Bruce Dickinson on What's Next for His ‘Watchmen-Type' Music/Comic Book Project: ‘I'm Aiming High Here'

He's an iconic heavy metal singer, both with Iron Maiden and on his own. He's a commercially licensed pilot whose air exploits are documented on film (2009's Iron Maiden: Flight 666). He's hosted award-winning radio shows, published books and graphic novels, and been part of beer brands. But Bruce Dickinson is nonplussed when all of these accomplishments are placed before him. More from Billboard Iron Maiden 50th Anniversary Documentary To Feature Rare Footage, New Animated Sequences with Mascot Eddie Kid Rock Goes 'Nutz' Over California Gov. Gavin Newsom's Fake Endorsement Poster Jack White Rips Donald Trump's 'Vulgar, Gold-Leafed and Gaudy' White House Makeover, Comparing it To 'Wrestler's Dressing Room' 'Yeah, it kinda crept up on me,' Dickinson tells Billboard via Zoom from France. This Friday (Aug. 22), he kicks off a North American tour in Anaheim, Calif., supporting 2024's The Mandrake Project and following this year's More Balls to Picasso, a fresh reimagining of Dickinson's second solo album, Balls to Picasso, which came out in 1994. 'When I did Mandrake I looked back at all this stuff I've done and I went, 'I'm actually proud of all this stuff. It's really good!'' he continues with a laugh. 'I tend to discount stuff that I've done once I've done it. I don't revisit it. Maiden's the same way. The artist in me wants to move on, move on, move on and keep pushing, but sometimes it's just nice to sit back, roll in it all and go, 'This is really cool.' It's great to discover I'm a fan of the stuff I did — isn't that weird?'' The Mandrake Project, Dickinson's first solo outing in 19 years, is a continuing conceptual fantasy piece that's allowed Dickinson to combine a few of his creative ambitions. In addition to the music — 10 songs on the album, all by Dickinson and six with producer Roy Z — it's slated to be a 12-volume comic book series, written by Dickinson with Tony Lee for Z2 comics, illustrated by Staz Johnson. The first four issues are out and have been packaged together, with the other eight in progress and another album of Mandrake-inspired music set to start recording early next year. 'Mandrake, the story, is constantly unfolding and constantly teaching me things about writing,' Dickinson explains. 'Episodes five, six and seven are scripted and we're in the middle of the artwork for that now, getting those done. It's a long process. It's a really fascinating process as well. It's not like a book. It's not like a film. It really is a complete hybrid art form. So I'm aiming high here; the holy grail in all this is sort of the Watchmen-type comic. And if I even get halfway there, I'll be very happy.' Dickinson took Mandrake to the stage last year, mostly in Europe, between legs of Iron Maiden's successful The Future Past World Tour. He plans to add more of the album's songs into the North American shows (as well as a side trip to The Town festival on Sept. 7 in Sao Paulo), mixing them with songs from his other solo albums and perhaps something from the Maiden catalog (he included part of 'Alexandar the Great' in Europe). He's been working on some fresh visuals, too, and promises a re-set of the stage from what he did before. 'We have a reasonably varied repertoire,' Dickinson says, 'because the band is so flexible, and because it's not like a Maiden tour where we're locked into that set with the show and the lights and everything. With this (solo tour) we can vary it. We can say, 'Hey, what do we fancy doing tonight? Let's do this one as an encore' and so on. It's fun. It's nice to have the flexibility of being a little bit random.' More Mandrake music to accompany future volumes of the comic is in motion as well, according to Dickinson, who plans to take his touring band into the studio during January with producer Brendan Duffey, who also worked on More Balls to Picasso. 'In April we convened and had a massive, collective brain dump in the studio and came up with 18 song demos, maybe two or three that are connected to (Mandrake),' he says. 'Now we're refining the demos.' Writing for Mandrake, he explains, is like 'having a conversation in your head with a thing you've already written. In a way you're interviewing the character you've created by saying, 'Why are you like this? Tell me about yourself, and I'm gonna write a song about you.' Very interesting.' A Mandrake movie might seem like a logical future project as well, but Dickinson cautions fans not to hold their breath. 'I'm not even gonna think about that,' he explains. 'I'm involved in writing the story and getting it to episode 12 and a conclusion. At that point we can sit back and look and everything. I think a lot of people rush into (a film). It's a huge commitment making a film or a TV series. So I want to finish the story the way I want it before anybody else tries to get their hands on it.' He also laughs out loud at the notion of a Mandrake stage musical before offering a firm 'no.' Dickinson is also ready to continue Maiden's Run For Your Lives World Tour, which ran through Europe this summer and featured Simon Dawson, bassist Steve Harris' bandmate in British Lion, taking the place of the retired Nicko McBrain. More concerts will be taking place during 2026, though dates have not yet been announced, and Dickinson is looking forward to continuing his creative juggle. 'This new tour of ours, which will be coming Stateside, is the most incredible thing we've ever done, and people will be blown away by it,' he says. 'This tour has been revelatory, really, in how much fun we're having on stage. It's evident in everybody's playing, and, for what it's worth, all the reviews and things are off the charts. You can never make everybody happy, but by and large, it's doing great. We can only guess how great it's doing in people's hearts and minds from the reactions we get every night, which are amazing.' Ghana's Godwin Asediba wins the 2025 BBC Komla Dumor Award

Ghanaian journalist Godwin Asediba has won the 2025 BBC News Komla Dumor Award. The investigative reporter, filmmaker and news anchor, who is the 10th recipient of the accolade, works with TV3 and 3FM in Ghana. His stories have also appeared on several international broadcasters. The 29-year-old often focuses on human-interest stories aiming to expose injustice and amplify the voices of marginalised communities. The award, now a decade old, was created to honour Dumor, a Ghanaian journalist and presenter for BBC World News, who died suddenly aged 41 in 2014. He had worked tirelessly to bring a more nuanced narrative of Africa to the world, representing a confident, savvy and entrepreneurial side. How Komla Dumor became the face of Africa WATCH: Komla Dumor's unique presenting style "Komla's legacy reminds us that African stories deserve to be told with depth, dignity and a fearless commitment to truth," Asediba said. Winning the award was not just a "personal milestone" for the Ghanaian but also "a call to carry forward the spirit of journalism that informs, inspires and transforms". The award judges said they were impressed by Asediba's investigative work and his unwavering belief in journalistic integrity. One story that he was particularly proud of was his investigation into one of Ghana's largest mortuaries that had been neglected, creating a public health risk. Asediba is now set to travel to London where he will spend three months working with BBC News teams across television, radio and online. He will also receive training and be mentored by leading BBC journalists. "Over the past decade, the Komla Dumor Award has helped nurture some of Africa's most talented journalists. It's been a privilege to watch them grow and make a lasting impact, both at the BBC and beyond," the BBC's regional director for Africa Juliet Njeri said. "This 10th anniversary stands as a powerful testament to Komla Dumor's enduring legacy: his passion for bold, authentic storytelling and championing African voices lives on." As part of the placement, Asediba will travel to a country in Africa to report on a story that will be broadcast to the BBC's global audiences. Previous award recipients are Rukia Bulle, Paa Kwesi Asare, Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya, Victoria Rubadiri, Solomon Serwanjja, Waihiga Mwaura, Amina Yuguda, Didi Akinyelure and Nancy Kacungira, the inaugural winner. Last year, Bulle travelled to Senegal to report on the Baye Fall - a Muslim subgroup whose striking appearance makes them stand out. She digs deeper: Nomalanga Shozi explores the role of a ‘female zama zama' in BET's Black Gold

Black Gold is the new BET show that dives into the world of illegal mining. Nomalanga Shozi believes the series is unique in its portrayal of a woman zama zama. She stars alongside Dawn Thandeka King and Sello Maake kaNcube and calls it an 'incredible experience'. Nomalanga Shozi is back to shake up South Africa's screens with a new lead role. The actress, presenter and media personality has snagged the lead role of Amandla Zungu in the new BET daily drama Black Gold, diving into the high-stakes world of illegal mining. Set in the heart of KwaZulu-Natal's rich terrain, Nomalanga's character Amandla is a principled and headstrong woman forced into the world of illegal mining after a tragedy changes the trajectory of her life forever. Catching her in between shooting explosive scenes on the Black Gold set, Nomalanga takes a few minutes to chat with TRUELOVE on her new role. Exploring the world of a woman zama zama Nomalanga tells us what resonates the most with her about playing Amandla Zungu on Black Gold. 'I think a story of unbecoming to become is really what resonated with me. And I think it just came at the perfect time in my life as well, where I had gone through just enough life experience to understand how to portray all of those feelings and all of those emotions because I think also life experience is our greatest teacher. 'So yeah, I think the story of somebody going through a phase of having to shed an identity that they had attached themselves to for so long and then become something completely new, that's what resonated the most with me and excited me about it,' she shares. What portraying Amandla on Black Gold has taught Nomalanga is that the only constant in life is change, and that 'The quicker we embrace change is the quicker we learn and grow,' she remarks. Black Gold explores themes of feuding family, betrayal and lust, themes that audiences are all too familiar with from popular telenovelas. But Nomalanga believes that what sets the series apart from other local shows is its focus on a woman navigating the world of zama zamas or illegal mining. She explains, 'I think it sets itself apart in the fact that it's the first story we've ever seen or been told, or watched of the first female zama zama basically. 'How a woman could navigate that world, who she would have to be, how she would morph her way into becoming this very dangerous, scary, determined, courageous, brave person. So, I think that definitely is the one thing that sets it apart from most.' Sharing the stage with industry greats Nomalanga acts alongside industry veterans like Dawn Thandeka King, who plays her fearsome matriarch Florence Zungu, and Sello Maake kaNcube as Tom Motspe, a mining magnate caught in forbidden love and haunted by his deadly past. This powerhouse cast reflecting the theme of feuding families that Mzansi has come to love is also what distinguishes itself from other telenovelas on air. View this post on Instagram A post shared by BET Africa (@bet_africa) On sharing the stage with these acting greats, Nomalanga says, 'It has been the most incredible experience of my life, I can't even begin to describe to you. I mean, yes, the role is super challenging and obviously having such a big story is also really, really challenging just as a creative, but just having such a supportive web and network of seasoned cast and actors and actresses just to draw inspiration from or to go to for when I needed inspiration, when I need a different way to tackle a scene or handle emotion. 'All of those things to me are just such a blessing and it's not lost on me how unique this opportunity is. And the fact that it's also just a once in a lifetime, yeah, it really, really is. 'I mean, I grew up watching ubab' Sello and now I get to act alongside him and it's just so beautiful, it really, really is. It feels like I'm just learning from the best, and I'm just so grateful, man. It's such an amazing opportunity ... Can you imagine? You walk on the set and it's Archie Moroka,' she laughs.
