Zairil withdraws defamation suit after activists retract unfounded allegations in Penang court settlement
GEORGE TOWN, June 6 — State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari yesterday withdrew his defamation suit against activists Ravinder Singh and Khoo Salma Nasution, following their retraction of allegedly defamatory remarks made during the 2023 Penang State Election.
Zairil confirmed the withdrawal at the Penang Sessions Court, stating that all parties acknowledged the allegations were unfounded.
'The case has reached its conclusion at the Penang Sessions Court today. Both defendants have retracted their statements and expressed sincere regret over the matter.
'As a result, I have agreed to withdraw my suit against them. May this serve as a lesson to always verify your facts before making unfounded allegations and irresponsible claims,' Zairil said in a statement posted on Facebook.
In a joint statement, Ravinder and Khoo acknowledged that their allegations were unfounded and expressed regret for any embarrassment, inconvenience, or reputational harm caused to Zairil as a result of their statements and any ensuing misunderstandings.
'The parties are unanimously of the opinion that bringing the matter to a close is in the best interest of all concerned. Khoo and Ravinder have removed the recording from their respective social media accounts and further undertake not to republish the same,' the statement read.
According to the statement, on Aug 5, 2023, a recording was uploaded by Khoo on her X account, depicting an interaction between herself and Ravinder during a civil protest against the Penang South Reclamation project.
The same recording was subsequently shared on Ravinder's Facebook page on Aug 22, 2023.
The recording referenced Zairil's role as a member of the Penang government and alleged that a familial connection influenced the appointment of the project delivery partner for the reclamation project. — Bernama

Donald Peter Mojuntin, whose father Peter Mojuntin died in the crash, said taking the matter to court would be excessive and that the families were not making any unreasonable demands, Harian Metro reported. 'We just want proper recognition,' he was quoted as saying during the 49th anniversary memorial of the tragedy at the Double Six Monument in Sembulan, Kota Kinabalu. Donald Peter Mojuntin. Donald, who was also representing the families of the other victims, said the proposed foundation could serve to honour the victims and support their descendants, particularly in education and other areas of need. He said there are plans to involve more young people, including students, in future events commemorating the incident. 'We also propose inviting a representative from the federal government to next year's 50th anniversary ceremony so they can better understand and appreciate the historical significance of this tragedy,' he said. The Australian report concluded that Sabah Air, the operator of the flight, was functioning illegally at the time, with its operations manual unapproved by the then federal civil aviation department.

JPJ opens probe paper on lorry company in fatal FRU crash

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The road transport department (JPJ) has opened an investigation paper on the lorry company involved in the accident that took the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit personnel in Teluk Intan, Perak last month. JPJ senior director (enforcement) Kifli Ma Hassan said the investigation was being conducted under Section 57 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010, relating to operator licence conditions. 'JPJ has seized the lorry involved, and the investigating officer has been instructed to complete the investigation paper by the end of this month. 'Once completed, the investigation paper will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor for further action,' Bernama quoted him as saying. Klifli said the initial investigation found that the lorry company had violated its permit conditions. 'The lorry company was found to have violated the permit conditions by carrying an unauthorised load, namely rocks, while the approved permit was to transport coal. 'We are still investigating the case and appropriate action will be taken,' he said. On May 12, a lorry collided with a truck carrying 18 FRU members on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampan in Teluk Intan, while they were on their way back to Ipoh. Nine FRU members were killed, while nine others were injured.
