Egypt's Al Ahly earn record-extending 45th league title

Straits Times4 days ago

Cairo - Al Ahly clinched a record-extending 45th Egyptian Premier League title with a 6-0 rout of Pharco after Wesam Abou Ali scored four goals in their final game on Wednesday.
Abou Ali also provided the assist for the fifth goal, scored by Hussein Elshahat, with Imam Ashour wrapping up the win in added time as Al Ahly earned a third consecutive league crown.
The win brings Al Ahly's tally to 58 points, two ahead of their closest rivals Pyramids.
Local media reported that Pyramids have gone to the Court of Arbitration for Sport demanding three points to be deducted from the champions for failing to show up for a match against arch-rivals Zamalek.
The Egyptian Professional Football Club Association had punished Al Ahly with a three-point deduction for not playing the match in March – after the club's request for foreign officials was turned down – but backed down after the Cairo-based club complained to the local Olympic Committee. REUTERS

Svitolina saves match points to beat Paolini and reach French Open quarters

Tennis - French Open - Roland Garros, Paris, France - June 1, 2025 Ukraine's Elina Svitolina in action during her fourth round match against Italy's Jasmine Paolini, as empty seats are seen in the stands REUTERS/Denis Balibouse PARIS - A determined Elina Svitolina battled from the brink of defeat to overcome last year's runner-up Jasmine Paolini 4-6 7-6(6) 6-1 and reach the French Open quarter-finals after a thoroughly entertaining battle on Sunday. Victory came the hard way for Svitolina, who saved three match points in the second set to force a decider. She raised her level from there to earn a last-eight encounter with either 12th seed Elena Rybakina or defending champion Iga Swiatek. "I still can't believe this match finished my way, my head is still in it, in a big battle," said 30-year-old Ukrainian Svitolina, who shed tears of joy after the win. "Jasmine was playing really well and it was really tough. In the end, I'm happy I could stay composed and fight till the very end. Here I am in the next round. "I had to be aggressive, stay focused on my gameplan and take small opportunities to win the second set. It was one or two points that decided it and I'm pleased I could win it. In the third set I played really well to close the match." Fourth-seeded Paolini twice swapped breaks with Svitolina before holding to love in the ninth game of the match and pouncing to claim the opening set with a scorching forehand winner in the next game. The diminutive Italian grabbed a 3-1 lead in the second set but 13th seed Svitolina did not let her challenge fade on Court Philippe Chatrier as she recovered two breaks and saved two match points to make it 5-5 before forcing a tiebreak. The 29-year-old Paolini responded bravely after going 4-1 down and wasted another match point as Svitolina went on to level the contest and pump her fists to loud cheers, before using the momentum to get her nose in front in the decider. Svitolina pulled away by winning four games in a row before her opponent got on the board and she promptly completed the victory with a searing backhand winner to reach the quarter-finals of Roland Garros for a fifth time. Deschamps will find PSG's France players in strange state after party, Dembele says

FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - Champions League - Final - Paris St Germain v Inter Milan - Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany - May 31, 2025 Paris St Germain's Ousmane Dembele with the trophy after collecting his winners medal REUTERS/Peter Cziborra/File Photo Deschamps will find PSG's France players in strange state after party, Dembele says MUNICH - France coach Didier Deschamps will find some of his players in a strange state when they return from Paris St Germain's weekend celebrations, forward Ousmane Dembele said following the club's first Champions League triumph. PSG crushed Inter Milan 5-0 in the final in Munich on Saturday, recording the biggest winning margin in the showpiece match of the continent's premier club competition. France players, including PSG's Lucas Hernandez, Warren Zaire-Emery, Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue and Dembele, are due to rejoin the national squad at Clairefontaine from Monday to prepare for Thursday's Nations League semi-final against Spain. "There you go, we've made a whole nation, a whole city proud. And, like they say, the party is just getting started. Didier is going to find us in a strange state," the 28-year-old joked during an interview on French television channel M6. The France international described the festivities as a long-awaited release after years of heartbreak. PSG's previous Champions League final appearance was in 2020, when they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Bayern Munich. "It's exceptional, what just happened. Winning finals is great, but doing it in this way is even better, it's even more thrilling," said Dembele. "Honestly, we deserve it. After so many years of hardship and battles, I think Paris St Germain truly deserves this victory." There has been rejoicing in Paris as fans await the team's arrival on Sunday but Dembele urged supporters to keep the festivities peaceful. More than 500 people were arrested by police and two people were reported dead during wild celebrations in France. Humiliated Inter were never in the game with PSG, say Italian papers

Humiliated Inter were never in the game with PSG, say Italian papers MUNICH, Germany - Inter Milan fans will be in no rush to read Sunday's Italian newspapers which all tell the tale of their team's humiliating defeat at the hands of Paris St Germain in Saturday's Champions League final in Munich. A 5-0 thrashing, a record defeat in a final of Europe's premier club competition, left no room for argument as Luis Enrique's side completely outclassed Simone Inzaghi's team from start to finish. "Inter Humiliated" was the verdict on the front page of the Corriere della Sera, which added that Inter were never in the match in a "final without a story" after PSG went two goals up after 20 minutes. The Gazzetta dello Sport went with the simple but effective "Not Like This", which accurately described the nature of Inter's performance in a final where the team which clearly wanted it more went on to earn a convincing win. It also mentioned how Inter were never in the game, and inside the paper were headlines such as "Inter Overwhelmed" and "Inter Humiliated". In the Gazzetta's player ratings, PSG's Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma received the lowest score of his team for the simple fact that 'If they had played without a keeper, PSG would have won anyway'. While Luis Enrique was given a 10 for planning the perfect match, Inzaghi received a three for what it said was his complete lack of understanding of PSG's game and the "almost embarrassing choice of substitutions". Inter had hoped to go one better than their 1-0 defeat by Manchester City in Istanbul two years ago, but instead suffered the type of loss which will take even longer to recover from. As for PSG, after a season in which they won every trophy they competed for, their real ambition had always been winning the Champions League and in Munich they did that in style. In France, L'Equipe carried a headline which no PSG fan will disagree with, "This is Paradise", but for Inter the headlines all speak of a hellish night in Munich as the Italians ended the season without a trophy to show for their efforts. Inter also finished runners-up to Napoli in Serie A as they lost their title by a point. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
