Chef's secret: I've found the most underrated restaurant in Sydney - and it's hidden inside a tennis club

Daily Maila day ago
He's the powerhouse behind Sydney icons The Apollo, Cho Cho San and Olympus Dining, but now top chef Oscar Solomon has dished out his best intel yet.
In a recent TikTok interview with foodie account Secondz, Oscar revealed his ultimate picks for where to eat in Sydney.
From unmissable roast chicken to the best coffee and the pub giving five-star restaurants a run for their money, the list reads like a secret local bible.
But one unexpected answer truly stopped everyone in their tracks, especially the interviewer, and it's a hidden Portuguese restaurant inside a Marrickville tennis club.
'Casa Do Benfica, a Portuguese restaurant in Marrickville tennis club,' Oscar answered in the clip when asked for his most underrated gem in Sydney.
'It's like the best blend of true European food, but then like an Australian bar that has Resch's on tap.'
The unsuspecting recommendation is located on Centennial Street in Sydney's inner west and has an old-school community vibe.
'It's just excellent,' he added.
However, the praise for Casa do Benfica isn't new in the industry, with Timothy from Olympic Meats also raving about the venue.
'If people keep reccing' it, it's not going to stay underrated,' Oscar warned.
What was once a hidden gem among locals is fast becoming the place for long Sunday lunches and laidback Euro-style dinners, with prices far friendlier than your average fine diner.
The restaurant serves hearty portions of grilled Portuguese chicken, chargrilled seafood, beef espetadas, and crisp vinho verde in a fuss-free setting where tennis whites are welcome but definitely not required.
In the same interview, Oscar dropped a lineup of Sydney's best-kept food secrets, which are basically a hit list for your next long weekend.
His top pick is legendary Bondi institution Sean's Panorama, where the roast chicken reigns supreme.
'Sean's Panorama – every day of the week,' he said.
'No one comes close, it's just true hospitality.'
'Single O, Surry Hills,' he added when asked to name the best Sydney café.
'I think they have the best selection of coffee. It's really efficient.'
Oscar's best pub recommendation was the cosy Dry Dock Hotel in Balmain.
'Everything a pub should be. The food is spectacular, like so, so good. The drinks service is amazing, no one is getting close to it,' he said.
And for a cheap and cheerful treat, he said to not go past Mogu Mogu Onigiri Community in Surry Hills.
'It's so, so good. They also do really good iced tea and amazing onigiri all made fresh. Crispy seaweed, crispy everything.'
For a 'good time' he listed Steki Taverna in Newtown.
'Classic Greek taverna, one of the oldest in Sydney. Traditional Greek music, loud music, live bands, amazingly good food, great atmosphere. Big hangover the next day.'
So, whether you're chasing the city's crispiest seaweed snack, a no-fuss roast chook with ocean views, or a plate of flame-grilled espetadas hidden behind a tennis court, Oscar's off-duty dining guide is a gift to Sydney's food scene.
With a list this good, it's only a matter of time before the city's best-kept secrets become everyone's new go-to spots - so you might want to get in before the lines do.

The main talking points as British and Irish Lions target Australia whitewash

The British and Irish Lions are aiming to complete a series whitewash of Australia when the rivals clash for the final time at Accor Stadium on Saturday. Here the PA news agency examines five talking points heading into the Sydney showdown. Lions target clean sweep Andy Farrell's tourists enhanced their reputations by showing they have the character to match their quality after emerging from a desperately tight second Test with a series victory. Now they are determined to take their place in the Lions pantheon by ending their Australia expedition with a 100 per cent record. No Lions team have won every Test since the 1927 visit to Argentina, while the 1974 'Invincibles' who took on South Africa were the last side to complete an unbeaten tour. Final Test but full throttle The series may already have been won, but no mercy is being shown to Australia in selection. Rather than rotating in fresh legs to reward deserving squad members who just missed the cut, the established 23 have been retained with the hard grafting James Ryan and unpredictable Blair Kinghorn the only new starters. The selection for the Sydney Olympic Park clash reflects how much the Lions value the clean sweep and by Saturday night only 27 players will have been used in the Tests. Leading the pride Farrell has been reluctant to say if he wanted to take charge of the next Lions tour to New Zealand in 2029, but after masterminding Australia's demise with a game to spare, the job would be his to turn down. Apart from the success on the field, the Ireland boss has created a harmonious squad environment and is revered by his players and coaching staff. When the tourists talk about a united squad effort, they mean it. 'I just love everything that the Lions is about' said Farrell on Thursday and there is no better champion for the institution described by manager Ieuan Evans as a 'glorious anachronism'. Among the greats Tadhg Furlong reaches a special milestone on Saturday by making his ninth successive start for the Lions, becoming only the seventh player to do so but the first in the professional era. For three consecutive tours the remarkable Ireland tighthead prop has acted as the cornerstone of the scrum, as well proving his quality in every other department of the game. Adding to the achievement is that he has kept his place in the Lions' front row despite his season being ravaged by calf and hamstring injuries. When he returns home, it will be as a Lions great. The Wallabies' last stand Australia shot down critics questioning their place among the Lions' tour destinations by going within 51 seconds of winning a captivating second Test. It was the performance needed from the Wallabies to validate the tour but the question now is how much they have left in the tank after rising to the occasion so manfully in Melbourne. Star forward Rob Valetini has been ruled out by his calf problem, but offsetting that major blow is that Will Skelton is able to continue in the second row despite his recent calf injury. The Wallabies are underdogs, but avoiding a whitewash is all the motivation they need to cause an upset.

See the evidence Channel Seven is robbing stars of the spotlight so it can promote its own presenters on camera

Channel 7 have been ruthlessly exposed by a footy content creator who noticed how much the free-to-air network place focus on their presenters on camera rather than who is being interviewed. Former sports journalist Josh Garlepp made the observation on the popular Kick It Forward podcast - leaving co-hosts Harry Fitzgerald and Giorgio Savini in disbelief. '(They) Channel 7 are notorious for pushing their own talent rather than the person they are interviewing,' Garlepp began. Garleep then provides a telling example from an interview featuring Hamish McLachlan with former Geelong captain Tom Harley. When the pair chat on-camera, McLachlan dominates the screen time, with the current Swans CEO barely featuring. At one stage, McLachlan appears on camera for a staggering 35 seconds. The development saw Fitzgerald label the vision 'a joke', before asking was Garlepp 'taking the p***.' Footy fans were also shocked at what they witnessed. One of Garlepp's co-hosts Harry Fitzgerald (pictured) couldn't believe how much McLachlan dominated the screen time in the interview featuring the current Sydney Swans CEO 'Who needs Media Watch,' one supporter posted in response, referring to the long-standing show on the ABC. 'Producer to the video editor: 'Please add piano music like someone died in a Hallmark movie,' quipped another. 'Great pick up! Noticed this as well,' said a third. Former sports reporter and ex-professional basketball player Garlepp worked at Fox Sports, the ABC and The West Australian before starting his comedy podcast. Garlepp first delved into podcasting following a 2020 redundancy from Fox Footy. He eventually moved to Melbourne where AFL is front and centre, and also performs comedy shows on stage when time permits.

Iconic Channel Nine star set to make a sensational return to the Logies after boycotting the awards 16 years ago and THAT hotel room mishap

An iconic Channel Nine star will make a shock return to the Logies red carpet at The Star in Sydney on Sunday, 16 years after boycotting the awards show. Tracy Grimshaw, 65, has spent years sneaking into TV's night-of-nights through the kitchen after she was voted worst dressed in 2009. But now, her A Current Affair replacement Allison Langdon confirmed on The Kyle & Jackie O Show on Friday morning that Tracy will step out on the red carpet this year. Apart from making a brief appearance on the carpet in 2018, the journalist has stayed true to her guns and kept out of the limelight of the Logies. Tracy was burned by the impromptu fashion show in 2009 when she stepped out in a purple, diamante encrusted dress which was promptly critiqued in the media. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the Daily Mail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. She revealed in 2018 she had 'loved' her outfit, which was pulled together by a Melbourne stylist, and 'felt so bad' seeing it land in a worst dressed list at the time. 'I don't pretend to be the best dressed anywhere and I just decided if this is what the red carpet is, I'm not doing it anymore,' she told Mamamia. Tracy did make a brief return to the red carpet in 2018 when she was nominated for the Gold Logie, but ultimately lost it to Grant Denyer. Now it seems Tracy will take another shot at walking the red carpet this year, though her 2009 debacle was not the only Logies mishap she has suffered. The media personality had a drunken mishap at the 1998 Logie Awards when she ended up naked and locked out of her Crowns Casino hotel room. With just a newspaper to protect her modesty, Tracy said she had stripped off to take a shower after a boozy night and confused her bathroom door with the front door. During a segment on The Today Show in 2018, the TV personality said it was 'all James Packer's fault' after the pair shared 'ten tequilas' at an after party. 'We had drunk Tequila... We had about ten and it was three in the morning,' she told hosts Karl Stefanovic, Georgie Gardner and Silvia Jeffreys. Tracy said because she'd covered her naked body with a copy of The Australian newspaper, the publication sent her a special commemorative plaque. 'The Australian sent me the framed front cover of The Australian with a little plaque saying, "To Tracy, from The Australian, the newspaper that covers all your needs."' 'I've got it on the wall in my office, it's been with me since,' she said. The TV Week Logie Awards, which are determined by public vote, will take place on Sunday, August 3 at The Star in Sydney and are broadcast live on Seven.
