Mariano Rivera had targeted Old-Timers' Day to share a moment and share advice with struggling Yankees reliever Devin Williams, believing he could help.
The greatest closer of all time never made it to Williams because of an injury that has sparked concern.
Rivera suffered a leg injury during the alumni game, the Yankees said after the festivities and after the 5-4 win over the Astros in The Bronx. The extent of the injury or the exact timing — he ran the bases on a single and played the outfield during the brief exhibition — is unclear.
Rivera has famously had a history of freak practice injuries. In May 2012, he was shagging fly balls before a game and tore his ACL, getting knocked out for the rest of that season.
The injury sidetracked Rivera's intention to speak with Williams. Before the festivities, Rivera said he did not want to reveal his precise message.

Rivera — the first and only unanimously voted Hall of Famer and unquestionably the best reliever ever — did not have a ton of struggles through 19 seasons, but he still learned how to handle the adversity that comes with the game and comes with the closer role.
'Forget about it,' Rivera said about overcoming struggles such as a blown save. 'You can't do nothing about it. What's done is done. Move on and be confident. You have to be confident in yourself. If you're not confident in yourself, why are you playing the sport?'

A night earlier, Williams acknowledged his confidence is not 'as high as it's ever been,' after essentially costing his team a third game in as many appearances. Williams, a two-time All-Star with the Brewers who has been among the best arms in the game in his career, owns a 5.73 ERA and has allowed at least a run in his past five games.
'Any time Mo's around, I know guys — not just guys in the pen, but everyone — appreciate the wisdom he provides,' manager Aaron Boone said before the win. 'What Mariano was so good at was just that he wasn't affected by yesterday's performance.'
Boone has said he wants to find less-stressful situations for Williams to help reclaim his confidence.
'[Williams] needs to be a little more positive,' said Old-Timer Jorge Posada, who knew how to guide pitchers through rough times. 'You got to get him through … these key situations. Hopefully he gets his mind right.'

Yankees' Aaron Judge Shares Thoughts on Giancarlo Stanton's Selflessness
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Aaron Judge has primarily served as a designated hitter since returning from the injured list, and Giancarlo Stanton has played games in right field for the first time in two years. Stanton's willingness to play outfield, despite his injury history, shows a selflessness that is appreciated by Judge and his New York Yankees teammates. NEW YORK, NY - AUGUST 12: Giancarlo Stanton #27 of the New York Yankees looks on after hitting a solo home run during the game against the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium on August 12,... NEW YORK, NY - AUGUST 12: Giancarlo Stanton #27 of the New York Yankees looks on after hitting a solo home run during the game against the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium on August 12, 2025 in New York, New York. More New"He's a leader," Judge told Chris Kirschner of The Athletic. "This guy's been one of the best in the game for quite a long time, and for him to come in and start the season -- they kind of tell him just focus on hitting and just focus on coming back. It just speaks volumes to the leadership. You know what he means to this team, and how it's about what we can do to put the best team out there on the field. Ever since he's come back, he's been dialed in." Stanton has produced a 161 OPS+ entering Wednesday, the third-highest number of his career. While he only has 140 at-bats this season, it's a promising sign for the 35-year-old slugger. Both of the years where he finished with an OPS+ higher than this, he was among the top-2 in the National League MVP race -- including winning the award in 2017. "Better things happen when I get it in the air," Stanton told Kirschner. That certainly is the case this season as his 19.2° launch angle is the best of his career. Stanton's performances are helping to keep the Yankees in the playoff race, and anything they get from him in the outfield is an added bonus. At 45, Venus Williams earns her 25th U.S. Open singles draw
Tennis legend Venus Williams will make her return to the U.S. Open after earning a wild card draw for the prestigious Grand Slam tournament that starts on August 24. File Photo by John Angelillo/UPI | License Photo Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Two-time U.S. Open champion Venus Williams has secured her 25th main draw in the prestigious tennis tournament at age 45 amid a recent comeback attempt. Williams is one of eight women who obtained wild card draws for the competition that begins with qualifying rounds on Tuesday, the U.S. Open announced on Wednesday. The main event runs from Aug. 24 through Sept. 7. Williams won consecutive U.S. Open singles titles in 2000 and 2001 and last month ended a 16-month hiatus from competitive tennis when she entered the Citi Open in Washington. She defeated Peyton Stearns, the world's 35th-ranked women's singles player, 6-3, 6-4, during her opening match in that tournament. Poland's Magdalena Fręch was the tournament's fifth seed and defeated Williams, 6-2, 6-2, but Williams secured a wild card invite to compete in the Cincinnati Open, which started on Aug. 5 and ends on Monday. Spain's Jessica Bouzas Maneiro beat Williams, 6-4, 6-4, on Thursday in the Cincinnati Open. Other U.S. women who earned wild card draws in the U.S. Open are Clervie Ngounoue, Alyssa Ahn, JulietaPareja, Caty McNally and Valerie Gloxman. Pareja, 16, is the world's top-ranked junior, while Ngounoue, 19, is the former top-ranked junior and won her first Women's Tennis Association main draw at the Cincinnati Open. Caroline Garcia of France and Talia Gibson of Australia also received wild-card main draws for the U.S. Open. The main draw wild cards mean Williams and other recipients don't have to play in the U.S. Open's qualifying tournament, which is held from Monday through Aug. 20 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City's Queens borough. Williams has won five Wimbledon titles in addition to her two U.S. Open wins for a total of seven Grand Slam singles titles, plus four Olympic gold medals and one silver medal. She also has won 14 major doubles titles. The U.S. Open news wasn't the only highlight for Williams on Wednesday. Toymaker Mattel on Wednesday also announced it is producing a Venus Williams Barbie Doll as part of its "Inspiring Women Series" dolls. The Williams doll wears a tennis outfit and visor while holding a tennis racket, which is modeled after one of her prior tournament outfits.

49ers star wide receiver could return against the Bucs during regular season
The Bucs secondary is one that was tested time and again in 2024, and they failed the majority of them. Whether it be due to injury or holes in their defense, they were one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL. That is why, when San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk could make his debut in 2025 against the Bucs in Week 6, we took notice. Shanahan told the media, "I always see them around Week 6, which, that could mean Week 10. That could be Week 5. That's the area where I start thinking about it, which is a long ways away. I know it's not Week 1 or anything like that. So it's something I'm not thinking about too much." Aiyuk was coming off a massive contract extension before he tore his ACL in 2024. Before that, his play had earned him his contract by having 294 catches for 4,305 yards and 25 touchdowns. His return could be troublesome for the Bucs, so it will be a storyline we will have to watch as time goes on.
