The star-studded cast included Kelvin Harrison Jr., Halle Bailey, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Brian Tyree Henry, Janelle Monáe and Missy Elliott. The project was set in Virginia Beach during the summer of 1977 and inspired by Atlantis Apartments, the neighborhood where Williams grew up. Gondry helmed the musical from a script by Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson, while Williams was a producer alongside Mimi Valdés and Gil Netter.
'When all of us got into the editing room, we collectively decided there wasn't a path forward to tell the version of this story that we originally envisioned,' Williams and Gondry said in a joint statement shared with The Hollywood Reporter. 'We appreciate all the hard work of the talented cast and crew. While we're disappointed, we can't deliver this film, we have incredible partners at Universal and will collaborate in a different capacity again soon.'
Williams has a long relationship with Universal, including having worked on the music for the Despicable Me franchise.
Gondry has helmed such scripted features as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep, Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet, along with the music-focused documentary Dave Chappelle's Block Party. The filmmaker won an Oscar for his work on the script for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Variety was first to report the news of the movie not going forward.
More to come.

Sydney Sweeney Gained 30 Pounds for 'Crazy' Christy Martin Biopic Transformation
Sydney Sweeney is revealing the details of her 'crazy' body transformation to play professional boxer Christy Martin. During a Monday profile with W Magazine, the Euphoria actress opened up about the rigorous training schedule she endured to portray the boxer. Sweeney went through three and a half months of training, which resulted in her gaining over 30 pounds for the role. More from The Hollywood Reporter Kansas City Chiefs' Foolish Club Studios Sets Executive Team (Exclusive) Whoopi Goldberg Co-Founded All Women's Sports Network, Pluto TV Launch FAST Channel Coco Gauff vs. Aryna Sabalenka: How to Stream the French Open Women's Final Online for Free 'I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training,' she said. 'I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.' Sweeney admitted that 'my body was completely different' because of all the training, which led to her not being able to 'fit in any of my clothes.' 'I'm usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27,' Sweeney recounted. 'My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, 'Oh my God.'' Still, the Emmy nominee didn't mind the shift in physical appearance. 'It was amazing: I was so strong, like crazy strong,' she added. Sweeney confirmed she was starring in the forthcoming Martin biopic in October of last year 'thanks to some paps in bushes,' she wrote on Instagram at the time. When announcing the news, she shared a photo of herself as Martin, sporting brown curly hair and toned arms. Martin is regarded as one of the most prolific female boxers of all time, beginning her career in 1989 before she retired in 2012. She won the WBC female super welterweight world champion title in 2009 and is the only female boxer to cover Sports Illustrated. Martin nearly died in 2010 when her husband, Jim Martin, stabbed her and shot her in the chest. After surviving the murder attempt, Jim was sentenced to 25 years in prison. 'Over the past few months, I've been immersed in training to bring to life the story of an incredible woman — a true champion who fought battles both inside and outside the ring,' Sweeney wrote. 'Her journey is a testament to resilience, strength, and hope, and I'm honored to step into her shoes to share her powerful story with you all. More to come soon.' The Director of ‘How to Train Your Dragon' Talks Beefing Up Gerard Butler's Arc
Director Dean DeBlois and star Gerard Butler reunite for Universal Pictures' live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon out later this week. The filmmaker sat down with io9 to discuss the unique opportunity he and Butler had in re-imagining the role of Stoick the Vast, Berk's Viking leader with staunch Dragon hunting inclinations who's also a single dad to his overprotected son Hiccup (Mason Thames). DeBlois explained his approach to directing Butler in the live-action feature. 'I think one of my aspirations going into this live-action reimagining was to dial up the relationships, the key ones, so Stoick and Hiccup have much depth going on—that push and pull of love and expectation,' he said. '[It's] something that so many kids feel and parents feel when their kid is not turning out the way that they want them to. I wanted to lean into that a little bit more because that just feels very timeless, and kind of travels the globe in terms of cultural specificity.' Butler previously voiced the character in the animated franchise from DreamWorks. Together the collaborators quickly eased back into the world of Berk and finding who Stoick is this time around. 'With Gerard, the moment that he came aboard it was sort of [like] visiting with an old friend because Gerard had such a strong input into who Stoick was in that first movie,' DeBlois said. 'He was like co-creator of the character; finding all of the nuance and the range and the arc that he undergoes was a conversation with [him], rather than us just telling him what he was going to do.' Deepening the emotional relationship between Stoick and Hiccup was a key part of the new film's narrative. 'I think when he was able to step into those boots for real and have that 90 pound costume put on—the five pieces of his beard and wig, which he complained about all the time—he is that character,' DeBlois said. 'All of that weight and burden becomes part of his emotional burden as well, because he's trying to keep this tribe together, keep fighting for the purpose that they came to this island for—yet somehow [also] be a single parent and navigate his way through that with a kid that he doesn't understand,' he added. 'I love that he finds so much nuance and depth in all of those tasks as an actor.' Stoick's arc with Toothless, which comes into play in a big way in How to Train Your Dragon 2, also gets more set-up time, much to the anticipation of fans of the animated franchise. 'We know where it's headed in future installations, but in this movie I really like those moments where Stoick and Toothless have to face off a little bit and to go from enemies to sort of a mutual understanding that they will save one another,' DeBlois said. 'There's a strength there and just the very truthful apology that Stoick makes to Toothless near the end of the movie feels very authentic. Those are not crocodile tears, that's true emotion coming through, the remorse and the regret and the change that Stoick undergoes.' How to Train Your Dragon opens June 13.

Eminem allegedly wanted rumored ex Mariah Carey to play his mother in ‘8 Mile'
We belong together — as mother and son. Eminem — who starred as aspiring rapper B-Rabbit in '8 Mile,' the 2002 movie based on his own life — reportedly had a certain pop superstar in mind to play the role of his alcoholic mom, who he lives with in a trailer home. And it was none other than Mariah Carey, according to producer Damion 'Damizza' Young, who was working with the legendary singer at the time. 7 After Mariah Carey was reportedly offered the role, Kim Basinger played Eminem's mother in 2002's '8 MIle.' ©Universal/Courtesy Everett Collection 7 Mariah Carey performed her new single 'Type Dangerous' at the BET Awards on Monday night. ©Universal/Courtesy Everett Collection It all began when Eminem requested a meeting with Carey, Damizza said on the 'TFU Podcast.' 'I'm not getting in the middle of that. I know how this ends,' he said. Damizza claimed that Carey initially turned down the meeting before she heard about the movie, alleging she eventually agreed to it. 'The first thing out of [Eminem's] mouth is, 'I want you to play my mother,'' Damizza recalled. But Carey, who at 56 is only four years older than Eminem, was allegedly insulted by the offer. 'Her insecurities kicked in big time,' he said. 7 Eminem performed at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York Billboard via Getty Images Although Carey never went on to join the cast of '8 Mile' — with the role of Eminem's mom going to Oscar-winning actress Kim Basinger — Damizza alleged that the meeting was the catalyst for the long-rumored romance between the two music icons. 'It was her chasing him, not him chasing her,' he said. 'Next thing I know, we are at Eminem's house … and they disappear. The second they went into his room, literally, I was like, 'I'm going back to LA. There is no point of me being here.' 'It went from business to f—king,' he claimed. 7 Mariah Carey dressed in an Eminem-like disguise as a stalker in her 2009 'Obsessed' video. That led the 'We Be Together' singer to seemingly take aim at Eminem on her 2009 hit 'Obsessed.' 'Telling the world how much you miss me/But we never were, so why you tripping?' sings Carey, who also donned an Eminem-like disguise as a stalker in the music video. 7 Eminem won a Best Original Song Oscar for 'Lose Yourself' from his 2002 film '8 Mile.' 'Wow Mariah, didn't expect you to go balls out/ Bitch, shut the f—k up 'fore I put all them phone calls out,' he rapped. These days, though, Carey has put the Eminem feud far behind her. On Friday, she dropped 'Type Dangerous,' her first proper single since 2018's 'Caution.' She performed the new track on Monday night at the BET Awards, where she received the Ultimate Icon Award. 'This means so much, especially coming from BET,' Carey said. 'This is my first BET Award. I mean, if you're gonna get one, might as well start with the Ultimate Icon Award.' She continued, 'It took me a while, but I finally realized life is far too short to live for anyone else's approval, which is something I always did. So I decided to own who I am—my extra-ness, my fabulousness and, yes, my success and my iconic-ness.'
