My brother worked with Aamir Khan, his career got shattered: Acquitted Dhawade's kin

Pune based lawyer Nita Dhawade, whose brother Rakesh was also arrested in Malegaon bomb blast 2008 case and later discharged in 2018, said she was extremely happy about the acquittal of all other accused. Nita said the bomb blast probe hampered the life of her brother, an expert in traditional arms and armoury, who had worked with actor Aamir Khan. 'His arrest shattered his career,' she said. Nita had provided legal help to Rakesh and other accused in this case. Passionate about antique weapons, Rakesh Dhawade gained fame after he was associated as an arms consultant with the Aamir Khan movie Mangal Pandey: The Rising released in 2005. But in November 2008, the Maharashtra ATS had arrested Dhawade for his alleged role in the Malegaon bomb blast that year. He was then booked and investigated for the Parbhani bomb blast of 2003, Jalna and Purna bomb blasts of 2004 and the Nanded blast case of 2006. Different investigation agencies had claimed the involvement of Hindutva activists in these five bomb blast cases and alleged that Dhawade was the 'mastermind' behind it. But, the courts initially acquitted Dhawade in the Jalna and Parbhani blasts cases. He was then discharged in the Purna blast case by the court. After having spent about ten years in jail, Dhawade was released in 2018 after being discharged in the Malegaon bomb blast 2008 case as well. While in prison, he continued his research. With the court's permission, he wrote multiple books, comprising about 25,000 papers, 36,000 short notes and 8,000 drawings on different aspects of historical arms and armaments, in jail. In February 2024, his booklet Shivakalin Shastrastre: Alpa Parichay (Introduction to Arms, Armaments during the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj) was published by the Shri Shivaji Raigad Smarak Mandal, a prestigious organisation founded by Lokmanya Tilak in 1895. While Rakesh was not available for comment on Thursday, his sister Nita said that in January this year, he was acquitted of all charges in the Nanded blast case of 2006. Dhawade has an Arms Act case pending against him in a Pune court. His lawyer Sangram Kolhatkar said they have faith in the law and are sure of getting justice in this case too. Malegaon blast acquittals: ‘Army has always supported me,' says Lt Col Purohit; Major Ramesh Upadhyay (retd) thanks Bal Thackeray

Lieutenant Colonel Prasad Purohit, one of the seven Malegaon blast accused who were acquitted on Thursday, thanked the judiciary as well as his lawyers, including Harish Salve and Mukul Rohatgi, who he said appeared for him in the case without taking any fee. Speaking to The Indian Express on the phone from Mumbai, Lt Col Purohit said, 'I am choosing not to talk specifics about the past 17 years and the case. But I want to say that I am thankful to the judiciary and to all my lawyers. 'All the lawyers fought pro bono for me, including the young lawyers. I am grateful to my lawyers, including late advocate Shrikant Shivade, Sadanand Phadke, senior counsel Harish Salve and Mukul Rohatgi, and my young lawyers Viral Babar and Yasir Khan. They have put in their blood and sweat in this,' he said. An National Investigation Agency special court on Thursday acquitted Lt Col Purohit, BJP leader and former MP Pragya Singh Thakur, Major Ramesh Upadhyay (retired), Sameer Kulkarni, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, and Sudhakar Dhar Dwivedi in the case related to the September 29, 2008, blast that killed six people and injured 100 in Malegaon. The court held that the prosecution failed to provide cogent and reliable evidence and to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Lt Col Purohit further said, 'When wrong people rise to the position of power, national institutions get contaminated. Then the nation suffers, people like us suffer, and the common man suffers. And healthy organisations like the Army also suffer. When we suffer, the adversary gets the benefit…' 'I am extremely grateful to my motherland for having given me the opportunity to serve her. And now I am extremely grateful to the judiciary because I will again be able to serve my nation as a free man and an Army officer. I am also a believer in service beyond my service in uniform. So whenever I retire, I will keep serving my motherland,' he added. 'The Army has always supported me. Right from sepoys to generals, everyone has extended their affection, love and care to me. I never got a feeling that I was not being looked after. The Intelligence Corps and my parent regiment, Maratha Light Infantry, have taken care of me like a child in the family.' His wife Aparna Purohit told The Indian Express, 'I can only say that I am relieved. I guess I will take some more time to gather my thoughts.' Lt Col Purohit has been posted with an Army formation in Mumbai since he was granted bail by the Supreme Court in the case in 2017. When the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorist Squad arrested him after the blast, Lt Col Purohit was stationed at Pachmarhi in Madhya Pradesh, undergoing training in the Arabic language at the Army Education Corps Training College and Centre. He was then attached to a liaison unit of the Army's Military Intelligence. Major Ramesh Upadhyay (retired), the other acquitted Malegaon blast accused with an Army background, thanked the late Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray, besides his lawyers. 'I am grateful to my lawyers and all those who supported me in the difficult times. Balasaheb Thackeray stood by us. All allegations against me are proved false,' said Upadhyay, 73, while speaking to The Indian Express. Now residing in Pune, Upadhyay is a native of Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh. The ATS arrested him in the case in 2008, and he got bail in 2017. Upadhyay contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 in Ballia as an independent candidate. Earlier, he contested the UP Assembly elections from Bairia in Ballia district on a Hindu Mahasabha ticket in 2012 with permission from the court. In 2020, he joined the Janta Dal (United), headed by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The JD (U) then appointed Upadhyay as the state convener for its ex-servicemen cell in UP. 'I have left politics now. I would spend my life in social work,' he said on Thursday. Sameer Kulkarni, a Hindutva activist from Pune, said he lost valuable years of his life after being arrested in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case, but was happy that finally justice had been delivered after the special NIA court acquitted him in the case. He had been out on bail since 2019. Kulkarni was a resident of the Pimpri-Chinchwad area. He was known to be a member of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad in the past. Investigators alleged that he was an active member of the secretive Abhinav Bharat outfit and was involved in the bomb blast conspiracy. But, in a press conference in Pune in April 2019, Kulkarni claimed that he had heard about the Malegaon blasts only after the ATS detained him. He further claimed that then ATS chief Hemant Karkare believed he was innocent and would have removed his name from the case, but was killed in the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai.

Walkie-talkies, not cell phones: How robbers tried to evade detection but were still caught by police

When Pimpri Chinchwad police launched a probe after a elderly businessman was robbed at gunpoint at his residence by armed assailants who had tied and gagged him, one detail stood out—there was an unusual absence of mobile activity. After analysing CCTV footage across a staggering 1,200 kilometres upto Rajasthan to arrest the suspects, they finally uncovered the reason—the robbers had used walkie-talkies to communicate with each other. The 76-year-old businessman was robbed at gunpoint at his residence in Nigdi Pradhikaran by armed assailants who had stormed the house on the night of July 19 before tying and gagging him. They had also locked his domestic help's family in the outhouse and fled with gold ornaments and valuables worth over Rs 6 lakh. An FIR was registered at Nigdi police station by the victim Chandrabhan Chhoteram Agarwal, a resident of Nigdi Pradhikaran, following which the Nigdi police and Pimpri Chinchwad police's crime branch launched a joint probe. As part of the initial probe, the investigation teams scanned through over 200 CCTV cameras in the area. The first breakthrough came in when the police team zeroed in one particular car and ascertained that it belonged to the suspects. The police team then traced the route taken by the car for 1,200 kilometers to Jaipur in Rajasthan. On July 24, the police team arrested the first suspect identified as Suresh Laduram Dhaka (29), a notorious criminal with 21 prior cases including attempted murder and armed robberies in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Dhaka was arrested from Shyamnagar in Jaipur. From him, the police recovered jewellery of the victim's wife, her Aadhaar card, the victim's wallet along with four walkie talkie sets. 'When we launched a probe, there was an unusual absence of cell phone activity from the location. We solved that puzzle when we recovered the walkie talkies from the suspect. They had been using walkie talkies among themselves to avoid getting detected,' said an officer who is part of the probe. Subsequent to leads obtained from Dhaka, the police team zeroed in on another suspect—Mahipal Ramlal Bishnoi (19), a native of Jodhpur but currently working at Vadgaon Maval in Pune district. Bishnoi was arrested on July 27 from Talegaon area of Pune. Police have launched a manhunt for four more suspects including a woman, who has been identified as part of the investigation.
