Special Olympics: Pak athletes get a boost
A special ceremony was held at the Bank Al Falah head office on Thursday to extend the best wishes to Pakistan's athletes ahead of the Special Olympics World Winter Games 2025 in Turin, Italy.
Bank Alfalah partnered with Special Olympics Pakistan (SOP), a non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities through year-round sports training and competitions.
The SOP will be sending the athletes to the winter games for the third time. Previously, the country competed in 2013 and 2017.
Ronak Lakhani, Chairperson and Board Member of Special Olympics Pakistan, expressed her enthusiasm for the 10 athletes: "This partnership is a game-changer in our mission to empower athletes with intellectual disabilities across Pakistan. By expanding our reach and creating more opportunities, we are supporting these athletes, breaking barriers, and redefining inclusion in sports. I do not doubt that these 10 extraordinary athletes will make Pakistan proud globally, inspiring countless others with their determination and resilience."
The Special Olympics World Winter Games Turin 2025 is a major international sporting event scheduled from March 8 to March 15, 2025, in Turin, Italy, with the motto, "The Future is Here", reflecting its commitment to showcasing the abilities and achievements of athletes with intellectual disabilities, promoting inclusion and unity through sports.
This event will unite over 500 athletes from 102 countries, competing across eight winter sports disciplines. It will include eight disciplines: Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, dance sport, figure skating, floorball, short-track speed skating, snowboarding, and snowshoeing. The athletes from Pakistan will be participating in Alpine Skiing and snowshoeing. Over the period of two years, the bank funded a PKR 9 million training program through this collaboration, benefiting 500 athletes.
This collaboration supports SOP's objectives by engaging over 500 special and mainstream athletes through regular sports programming, organising live-in training camps for selected athletes, and developing a 50-coach and technical staff network.
"Bank Alfalah believes in the power of sports to transform lives and build a more progressive and inclusive society," said Atif Bajwa, President and CEO of Bank Alfalah.

Dar was paid double fee during HBL PSL9
The PCB audit report has raised concerns over umpire Aleem Dar receiving double the standard match fee during PSL 9, as he was paid $4,000 per match instead of the set $2,000. According to details in the report, Aleem Dar received an additional payment of approximately 3.85 million PKR under match fee expenditures. The note sheet labeled "PCB-DCOP-24-1848 – Payments for Match Officials, PSL 9, 2024" reveals that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) appointed several umpires and match referees for PSL 9 fixtures. As per PCB regulations, the match fee for an umpire on the ICC International Panel is $2,000 per match. However, Aleem Dar was paid $4,000 per match, which was double the official rate. This increased payment was approved by previous Chairman of the Management Committee. The audit report states that this resulted in an additional financial burden of $14,000 on the PCB, 15 million PKR were allocated from the Chairman's contingency fund. In total, Aleem Dar received $28,000 as match official fees during PSL 9, in line with the ICC Elite Panel rate of $4,000 per match. However, at the time of PSL 9, Aleem Dar was not part of the ICC Elite Panel. He was on the PCB's International Panel, meaning his designated fee should have been $2,000 per match. This led to an excess payment of $14,000 (around 3.85 million PKR) which, according to the audit, was beyond his entitlement. The auditors concluded that this excessive payment not only gave undue benefit to the recipient but also caused financial loss to the PCB and the franchises. In response, the PCB management explained that Aleem Dar, being part of the PCB International Panel, had requested to be paid at the ICC Elite Panel rate, and that this request was approved by the Chairman at the time. The report states that this response indicates the management acknowledged the audit's observation.

Naqvi arrives in Dhaka for ACC meeting
Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Bangladesh on Wednesday to chair the Asian Cricket Council's (ACC) Annual General Meeting. The high-level meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday in Dhaka. Upon his arrival at the airport, Naqvi, who currently serves as President of the ACC, was warmly received by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan. According to sources, the ACC will host a formal dinner in Dhaka later today in honour of the officials and dignitaries attending the event. Meanwhile, the fate of the Asia Cup cricket tournament, scheduled for September, is set to be decided during a crucial Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting in Dhaka. However, the tournament faces uncertainty as political tensions and internal lobbying threaten its execution. According to sources, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is allegedly making concerted efforts to derail the event, a move that could cost the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over PKR 1.25 billion in revenue. These developments are also being seen as an attempt to undermine Mohsin Naqvi, PCB Chairman and current President of the ACC. Reports suggest that India, along with Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, has aligned against the decision to hold the ACC meeting in Dhaka. Under ACC rules, a quorum for such meetings requires the participation of at least three full Test-playing member nations and at least ten full or associate members. With key boards refusing to travel or even attend via video link, the quorum may not be met, rendering the meeting legally invalid. India, despite being the official host of the Asia Cup, has objected to Dhaka as the venue for this meeting. The BCCI has not confirmed whether it will attend the meeting in person or virtually, casting further doubt on the finalisation of the tournament's schedule and host nation.

Azhar Mahmood's contract poses major challenge for PCB
Azhar Mahmood's contract has become a major hurdle for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), as terminating him before the end of the agreement would require paying him six months' salary. As a result, he has been appointed interim head coach of the Test team. According to details, Azhar Mahmood was recently appointed by PCB as the interim coach of the red-ball (Test) team. The official press release had stated that he would continue until the completion of his contract. However, sources indicate that the situation is more complicated than it appears. Reportedly, PCB's white ball head coach, Mike Hesson, had outright refused to include Azhar Mahmood in his coaching setup. Sources close to Azhar claim that during the tenures of Gary Kirsten and Jason Gillespie, he was told to continue grooming himself as an assistant coach with the promise of becoming head coach later. When that did not happen, Azhar became disappointed. At one point, he was informally told by an official that he would be given the Test team responsibility, but when no formal announcement was made, he grew concerned and even considered legal options. The main issue for PCB is a contract signed by the previous administration with Azhar Mahmood, which stipulates that early termination would require payment of six months' salary. Azhar had even offered to work with the U19 team, but that proposal was rejected. His salary is paid in US dollars, which translates to around PKR 7.5 million per month, making him one of the most expensive coaches in Pakistan's cricket history. To reduce expenses, PCB recently let go of several mentors — including WaqarYounis and SaqlainMushtaq — who were each earning around PKR 5 million monthly. However, removing Azhar before his contract expires would cost PCB tens of millions of rupees. His contract is set to end in March or April 2025, during which he will likely remain with the Test side for only two series: one against South Africa in October-November, and the other against Bangladesh in March-April. Sources also revealed that Director of High Performance, Aaqib Javed, is not impressed with Azhar's coaching and has openly voiced his concerns in meetings. It is also possible that a permanent Test coach may be appointed even during Azhar's interim tenure.
