Myint Swe, president under Myanmar's junta, dies, state broadcaster reports
The 74-year-old former general died in hospital on Thursday morning, state-run MRTV said.
He became nominal president after the incumbent Win Myint was arrested during the coup alongside Nobel laureate and de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi. They have been detained ever since.
Myanmar has been in chaos since the coup plunged the Southeast Asian nation into civil war, with the military fighting to contain a rebellion and accused of widespread atrocities, which it denies.
Myint Swe had served as vice president under Myanmar's quasi-civilian system before becoming the figurehead president.
The junta had depended on him to sign its decrees and provide a veneer of legitimacy to its rule. He was placed on medical leave in July last year, with his duties passed to junta chief and armed forces commander Min Aung Hlaing.
Last week, the military nominally transferred power to a civilian-led interim government ahead of a planned election later this year, with the military chief remaining in charge of the war-torn country in his other role as acting president.

SINGAPORE: A Singapore Armed Forces regular serviceman has died after he was found unconscious at Hendon Camp swimming pool, said the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) in a news release on Saturday (Aug 9). He was discovered at 7.15am on Saturday, and appeared to have been training on his own, added Mindef. "CPR and AED were administered immediately. The Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force were activated, and the serviceman was evacuated to Changi General Hospital via SCDF ambulance," the release read. "Resuscitation continued on route and upon arrival at Changi General Hospital. Despite resuscitation efforts, he was pronounced dead at 7.44am. "The Ministry of Defence and the SAF extend their deepest condolences to the family of the late serviceman." Mindef said it is providing assistance to the family.

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Friday (Aug 8) that he had "a very good" conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which they discussed Ukraine and ways to strengthen bilateral ties. The call came as Modi, leader of the world's most populous nation and its fifth-largest economy, faces difficult decisions over New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil. US President Donald Trump has given India, one of the world's largest crude oil importers, three weeks to find alternative suppliers or face new import tariffs of 50 per cent, up from the current 25 per cent. "Had a very good and detailed conversation with my friend President Putin. I thanked him for sharing the latest developments on Ukraine," Modi posted on social media. "I look forward to hosting President Putin in India later this year." OIL IMPORTS UNDER PRESSURE Buying Russian oil has saved India billions of dollars on import costs, keeping domestic fuel prices relatively stable, but that benefit is now under threat because of Trump's tariffs. The oil purchases are a key source of revenue for Moscow's war in Ukraine. Russia is also one of India's top arms suppliers, and the warm ties between the two countries date back to the Soviet era. Putin last visited India in December 2021. The Kremlin has criticised calls to "force countries to sever trading relations" with Russia as "illegitimate", without directly mentioning Trump. Putin also met India's national security adviser Ajit Doval in Moscow on Thursday, but no details were provided about their discussions. PEACEFUL RESOLUTION Ukraine's Western allies have sought to cut Russia's export earnings since Moscow launched its military assault in February 2022. However, Russia has been able to redirect energy sales away from Europe to countries including India and China. India has argued it began importing more oil from Russia because traditional supplies were diverted to Europe after the conflict began. TRADE TENSIONS WITH WASHINGTON The Indian leader, facing major political and economic consequences at home and abroad from Washington's tariff measures, has not spoken directly about Trump. However, he said on Thursday that "India will never compromise" on the interests of its farmers. Families of Air India crash victims demand release of flight recorders
AHMEDABAD, India: Families of victims of June's deadly Air India crash demanded on Friday (Aug 8) the immediate release of the aircraft's two flight recorders, saying delays were eroding their trust in the investigation. A total of 241 people on board the London-bound Boeing 787 Dreamliner were killed when the plane crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad in western India on Jun 12. Another 19 people were killed on the ground. A preliminary report by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau said fuel to the jet's engines was cut off moments before impact. The report did not reach any conclusions or assign blame, but indicated that based on the cockpit voice recording, one pilot asked the other why he had cut off fuel. The second pilot replied that he had not. CALL FOR BLACK BOX RELEASE "We are formally demanding the immediate release of the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder – the black box," said Imtiaz Ali Sayed, a family member of several victims. "These devices contain vital information that can reveal the truth behind this horrific tragedy," he said in a media statement. Sayed, whose younger brother, sister-in-law and two children were killed in the crash, said he was speaking on behalf of 60 families "who share the same pain and unanswered questions". "Every day without answers deepens the pain of our loss and erodes public trust in aviation safety," he said. POTENTIAL LEGAL ACTION Some families are considering legal action against Air India and Boeing, the US manufacturer of the aircraft, their lawyer said. Mike Andrews of the US-based Beasley Allen Law Firm, representing 65 families from India and Britain, met relatives in Vadodara city, south of Ahmedabad, on Friday after visiting the crash site. "Suppose the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder indicate that there is a defect with the aircraft... in that case, the options are to bring a defective product or a product liability claim in the United States for those claims," Andrews told reporters.
