Cal Raleigh and Aaron Judge will be in the spotlight this week for their prolific power but so will the Seattle Mariners' pitching staff.
While Raleigh attempts to add to his major league-leading home run total, the Mariners will try to contain Judge and extend their 29 2/3-inning scoreless streak Tuesday night when they visit the New York Yankees for the opener of a three-game series.
Raleigh's 35 homers matched Hall of Fame member Ken Griffey Jr. (1998) for the most homers in team history before the All-Star break. He is four shy of the major league record set by Barry Bonds with the San Francisco Giants in 2001.
Raleigh hit two homers Friday in a 6-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates and has nine homers in his past 18 games. Those homers were his only hits of the series, with the Mariners posting consecutive 1-0 victories on Saturday and Sunday, and he is 2-for-17 over his past five games.
'We saw him earlier in the year,' Judge said. 'He's a complete hitter. He hits the ball over the park. Being able to be a switch hitter like that and have both your swings on like that, it's impressive. So excited to see him.'
Judge is two behind Raleigh in the home run race. Judge hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning as the Yankees stopped their second six-game losing streak this season with a 6-4 victory over the New York Mets on Sunday.
Judge enters the final six games before the All-Star break on a 17-game on-base streak and is two shy of 350 homers for his career. He has gone deep five times in his past eight games.
Judge's homer Sunday gave the Yankees a 5-0 lead and New York relied on its defense the rest of the way by turning double plays in three straight innings, including one started by left fielder Cody Bellinger in the seventh to protect a two-run lead.
The Yankees entered the week three games out of first place in the American League East after holding a seven-game lead through May 28. Since then, New York is 14-21 in its past 35 games and 7-16 over its past 23.
'You're going to be tested,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. 'You're going to face moments of adversity and where you've got to (deliver), and I think it's all good prep for hopefully when we're playing even more important games later in the year.'
The Yankees' next test involves facing a pitching staff with a 1.83 ERA in its past six games. Seattle has not allowed a run since Carlos Vargas gave up a two-run single to Vinnie Pasquantino in the seventh inning of Thursday's 3-2 loss to the Kansas City Royals.
Seattle is coming off a third straight shutout as George Kirby allowed four hits in 6 1/3 innings and combined with three relievers on a five-hitter Sunday against the Pirates.
'I think we're all hitting our stride a little bit,' Kirby said. 'Just have to keep going six, seven, eight innings.'
Right-hander Logan Gilbert (2-2, 3.40 ERA) opens the series for the Mariners. Gilbert allowed one run on three hits in 4 2/3 innings Wednesday against the Royals.
Gilbert was on the injured list when the Mariners hosted the Yankees in May and is 2-2 with a 6.54 ERA in six career starts against New York.
Rookie Will Warren (5-4, 5.02), who allowed eight runs on 10 hits in four innings during an 11-9 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, starts for New York.
Warren took a no-decision in Seattle on May 14 when he allowed two runs on four hits in five innings.

Liberty looking for consecutive wins with visit from Dream

(Photo credit: Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images) The reigning champion New York Liberty have not won consecutive games since they started this season 9-0. Since that great start, they are just 4-6. The Liberty will get another shot at a winning streak on Sunday afternoon when they host the Atlanta Dream. New York is coming off an 87-78 win over visiting Las Vegas on Tuesday night. The Liberty got great performances from Sabrina Ionescu, Breanna Stewart and Leonie Fiebich. Ionescu had game highs in points (28) and assists (eight). Stewart had 15 points, seven rebounds and five assists. And Fiebich, who had 15 points, had game highs in rebounds (nine) and blocks (three). Kennedy Burke added 10 points and a game-high six steals. 'We were really active (on defense),' Ionescu said. 'We upped the intensity.' The Liberty won despite having three players out with injuries: Jonquel Jones (ankle), Natasha Cloud (hip) and Isabelle Harrison (knee). For the season, Stewart is fourth in the league in scoring (19.6), and Ionescu ranks fifth (19.4). Ionescu also ranks second in made 3-pointers per game (2.6). New York and Atlanta have split two games against each other this season, with each team winning on its home court. The Dream, who finished 15-25 last season, are much improved so far this season at 12-8. Allisha Gray is a big reason for Atlanta's rise. The fourth overall pick in the 2017 draft, Gray was traded by Dallas to the Dream in January of 2023. Since that deal, Gray has become a three-time All-Star. This year, Gray is having her best season, averaging 18.7 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists while making 41.6 percent of her 3-pointers. She was named an All-Star Game starter -- the first Dream player to earn that honor since 2018. And recently named her the favorite to earn the WNBA's Most Improved Player award. Gray, though, was held to six points on Friday in a 99-82 loss at Indiana. 'They were staying attached to her, making her work,' Dream coach Karl Smesko said of the defense on Gray. 'They were double-teaming her.' A highly regarded offensive coach from his days at Florida Gulf Coast, Smesko has made a difference. Last year, the Dream were last in the league in scoring. This year, they are third. Rhyne Howard ranks second on the Dream with 16.5 points per game. Brionna Jones (13.6), Jordin Canada (10.5) and Brittney Griner (10.0) are also scoring in double figures.

Raptors Summer League takeaways: The kids are alright

Forgotten man Jonathan Mogbo kept momentum up from strong regular season finish. Create Account Yes, it came at Las Vegas Summer League Friday night and, sure, only two locks to be in head coach Darko Rajakovic's rotation (Jamal Shead and Ja'Kobe Walter) suited up and it needs to be noted that opponent Chicago was nowhere close to a real NBA outfit, but that was one heck of a start. Even the news just prior to tip-off that prized rookie Collin Murray-Boyles would be held out due to a left adductor strain couldn't spoil the day for the summer Raptors. The group looked hungry, aggressive but still measured enough to keep the fouling under control and simply overwhelmed the hapless Bulls, who turned the ball over 33 times. Here are some takeaways: • Maybe hold off on assuming Jonathan Mogbo's minutes will be replaced by Murray-Boyles and others. The 31st pick a year ago was arguably the best player on the court. Not only did he hit all but one of his eight shot attempts (though none were of the three-point variety, something Mogbo needs to change), but he also was as good as anyone defensively. When Chicago's most talented player, Matas Buzelis, tried to make things happen, Mogbo was there to say absolutely not repeatedly. It was impressive stuff. Mogbo is one of them, but if he keeps playing like this, Rajakovic might have to find a spot for him. Keep in mind that Mogbo flashed his potential late in the season with one triple-double in April, another game where he was a point shy of a triple double, another where he had eight points, rebounds and assists and one where he was three assists short. Meaningless games or not, it isn't easy to consistently fill the boxscore like that and offence isn't even what will get Mogbo on an NBA court. • Despite only being around for 31 years, the Raptors arguably boast the most impressive history of elite slam dunkers in league history. Vince Carter is widely regarded as the best dunker of all-time, Tracy McGrady, Terrence Ross and DeMar DeRozan were also nearly as good as it gets and Norman Powell and Kawhi Leonard had some historic jams too with the team in the playoffs. Hardcore Raptors fans remember the likes of Keon Clark, Sonny Weems, Fred Jones and Jamario Moon as well. We feel confident adding Alijah Martin to the list after one appearance. This year's 39th pick threw down an absolutely silly one-handed cradle jam in the second quarter that probably will be the best dunk of Summer League this year. Taking only two power dribbles after crossing half-court, the former NCAA champion with Florida gathered and rose for a tomahawk. This advertisement has not loaded yet, but your article continues below. Martin later tried even to one-up himself though he couldn't complete that dunk attempt. It cannot be fun for opposing guards to have to go up against both Martin and Shead, a pair of take-no-prisoners defenders who live to take their targets off their game. • Canadian A.J. Lawson can get buckets. He had some huge games for the Raptors down the stretch and led the team Friday with 22, hitting 4-of-8 three-point attempts. On a team lacking shooters and scorers will there be a role for Lawson? His contract isn't guaranteed but surely an NBA team could use him. • Ulrich Chomche is still raw, but his first game in five months showcased that he's taken some steps forward, despite the knee injury he suffered with Raptors 905. He's a defensive menace near the rim with ridiculous length and a quick second jump and things seemed to have slowed down at least a little bit for him on offence, but he's much better at making the right reads defensively than offensively at this point. We'll be tracking him closely the rest of the Vegas slate. • Walter is being asked to do a bit more offensively in Vegas. Handle the ball, try to create for himself and others, things that should benefit him as his career progresses. It wasn't the best night for him, aside from a few interesting flashes, but right now it's all about more in-game repetitions for the promising Baylor product. • Toronto returns to the court Sunday against Orlando.
