Seamless service and zero incidents: Solapur Railway Division's remarkable handling of Ashadhi Fair pilgrims
As per the information provided by the railway officials, more than two lakh passengers passed through Pandharpur Railway Station alone between July 1 and July 10. In response to the surge, the division successfully operated 239 trains — 121 special and 118 regular — on a single-line section, an exceptional feat of coordination. On the main day of Ekadashi (July 6), 22 trains were run, followed by 18 trains the next day to disperse the massive crowd.
Meticulous planning and logistical arrangements
Thanks to meticulous planning and teamwork, the entire operation concluded with zero injuries or casualties, marking a significant achievement in crowd management. This success was made possible not only through logistical arrangements but also through the dedication and selfless service of railway staff, security forces, and civil defence volunteers, who guided elderly passengers, provided medical aid, and ensured order at every step.
To make ticketing effortless, the existing infrastructure was scaled up with nine additional Unreserved Ticketing Systems (UTS), Automatic Ticket Vending Machines (ATVMs) and Mobile UTS Terminals (electronic devices or tablets carried by ticketing staff). Three holding zones covering 2,680 square metres, equipped with drinking water and toilet facilities, were set up to accommodate pilgrims during peak rush hours. Over 50 passenger guidance boards and special timetables were installed across the city and station to direct devotees to key locations, aided by 24/7 help desks manned by Commercial and RPF staff.
Electrical supply was ensured through two standby diesel generator sets of 125 KV each. Indicator boards, including five-line and single-line displays, were placed across platforms and waiting areas. Security was strengthened with increased deployment of personnel and the installation of CCTV cameras and megaphones, with a control room set up at the CCTV hub to oversee safety.
Health and emergency arrangements were comprehensive, with a dedicated team of 13 medical personnel, including three doctors on constant duty, supported by ambulance services and volunteers. Cleanliness and hygiene were maintained with 150 mobile toilets, 60 permanent toilets, 20 bathrooms, and continuous sanitation work. Drinking water was made available through 91 taps, with free packaged water and juice distributed by the State for the benefit of the devotees.
Commitment to public service
'To handle the massive turnout efficiently, commercial staff were deployed for ticket issuance and checking, while commercial supervisors managed crowd control in shifts. Officers from various departments, including operating, commercial, electrical, signal and telecommunications, engineering, security, and medical, worked in close coordination. The Ashadhi Fair 2025 showcased the Solapur Division's unwavering commitment to public service,' Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Sujeet Mishra, who supervised operations from Kurduvadi station, said.
At Pandharpur station, on-ground supervision was led by Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Sr DCM) Yogesh Patil, Divisional Security Commissioner (DSC) RPF Aditya, Assistant Security Commissioner (ASC) RPF Shri Rajeev Kanuajia, and Assistant Operating Manager (AOM) Shri Lakhanji Jha. Their efforts, supported by a committed team, ensured end-to-end operational readiness.

Work on ‘Alappuzha – A Global Water Wonderland' project set to begin
Work on the 'Alappuzha- A Global Water Wonderland' project under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme is set to begin soon. The project will be implemented at a cost of ₹93.17 crore, including ₹74.95 crore provided as a loan by the Union government. The State government has designated the Kerala Tourism Infrastructure Limited as the nodal agency for its implementation. A preliminary meeting ahead of the project launch was held recently. District Collector Alex Varghese, MLAs P.P. Chitharanjan and H. Salam and others attended the meeting. The project includes transforming the Alappuzha beach, canals and backwaters into an 'iconic global tourist destination.' The beachfront development, which envisions an ecologically sensitive upgrade of the area, includes setting up promenade walkways, parking lots, seating spaces, lighting, landscaping, spaces for conducting events, an Indian Coast Guard station, outdoor sports courts, and waste management, among other amenities. The canal-side transformation aims to restore and revitalise the historic canals of Alappuzha town, 'reintroducing them as thriving public spaces while respecting their ecological and cultural significance'. Planned works include walkways, seating, lighting, plazas, boat docks, cafes and boat jetty development. An international cruise terminal with parking, marina, experience centre, information kiosks, water adventure zone, restaurant, and toilets will come up at Punnamada Finishing Point. Mr. Varghese said that steps would be taken to obtain all necessary approvals from various departments at the earliest. The aim is to complete the project by February 2026, he added.

$15,000 visa bond: US tightens rules for visitors from overstay countries
Soon, visitors to the US could be asked to pay bonds of up to $15,000. Starting August 20, 2025, the United States could start requiring bonds of up to $15,000 (Rs 13 lakh) for certain tourist and business visa applicants. The move is part of a pilot programme to discourage visitors from overstaying their visas, according to a government notice seen by Business Standard on Monday. Under this programme, US consular officers will be given the authority to impose bonds on visitors from countries with high rates of visa overstays or where screening and vetting information is considered inadequate. Which visas are affected and who decides? The programme applies to B-1 (business) and B-2 (tourist) visas. Consular officers will have discretion to impose bonds of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000, but the default expectation is $10,000, the notice said. These funds will be refunded if the traveller leaves the US within the permitted time. This initiative is linked to Executive Order 14159, 'Protecting The American People Against Invasion,' which directs the Departments of Treasury, State, and Homeland Security to establish a bond administration system under the Immigration and Nationality Act. A spokesperson for the State Department said countries will be identified based on 'high overstay rates, screening and vetting deficiencies, concerns regarding acquisition of citizenship by investment without a residency requirement, and foreign policy considerations.' The countries likely to be impacted While no formal list has been published yet, the notice mentioned that countries with high visa overstay rates, particularly in Africa and Asia, are under scrutiny. Nations previously targeted by Trump's travel ban—including Chad, Eritrea, Haiti, Myanmar, and Yemen—are also likely candidates. Customs and Border Protection data for fiscal year 2023 showed that countries like Burundi, Djibouti, and Togo recorded high overstay rates. Additionally, 12,882 Indian nationals on leisure or business trips overstayed their visas in 2023, as per the US Entry/Exit Overstay Report. When does the programme start and how long will it run? The pilot programme will go into effect on August 20 and is expected to run for about a year. A similar attempt was made in November 2020 during the final months of Trump's first term but was never fully rolled out due to pandemic-related travel disruptions. Trump's immigration crackdown continues Former US President Donald Trump has consistently focused on tightening immigration controls. He issued a travel ban in June that restricted entry for citizens of 19 countries on national security grounds. These actions have already impacted travel trends—transatlantic airfares in May dropped to pre-pandemic levels, while travel from Canada and Mexico to the US fell 20% year-on-year. $250 visa integrity fee adds another layer Alongside the visa bond pilot, a $250 'visa integrity fee' will be introduced on October 1. This fee, passed as part of a spending package in July, will be charged to all non-immigrant visa applicants once their visa is approved. The U.S. Travel Association has voiced concerns, saying, 'If implemented, the U.S. will have one of, if not the highest, visitor visa fees in the world.' The group estimates that around 2,000 applicants from a handful of countries with low travel volume to the US will be affected by the bond programme. Amarnath yatra: ‘Chhari Mubarak' begins journey to cave shrine
The final leg of the Amarnath yatra began on Monday with Mahant Deependra Giri taking out the 'Chhari Mubarak', sacred mace of Lord Shiva, from its abode at Dashnami Akhara Temple for its journey to the cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas. The procession reached Shiv Mandir Bijbehara, Anantnag in south Kashmir and is expected to reach Chandanwari in Pahalgam on August 6 and then further up till it reaches the cave shrine. (File) The religious procession will reach the shrine on August 9 when the yatra is officially scheduled to end coinciding with Hindu religious occasion of Shravan Purnima. 'The journey begins from the Shri Amareshwar Temple located in Dashnami Akhara. During the night of Dashmi and Ekadashi, the journey will continue towards Pahalgam,' Giri said. The procession reached Shiv Mandir Bijbehara, Anantnag in south Kashmir and is expected to reach Chandanwari in Pahalgam on August 6 and then further up till it reaches the cave shrine. Every year hundreds of thousands of Hindu devotees from across the country visit the Amarnath cave shrine situated at a height of 3,880 metre in the Himalayas passing through treacherous mountain routes, glaciers and ice fed streams. Pahalgam is one of the two main base camps of the Amarnath yatra. More than 4.10 lakh yatris paid obeisance at the cave shrine this year so far. But the weather has been a challenge owing to continuous heavy rains leading to suspension of yatra on and off in the past over a week. Last year, around 5,12,000 pilgrims had performed the yatra, the highest in over a highest-ever number of pilgrims to visit the shrine was in 2011 and 2012 at 6.35 lakh and 6.22 lakh, respectively.
