2025 Saints roster has more LSU Tigers than players from any other college program

2025 Saints roster has more LSU Tigers than players from any other college program Tennessee has the second-most alumni in New Orleans So much for the narrative that says the New Orleans Saints overlook players in their own backyard. It felt like decades went by without any star talent going down the river from Baton Rouge to New Orleans -- but these days there are more LSU Tigers on the Saints' roster than players coming from anywhere else. And they're playing some pretty big roles between Tyrann Mathieu and Davon Godchaux, both projected starters on defense, with fiery tight end Foster Moreau and veteran running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire competing for snaps offensively. The Saints brought back offensive lineman Will Clapp this spring, too, who has some experience playing in Kellen Moore's offense. But where else have the Saints looked to draw talent from? Whether it's in the annual NFL draft or signing veteran free agents, they've gone from coast to coast and even beyond the United States searching for help. Here's the full breakdown, (not counting Irish kicker Charlie Smyth, who joined the Saints through the International Pathway Program): 5 - LSU 4 - Tennessee 3 - Fresno State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon State, Texas 2 - Alabama, Boston College, Louisville, Northern Iowa, Oregon, SMU, South Carolina, South Dakota State, TCU, Vanderbilt, Virginia, Weber State, Wyoming 1 - Appalachian State, Arizona State, Arkansas, Arkansas State, Boise State, BYU, California, Clemson, Colorado State, Delaware, Duke, Eastern Kentucky, Fort Hays State, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Marshall, Michigan, Middle Tennessee State, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Nebraska, North Dakota State, Oklahoma, Old Dominion, Pittsburg State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers, Stanford, Syracuse, Texas A&M, UCLA, Utah, UTSA, Wake Forest, Washington, Western Illinois, Wisconsin, Yale If you're curious about how this shakes out by conference, we've got you covered (again, not counting Smyth): 23 - SEC 15 - ACC 12 - Big Ten 8 - Big 12 7 - Mountain West 6 - Missouri Valley (FCS) 4 - Sun Belt 3 - Independents, Pac-12 2 - Big Sky (FCS), MIAA (Division II) 1 - AAC, Coastal (FCS), Conference USA, Ivy League (FCS), United (FCS) So that's 58 of 90 players coming from the "Power Four" conferences with 11 from the FCS level and two players coming out of Division II schools (Nathan Shepherd from Fort Hays State and Rico Payton from Pittsburg State, both in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Conference). These numbers going to change as the roster is churned over the summer, but we'll continue to keep track of them as the Saints work to build the best version of their team.

6 Day 2 prospects to know for Arizona Cardinals

6 Day 2 prospects to know for Arizona Cardinals PFF shared their favorite Day 2 prospects at every position. These six players are worth paying attention to for the Cardinals. Often the focus of the NFL draft is on the players team select in the first round. Those should be the best players. But the Arizona Cardinals have had some Day 2 successes over the years — safety Tyrann Mathieu, running back David Johnson, linebacker Markus Golden, safety Budda Baker, cornerback Garrett Williams, tight end Trey McBride and others. The Cardinals have picks in the second and third rounds and there are some solid players to choose from. PFF highlighted their favorite players at each position as Day 2 prospects. Some of these players are worth knowing for the Cardinals. Iowa State WR Jaylin Noel A receiver on Day 2 would not be out of the question for the Cardinals, and Noel, despite not meeting the 6-foot minimum it seems the Cardinals have for any new receiver they bring in, he is fast, athletic and a playmaker. He has a 41.5-inch vertical leap to go with 4.39-second speed in the 40, so the 5-10 frame is mitigated. Ohio State G Donovan Jackson If the Cardinals don't draft a tackle in the first round, Jackson in Round 2 is a perfect fit. He was a high-level guard and proved he can hang at tackle, finishing the season as the Buckeyes' starting left tackle after Josh Simmons' knee injury. And he his position coach was Justin Frye, now the Cardinals' O-line coach. Minnesota T Aireontae Ersery New Cardinals defensive line coach Winston DeLattiboudere will know him as he coached Minnesota's defensive line last year. Ersery could end up selected in the first round with his 6-foot-6 and 331-pound frame and his athleticism. Michigan EDGE Josaiah Stewart Stewart is undersized at 6-foot-1 and 249 pounds but he had 14 sacks and 21 tackles for loss in two seasons for Michigan. He led all prospects with a PFF overall grade (93.7) and pass-rush win rate (41.2%) on true pass sets. UCLA LB Carson Schwesinger The Cardinals certainly could use youth at linebacker and a long-term answer. He is 6-foot-2 and 242 pounds with explosiveness (39.5-inch vertical leap). He led the nation with 90 solo tackles. He had 136 total tackles last season, nine tackles for loss, four sacks and two interceptions. East Carolina CB Shavon Revel He is coming off a torn ACL, so the Cardinals could do what they did with Garrett Williams, who was drafted in the third round coming off a torn ACL. Opposing quarterbacks tested Revel's coverage 43 times in 2023 but completed just 19 of them for 250 yards and one score. He picked off just one pass but dropped four other potential picks and broke up 11 passes for an impressive forced incompletion percentage of 25.6%. Justin Reid agrees to sign with Saints

The Saints worked out a new contract with Tyrann Mathieu on Tuesday and then moved on to adding another safety to their defense. According to multiple reports, they have agreed to terms with Justin Reid. It is a three-year deal for Reid and it is worth $31.5 million with $22.25 million in guaranteed money. It will be a homecoming of sorts for Reid as he grew up in Louisiana before heading to Stanford for college. Reid helped the Chiefs to three Super Bowls in his three seasons with the team and capped his time in Kansas City with 87 tackles, two interceptions, and nine passes defensed in the 2024 regular season. He had 19 tackles in a playoff run that culminated in a loss to the Eagles in the stadium that Reid will now call home.

Tyrann Mathieu shuts down rumor that the Saints may release him: '504 forever'

Tyrann Mathieu shuts down rumor that the Saints may release him: '504 forever' Sportskeeda's Tony Pauline wrote an article centered around the things he heard during Day 6 of the NFL Scouting Combine. Pauline wrapped up his article with one sentence: "Finally, I'm told the New Orleans Saints are considering releasing 32-year-old safety Tyrann Mathieu, who has one year left on his deal with the club." That's all Pauline wrote on the topic, no elaboration on why the Saints could make this decision. It was enough to spark conversation, possibly because Mathieu's future has been questioned by fans this offseason. As a veteran player in a situation with a new head coach, it would make some sense if there were conversations around the future of the team's older players. But Mathieu's contract is laid out to where it would cost more money to cut him than to keep him. Using a post-June 1 designation wouldn't help the Saints get under the salary cap. In the words of Public Enemy, "don't believe the hype." Mathieu came to social media to the same night and seemingly responded to the report indirectly. He called Sunday a "slow news day" before asserting his eternal allegiance to the city of New Orleans. The New Orleans native has stated before his intent is to finish his career in his hometown. That hasn't stopped the rumors or trade hypotheticals from flying around. From the sound of Mathieu's post, at the worst, no one has approached him about his future.
