Tyrann Mathieu shuts down rumor that the Saints may release him: '504 forever'
Sportskeeda's Tony Pauline wrote an article centered around the things he heard during Day 6 of the NFL Scouting Combine. Pauline wrapped up his article with one sentence: "Finally, I'm told the New Orleans Saints are considering releasing 32-year-old safety Tyrann Mathieu, who has one year left on his deal with the club."
That's all Pauline wrote on the topic, no elaboration on why the Saints could make this decision. It was enough to spark conversation, possibly because Mathieu's future has been questioned by fans this offseason. As a veteran player in a situation with a new head coach, it would make some sense if there were conversations around the future of the team's older players. But Mathieu's contract is laid out to where it would cost more money to cut him than to keep him. Using a post-June 1 designation wouldn't help the Saints get under the salary cap.
In the words of Public Enemy, "don't believe the hype." Mathieu came to social media to the same night and seemingly responded to the report indirectly. He called Sunday a "slow news day" before asserting his eternal allegiance to the city of New Orleans.
The New Orleans native has stated before his intent is to finish his career in his hometown. That hasn't stopped the rumors or trade hypotheticals from flying around. From the sound of Mathieu's post, at the worst, no one has approached him about his future.

This 87-yard TD from Drew Brees to Brandin Cooks is the Saints Play of the Day

This 87-yard TD from Drew Brees to Brandin Cooks is the Saints Play of the Day Drew Brees threw for 465 yards and still almost lost We're continuing to count down the days remaining until the New Orleans Saints kick off their 2025 season with Day 87, which makes this 87-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees to Brandin Cooks our choice for the Saints Play of the Day. Every yard and point gained on the play ended up counting in a last-second win against the Carolina Panthers. Sure, things got off to a good start. The Saints offense banged out 21 unanswered points to take a quick lead, including this great pass from Brees to Cooks down the sideline (which you can see here). Cam Newton threw an interception to Sterling Moore in the New Orleans end zone in response. Then things got goofy. Carolina orchestrated five scoring drives of 50-plus yards each and put the Saints defense on its heels; they kept up a frenzied pace and scored 21 points of their own in the fourth quarter to close the gap. It took a 52-yard field goal from Wil Lutz with just 11 seconds left in regulation to break the 38-38 tie and put the game away. That was the way games went for the Saints in the mid-2010's. Brees threw for 465 yards and four scores, with Cooks accounting for 173 of those yards, and New Orleans still nearly lost at home. This was Dennis Allen's first year as the full-time defensive coordinator after Rob Ryan was ousted midway through the 2015 season, and they still had a lot of work to do on that side of the ball. Things would eventually settle down and even turn into a strength, defensively, but in the meantime New Orleans needed every deep shot from Brees to Cooks they could connect.

Marshon Lattimore wants to prove himself to Commanders

The Commanders advanced to the NFC Championship Game last season, but it wasn't because their midseason trade for cornerback Marshon Lattimore was a home run. Lattimore was dealing with a hamstring injury when he was acquired from the Saints and was inactive for four games before making his Washington debut. He was back on the injured list after two games and missed the final two weeks of the regular season before returning for the playoffs. When Lattimore was in the lineup, he didn't play as well as he has in the past and that's left him with a clear goal for the 2025 season. Lattimore is healthy after the extended break and said on Wednesday that he wants to 'prove that they made the right decision' by trading for him. 'Just the burst,' Lattimore said, via the team's website. 'Just getting all my breaks. I was dealing with a hamstring, and that takes a lot out of you. It takes a long time to heal. I was just trying to battle through that, but now, since I got a full offseason, I feel explosive.' Getting the Lattimore of old in the secondary this season would be a case of better late than never for the Commanders and it would make them a tougher team to throw against this time around.

Gayle Benson: 'To Our Knowledge' Fair Grounds 'Is Not For Sale' originally appeared on Paulick Report. After news broke Tuesday that Churchill Downs, Inc. had sent a letter to the Louisiana State Racing Commission revealing its plan to 'begin the next steps' to relinquish its live racing license, several names were bandied about the public sphere as potential buyers for the Fair Grounds Racetrack in New Orleans. According to among the names suggested was Gayle Benson. Benson is a prominent Thoroughbred owner via her G M B Racing, as well as the owner of the New Orleans Saints NFL team and Pelicans NBA team. Advertisement Benson issued a public statement via Saints and Pelicans executive Greg Bensel: 'With the recent news generated by Churchill Downs concerning their continued racing at Fair Grounds, we have had numerous calls regarding our interest in purchasing the Fair Grounds. Mrs. Benson continues to support the horse racing industry not only in Kentucky but more importantly here in Louisiana. "She has always maintained a great relationship with the leadership at Churchill Downs and certainly has been monitoring this situation at the Fair Grounds. Her hope is that horse racing continues in New Orleans at the Fair Grounds and is prosperous and sustainable. "It is an important and iconic industry that we cannot lose. To our knowledge, which is very limited relative to the operations of the Fair Grounds, it is not for sale. Our focus is on Saints minicamp and the upcoming NBA Draft.'
