‘Desperate' Hong Kong fencer Ryan Choi almost abandoned season before Shanghai glory
Hong Kong fencer Ryan Choi Chun-yin has targeted further success on the back of his breakthrough triumph at the weekend – but revealed he almost skipped the event after a wretched run of results left him ready to write off the year.
Foilist Choi outsmarted former world champion Tommaso Marini 15-12 in the Shanghai Grand Prix on Sunday to win his first senior individual international title.
Choi's maiden win almost did not happen as the left-hander revealed he thought about skipping the rest of the season after missing out on the main draw of the World Cup in Vancouver earlier this month, adding to the disappointment of not qualifying for the Paris Olympic Games last July.
However, coach Maurizio Zomparelli managed to talk him out of the idea.

'I didn't play well in any tournament after failing to qualify for Paris – it was not regression on my part but a case of results not reflecting my improvement,' said Choi, who saw his latest rankings climb 15 spots to world No 17. 'I was desperate and wanted to bring the curtain down on the season.
'I didn't lose because of any technical issues but some external factors that discouraged me, but coach [Zamparelli] persuaded me to go on.'

'The past two times the horse was still coming up to full fitness – he wasn't 100 per cent. This time he is still not 100 per cent but he has improved.' Little Paradise was hit with a nine-point ratings rise for his last-start win and will carry 124lb on Class Three debut. 'He's a nice horse and after his past two races, the horse is still improving. He gets a better draw this time and he will have his chance to win again,' said Ting of Little Paradise, who tackles the likes of fellow hat-trick seeker Moduleconstruction, another exciting three-year-old in Ahren, Lifeline Express and Romantic Son this weekend. Victorious for the fourth time at Happy Valley in April, the 90-rated Glory Elite was set to contest Wednesday night's Class Two at the city circuit, however he will now be rehabbed with an eye to returning during the 2025-26 season. 'It's not too bad, hopefully he can recover,' said Ting. The weekend's Sha Tin meeting marks the return of twilight racing in the city, with Sunday the first of seven fixtures to kick off at 4pm due to the hot weather.

Soul Rush back at the races for the first time since humbling Romantic Warrior

Photo: Kenneth Chan Two months after humbling Romantic Warrior in the Group One Dubai Turf (1,800m), Soul Rush headlines the 75th running of the Group One Yasuda Kinen (1,600m) at Tokyo Racecourse on Sunday, contesting the prestigious contest for the fourth time. Third behind Romantic Warrior in last year's Yasuda Kinen, Soul Rush has posted two wins, two seconds and a third from his past five races and looks like he is improving with age. The seven-year-old son of Rulership will be ridden by Suguru Hamanaka. The 36-year-old jockey breezed the horse over 1,200m on May 29 in a time of 1 minute 21.5 seconds with a final 200m of 10.5 seconds. On June 4, under a trainer's assistant, Soul Rush worked solo up the Ritto hill course over 800m, switching gears to extend powerfully over the final 200m. His overall time over the slightly heavy going was 52.3 seconds with a final 200m of 11.8 seconds. 'He was pretty much ready last week,' trainer Yasutoshi Ikee said. Hong Kong defender says team need better chemistry for crunch India Asian Cup qualifier
Yue Tze-nam has said Hong Kong needed to 'improve our chemistry' in time for their vital AFC Asian Cup qualifier against India at Kai Tak Stadium on Tuesday. Supporter dissent towards Ashley Westwood following Thursday's 0-0 friendly draw with Nepal distracted from a performance low on quality and imagination in the final third. The city team have not scored in successive matches, following a sequence of 19 goals in five games. The otherwise impressive Yue blew one of Hong Kong's few clear-cut chances against the Nepalese, when he directed a 10-yard effort wildly off target. 'We didn't play as well as we can in the first half, or do enough to break through Nepal,' Yue said. 'For India, we need to improve our chemistry, and we need to be physically stronger.' The spotlight on Westwood's rift with fans also drew some attention away from Yue's return for a first start under the English head coach. A right-back by trade, he was pushed forward to fill the attacking role vacated by the injured Everton Camargo. 'I needed time to get used to it, but it was no problem – I will play wherever the coach puts me,' Yue said.
