Shafie denies link to coup bid

By: FMT Text Size: 'Langkah Kinabalu was not my move. Ask them what they were fighting about. We (Warisan) are the opposition,' Shafie said. Kuala Lumpur: Parti Warisan President Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal has categorically denied his party's involvement in the 'Langkah Kinabalu' move that attempted to topple the Sabah Government led by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor in early January 2023. The former Sabah Chief Minister dismissed claims linking Warisan to the political episode, which Kunak Assemblywoman Datuk Norazlina Arif described as a betrayal of public trust. Speaking to FMT at Parliament, Shafie attributed the Langkah Kinabalu incident to internal disputes between Hajiji and Sabah Umno Chief Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, rather than any orchestrated move by his opposition party. 'Langkah Kinabalu was not my move. Ask them what they were fighting about. We (Warisan) are the opposition,' he said. The controversy resurfaced after Norazlina, who was with Warisan during the attempted takeover, publicly criticised the move as 'the greatest betrayal' of Sabahans who expected unity similar to the federal Unity Government. She said the political manoeuvre was allegedly motivated by promises of four to five Sabah Cabinet positions for Warisan leaders. The takeover attempt ultimately failed due to insufficient support, with six Umno assemblymen backing Hajiji and strengthening his position. Hajiji, who became Chief Minister in September 2020, retained support from GRS and Pakatan Harapan representatives, including Norazlina at the time. Following the failed coup attempt, Bung was removed from his Deputy Chief Minister post, replaced by Tanjung Keramat Assemblyman Datuk Shahelmey Yahya. Norazlina subsequently left Warisan on Feb 6, 2023. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Phoong hopeful Malaysia–US friendship will spur new opportunities
Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 Text Size: Phoong greets Carver at the luncheon. KOTA KINABALU: Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe has expressed hope that the enduring friendship between Malaysia and the United States (US) will pave the way for greater collaboration and new opportunities for the state. Phoong met with Chris Carver, Political Counsellor of the US Embassy in Malaysia, during a luncheon here on Monday where they exchanged views on bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and potential areas of partnership to support Sabah's development. The minister highlighted recent investments by US firm ConocoPhillips in Sabah's oil and gas industry, noting the state's resources, location, and transformation as key factors drawing international interest. He also welcomed the Embassy's 'sports diplomacy' programmes in Sabah, which have included basketball mentoring sessions and cultural exchanges in football, saying such initiatives strengthened ties and inspired local youth. Carver reaffirmed Washington's commitment to Malaysia–U.S. relations, while Phoong reiterated Sabah's readiness to enhance cooperation across government, business, and cultural linkages for the benefit of its people. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Beware attempts by certain quarters to undermine national unity, PM cautions
Published on: Monday, August 18, 2025 Published on: Mon, Aug 18, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Anwar addresses the attendees of the event. - fotoBERNAMA CYBERJAYA: Malaysians have been reminded to remain vigilant and not fall prey to attempts by certain quarters to exploit sensitive issues with the aim of undermining national unity, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, stressed that every issue in the country must be addressed responsibly, as Malaysia is a nation governed by clear laws. Citing the Jalur Gemilang issue as an example, he said the government would not protect anyone found guilty of misconduct and that appropriate action would be taken against them. 'This is a nation of laws, with its own rules. That is why I established the Ministry of National Unity, because I believe political stability is essential for the country. 'A nation must be taught, and must learn from the experiences of others. No country in the world can remain safe when racial or religious hatred is allowed to grow,' he said during the 'Temu Anwar@Multimedia University (MMU)' programme here today. He was responding to a student's question on the government's efforts to implement the national unity agenda and combat racism at its roots. Anwar, meanwhile, praised the awareness shown by the younger generation and commended students for their awareness of the importance of unity and solidarity in building a progressive and successful nation. 'This growing awareness among youths gives us hope that this nation can be rebuilt on stronger foundations. 'With such positive attitudes among young Malaysians, the future of our unity looks promising. Still, we must remain cautious, for there are always those who will attempt to provoke and divide,' he said. Anwar cited the case of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir, whose death was manipulated by certain quarters to suggest government negligence. 'If the case involves murder or bullying, it does not matter whose child is involved… we will investigate thoroughly and prosecute. But do not accuse us of trying to conceal the truth. 'What reason would we have to cover up for anyone? If you commit a criminal offence, it makes no difference who you are. If you are guilty, you face the punishment. That is the principle we uphold,' he stressed. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Don't be fooled into thinking PAS is more rational, Puad tells Ti
Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said while MCA's Ti Lian Ker had 'sanctified' PAS, the Islamic party has not yet done the same for Ti. PETALING JAYA : Umno Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi has reminded MCA's Ti Lian Ker of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's 1981 sermon on kafirs (infidels), saying it stands against Ti's claim that the Islamic party is more rational than Umno. In a Facebook post, he said while Ti had 'sanctified' PAS in the matter of the Jalur Gemilang controversy, the party has not yet done the same for Ti. Puad also mentioned former law minister Zaid Ibrahim, who had agreed with Ti that PAS was the more rational party compared to Umno. 'Perhaps they have not read 'Amanat Hadi', which Hadi has not retracted to this day. That sermon is the reason for the widespread labelling of others as kafirs (infidels) and for PAS's penchant for judgment – this is halal, that is haram. Is that the wisdom Ti and Zaid are so proud of?' Puad said. Ti was quoted by Malaysiakini last week as saying that PAS seemed more rational, given the relentless attacks made by Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh on Umno's coalition allies in the unity government. 'Akmal's actions, in this respect, are worse than his contemporaries in PAS. PAS leaders seem more rational and composed in their words and deeds,' Ti was quoted as saying. However, Puad pointed out that non-Malay parties not politically allied with PAS had been accused by the party of being anti-Islam. 'When PAS and DAP were together, PAS said DAP understood Islam better than Umno. Now it calls DAP anti-Islam. What wisdom is this?' Puad said. 'Ti and Zaid forget that Umno pioneered cooperation with non-Malay parties, in forming the Alliance party, which then became Barisan Nasional. That is the multiracial politics practised by Umno,' he said. Puad said Umno had been accused of being an 'assobiyah' party (extremely opposed to other ethnic groups) for its basis in Malay nationalism. 'But Ti and Zaid do not fully understand Umno's Malay nationalism. Umno defends the unwritten 'social contract'. This is why vernacular schools exist to this day. They must be reminded that Umno's fight for the Malays has never strayed from the Malays' special rights contained in the constitution. Do Ti and Zaid not consider that wisdom?' Puad said. He urged them not to let Akmal's defence of the national flag make them think that PAS is wiser. 'Akmal has never linked the flag issue with race,' he said.
