Five Questions for Melinda French Gates

Five Questions for Melinda French Gates

① Critics say philanthropy has been astonishingly ineffective at solving societal problems—that giving has increased, but problems have gotten worse.
I would beg to differ. We know millions of people are alive because of the lifesaving vaccines that have been developed and given around the world. Moms and dads in low-income countries line up to get measles vaccines for their children, because you know what? A measles outbreak in their community means that kids die. Has all of philanthropy been great? No. Philanthropy is only one tool in the toolbox. Philanthropy can take a risk that we wouldn't want government to take with our taxpayer funding, but it can prove things out at scale, and then governments can come in to scale that up.

‘Bobby Kennedy is going to kill more people than any Cabinet secretary': James Carville warns of RFK Jr's vaccine plan

Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville condemned Robert F Kennedy Jr.'s vaccine strategy, cautioning that the Health and Human Services Secretary's policies could have dire outcomes for the nation, including a body count. In an appearance on The Will Cain Show on Fox News, Carville warned: 'Bobby Kennedy is going to kill more people than any Cabinet secretary, maybe in history, with his idiotic vaccine policy.' He added that vaccines are 'the greatest public health intervention in the history of the world,' blasting Kennedy for what he described as fostering distrust in vaccines. 'He has expressed vaccine skepticism at every point,' Carville continued. 'Every notable public health person thinks that vaccines are the greatest public health innovation in the history of the world.' 'What he's doing is going to kill people,' he said, underlining his point. There has been widespread criticism of Kennedy's decision to purge all 17 members of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's vaccine advisory panel, citing 'historical corruption.' He then replaced them with a hand-picked panel of eight, whom he said were 'committed to evidence-based medicine, gold-standard science, and common sense,' and who wouldn't be 'ideological anti-vaxxers.' In announcing the new panel, Kennedy noted that each of them has committed to 'demanding definitive safety and efficacy data before making any new vaccine recommendations' and that the committee would review safety and efficacy data for the current schedule. However, the moves have been concerning to experts, who noted that several members have been critical of vaccines. The fired panel members have said that their ousting signaled that scientific expertise was 'no longer of use' under Kennedy and that that decision would 'undermine public trust in the vaccine process,' at a time when vaccine hesitancy has led to the spread of measles and other diseases. The new members are set to meet on June 25 to review safety and efficacy data for the current immunization schedule.

Vaccine Expert Tears Into RFK Jr. After Quitting CDC: ‘Americans Are Going to Die'

One of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's top vaccine specialists has warned that Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s anti-vax policies will cause 'a lot of Americans to die' after resigning from the agency on Monday. Dr. Fiona Havers spent 13 years with the CDC as a senior advisor on vaccine policy, developing a reputation as one of the world's leading figures on immunization. But following a series of escalating attacks on the agency from RFK Jr., starting with his announcement last month that the agency would no longer recommend Covid vaccines to pregnant women and culminating in his sacking of all 17 members of the agency's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACPIC), Havers was forced to hand in her resignation. 'It's a very transparent, rigorous process, and they have just taken a sledgehammer to it in the last several weeks,' Havers told The New York Times. 'CDC processes are being corrupted in a way that I haven't seen before.' Following the dismissal of the ACPIC team, Kennedy appointed eight new members to the committee, at least half of whom have publicly testified against vaccines in high-profile trials. One appointee in particular, Vicky Pebsworth, is a board member of the National Vaccine Information Center, an anti-vax organization which spreads conspiracy theories about vaccine injuries and deaths. 'I could not be party to legitimizing this new committee,' said Havers. 'I just no longer had confidence that the data that we were generating was going to be used objectively.' 'If it isn't stopped, and some of this isn't reversed, like, immediately, a lot of Americans are going to die as a result of vaccine-preventable diseases,' she added. Havers is at least the second CDC official to resign in protest of the Trump administration's increasing antagonism towards vaccines, following Covid expert Dr. Lakshmi Panagiotakopoulos who resigned two weeks earlier after claiming she 'can no longer help the most vulnerable populations.' 'My career in public health and vaccines was born out of a deep desire to help the most vulnerable. That's a value I can no longer uphold in this role,' she wrote in an internal email to colleagues following the resignation. A number of Havers' colleagues are also considering similar moves, with several officials rumored to be on the verge of resigning in protest of the weakening of the CDC's authority. In an article published in JAMA on Monday, a number of fired ACPIC panelists claimed 'Secretary Kennedy's process blurs lines of legal authority' and that he had 'left the U.S. vaccine program critically weakened.' Dr. Camille Kotton, a former member of ACPIC who departed from the role last year, told the Times 'My whole career, I have relied on everything that came from the CDC as the most powerful and best information available. 'Now, we're at a time where it seems increasingly likely that we will not be able to trust information coming from the CDC,' she added. It's not just the ACPIC committee who have been sidelined by the current administration either—thousands of colleagues at the agency have lost their jobs under Kennedy's tenure. And while Havers says she has nothing but respect for colleagues who choose to stay and fight the new regime, 'what happened last week was the last straw for me.' A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services told the Daily Beast that, 'under Secretary Kennedy's leadership, HHS is committed to following the gold standard of scientific integrity. 'Vaccine policy decisions will be based on objective data, transparent analysis, and evidence–not conflicts of interest or industry influence.'

RFK Jr. Lands on Next Target of His MAHA Crusade

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has tasked his newly appointed panel of vaccine advisers with probing an ingredient long-targeted by anti-vaxxers for disproven links to autism. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), a panel under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will discuss the vaccine preservative thimerosal in its June 26 meeting, according to a draft agenda. The advisory committee previously had 17 members who were all sacked by Kennedy earlier this month and replaced with eight new ones, including anti-vaccine voices like Dr. Robert Malone, who pushed COVID-19 conspiracies in a 2021 episode of The Joe Rogan Experience. Thimerosal, a preservative that is used to prevent microbial growth in vaccines, has long been targeted by anti-vaccine activists because it contains mercury. Kennedy himself authored a book in 2014 that advocated for the removal of thimerosal from vaccines, erroneously linking it to autism. Kennedy claimed that thimerosal is 'immensely toxic to brain tissue,' but multiple peer-reviewed studies, as well as health agencies like the CDC and Food and Drug Administration, have long maintained there is no link between the ingredient and autism. 'Many well-conducted studies have concluded that thimerosal in vaccines does not contribute to the development of autism,' the CDC says on its website. 'Even after thimerosal was removed from almost all childhood vaccines, autism rates continued to increase, which is the opposite of what would be expected if thimerosal caused autism.' The FDA similarly stated that 'scientific studies of the risk of other serious neurodevelopmental disorders have failed to support a causal link with thimerosal.' As a precautionary measure, however, the FDA in 1999 recommended the removal of thimerosal from vaccines routinely given to infants. The use of the ingredient has also dropped sharply over the years as many vaccines were reformulated to single-dose packaging. Jeremy Faust, editor-in-chief of MedPage Today, warned in an op-ed that the anti-vaccine movement will take the inclusion of thimerosal in the vaccine panel's agenda as 'a major win.' 'To be clear, removing the compound will do nothing to improve vaccine safety, but it certainly will undermine confidence in other existing vaccines,' he wrote. 'While there are many alternatives for influenza vaccines that do not contain thimerosal, elevating this debunked myth to national policy lends credence to misinformation, and sets the stage for other actions that may undermine vaccine confidence in the United States.' Last month, Kennedy removed COVID-19 vaccines from the list of shots recommended for children and pregnant women. Dr. Fiona Havers, a physician who oversaw respiratory virus data—including hospitalization rates for COVID-19—resigned as a top vaccine specialist for the CDC on Monday in the wake of Kennedy's controversial overhaul of the agency. 'If it isn't stopped, and some of this isn't reversed, like, immediately, a lot of Americans are going to die as a result of vaccine-preventable diseases,' she said in an interview with The New York Times.
