroup and service. Follow the race live:
