Circulating variants have mild symptoms, closely monitoring the situation: DG ICMR

New Delhi [India], May 26 (ANI): Covid-19 in India has raised an alarm again, but current infections have mild symptoms with no severity. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has stated that while COVID-19 cases are being reported again in parts of the country, the current variants in circulation are showing mild symptoms similar to the Omicron strain.
Speaking to ANI, Dr Rajiv Bahl, DG, ICMR, said the government is focusing on transmission, surveillance, and preparedness, but currently circulating variants have mild symptoms like Omicron. 'The government and health agencies are closely monitoring COVID-19 cases and taking necessary steps.'
He added, 'Currently, the number of active cases is low, and most cases are limited to southern and western India. The government is focusing on three key factors. The rate of transmission and the rapidly increasing cases. Whether the virus is evading our natural and vaccine-induced immunity. Whether the current infections are more severe than before or have mild symptoms like Omicron.'
He stated that surveillance is ongoing to determine the cause of the recent COVID-19 case surge.
'Surveillance is underway to determine the reasons behind the increase in cases, and the government is making necessary preparations. The four variants that we have found are subvariants of Omicron --- LF.7, XFG, JN.1 and NB. 1.8.1. But more samples are being tested for further information.'
He cautioned against panicking but urged individuals with 'cancer or other immunocompromised' conditions to take caution.
He said, 'For now, there is no need for the public to panic, but the government and agencies are keeping a close watch on the situation. Currently, there is no need for additional precautions for the general public, but individuals with cancer or other immunocompromised conditions should exercise caution.'
Regarding vaccine preparedness, he said, 'The government has developed platforms to create new vaccines. If a new variant emerges in the future, the government has two options. Evaluate the effectiveness of existing vaccines and develop a new vaccine specifically targeting the new variant.'
'The government claims to be prepared and capable of quickly developing vaccines if needed. The situation is currently under control, but the government remains vigilant and is making necessary preparations,' he said. (ANI)

New Delhi [India], June 8 (ANI): Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said that with cleanliness and yoga, the country will move towards realising the dream of 'Viksit Bharat' at a fast pace. Preparations for International Yoga Day 2025 have begun with the launch of a cleanliness campaign on May 27, and daily yoga classes are underway for the grand event on June 21. CM Saini said, 'When Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the idea of Yoga at the United Nations, 177 countries agreed. Today, Yoga, derived from our land, has reached everyone globally. The Prime Minister has worked to spread the message of yoga all over the world.' CM Saini said the International Yoga Day programme in Kurukshetra will be historic and grand. 'Our ancient ideology is included in yoga. Rishis have given us yoga and meditation as a gift. By doing yoga, a man remains healthy,' he added. The Chief Minister addressed a meeting organised with various institutions regarding International Yoga Day in the auditorium of the Multi-Art Cultural Centre, Kurukshetra, on Sunday. The Chief Minister urged the officials of institutions, NGOs, business organisations, and other organisations present at the meeting to contribute to the programme's success. He also asked Patanjali Yog Peeth to spread the message of yoga in every house of the city. The Chief Minister said Swami Ramdev has been spreading yoga in the country and the world. 'The arrival of Baba Ramdev on June 21 in Kurukshetra, the land of Lord Krishna, is a matter of great pride for the people of Kurukshetra,' he added. He said the theme of International Yoga Day this year is 'One Earth, One Health', and the Haryana Government has also added the slogan 'Yoga Yukt, Nasha Mukt'. The Chief Minister said people have started taking medicines to cure minor diseases, whereas those diseases can be easily controlled with yoga. Therefore, we all should adopt yoga. He said if we want to save our youth from addiction, they will have to adopt yoga. The Chief Minister urged the people of Kurukshetra to reach Brahma Sarovar and Mela Ground at 4 am on June 21 to mark their presence in this great 'yagya' of yoga. He said more people should be involved in this campaign, and whoever has been given any responsibility should fulfil it as a priority. He said that, like festivals like Diwali, Holi, and Bhai Dooj, this International Yoga Day should be celebrated similarly. It was informed that the Brahma Sarovar and Mela Ground have been divided into 103 sectors. Out of these, 64 sectors have been made in Brahma Sarovar and 37 sectors in the Mela Ground and surrounding areas. The Chief Minister administered an oath to institutions, NGOs, and other people present in the auditorium to adopt yoga, pranayama, and meditation regularly in life, to avoid addiction, and to inspire others to do the same. He also inspired them to promote yoga in their families, society, and workplace. Former State Minister Subhash Sudha said the International Yoga Day programme on June 21 is a matter of good fortune for the people of Kurukshetra. This programme will be seen all over the world, he claimed. Citizens from every house of the city will participate in this programme. He also demanded that the Chief Minister open a meditation centre in the city. Haryana Yog Aayog Chairman Dr. Jaideep Arya said that on June 21, environmental protection is starting with yoga from Kurukshetra. He said 10 lakh yoga practitioners in the state will sow medicinal plants, and more than 1 lakh people in Kurukshetra will set a world record by doing yoga together. On this occasion, Deputy Commissioner Neha Singh, Superintendent of Police Nitish Agarwal and District Council President Kanwaljit Kaur and other dignitaries were present. (ANI)

6 more deaths tied to Covid take India toll since January to 65
NEW DELHI: Six more Covid-related deaths were reported in the last 24 hours, the Union health ministry said on Sunday. The country's total Covid count has crossed the 6,000-mark, with 769 fresh cases being reported in the last 48 hours, revealed data released by the ministry. Kerala continues to be the most affected state, followed by Gujarat, West Bengal and Delhi. In all, there are 6,133 active Covid cases in the country. With the latest casualties, the Covid death toll since Jan has gone up to 65. Maharashtra has recorded the maximum fatalities (18), followed by Kerala (15) and Delhi (7). Due to the rising number of cases, Centre is conducting mock drills to check facility-level preparedness and has instructed all states to ensure availability of oxygen, isolation beds, ventilators, and essential medicines, official sources said. However, most cases are mild and are being managed under home care, they stressed. A series of technical review meetings were held on June 2 and 3, under the chairpersonship of director general of health services (DGHS) Dr Sunita Sharma, with representatives of Disaster Management Cell, Emergency Management Response Cell, National Centre for Disease Control, Indian Council of Medical Research, Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme, and central govt hospitals in Delhi and with representatives of states and UTs to evaluate the situation and preparedness measures.

Gujarat on second spot with 822 active Covid cases
Ahmedabad: Gujarat was on the second spot in active Covid cases among Indian states as of Sunday morning, according to the dashboard of the ministry of health and family welfare (MoHFW). Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Kerala, with 1,950 cases, had the highest number of active cases, followed by Gujarat at 822, West Bengal at 693, Delhi at 686 and Maharashtra at 595. In total, the number of cases crossed the 6,000 mark, reaching 6,133, with 378 new cases, including 105 from Gujarat. Across India, six Covid deaths were recorded, where some of the comorbidities reported included hypertension, ischemic heart disease, respiratory failure, pneumonia, diabetes and kidney disease. "A majority of Covid patients who are being treated in the hospitals in Ahmedabad have existing health conditions. Covid infection has just added to the symptoms, due to which some are on oxygen support. Severe cases are still rare, and more than 90% of the patients with flu-like symptoms recover within three to five days," said a city-based physician.
