Chicago Gourmet Returns With a Sports-Centric Events Lineup

Eater25-07-2025
Chicago Gourmet, the annual food festival in Millennium Park that showcases local chefs and restaurants, returns this fall with a jam-packed lineup of events. The culinary celebration runs from Thursday, September 25, to Sunday, September 28, at the Harris Theater Rooftop, and tickets are on sale now.
This year's Chicago Gourmet theme is 'Step Up to the Plate,' a nod to the food and sports worlds. The weekend's biggest attraction, Grand Cru, will go down across two sessions on Saturday, September 27, and feature dishes from a star-studded cast of chefs — Bailey Sullivan (Monteverde), Jenner Tomaska (Esmé, the Alston), Rob Levitt (the Publican), Gene Kato (Momotaro), and many more — paired with fine wines and spirits. Oenophiles can also attend Somm Sessions on Friday, September 26, at Adalina, where top Chicago sommeliers will pair wines with songs to accompany dishes.
Another returning favorite is Tacos & Tequila on Thursday, September 25. Hosted by Rick Bayless, the event highlights tacos from local chefs like Diana Dávila (Mi Tocaya Antojería) and Carlos Gaytán (Tzuco), agave spirits and cocktails, and traditional music and dancing. The popular Hamburger Hop, a competition between 14 chefs to see who can make the best burger, happens the night of Friday, September 26. Some of the names battling it out will be Joe Fontelera (Boonie's), former Chicago Bears player Israel Idonije and Stephen Gillanders (the Staley), and Jose Sosa (the Greggory). After the Hop, the festivities will continue at the Asian Late Night Market at Tao Chicago. This new event, hosted by Haisous chef Thai Dang, offers Asian bites and specialty cocktails from Henry Cai (3LP), Bo Fowler (BiXi Beer), and more.
Those who love to brunch can check out Rise & Shine Gourmet on Sunday, September 28. The daytime bash brings together a collection of talents who will serve sweet and savory plates to go along with cocktails and live music. Participating chefs include Dominique Leach (Lexington Betty Smokehouse), Devon Quinn (Eden), Paul Fehribach (Big Jones), and Aaron Cuschieri (the Dearborn).
Also new this year is a series of Culinary World Series events throughout the city leading up to Chicago Gourmet. Centered on the 'Step Up to the Plate' theme, these activations feature bites delivered with a side of sports. Cubs and White Sox fans can root for their team at Game Day Gourmet on Friday, July 25. Held in a private suite at Rate Field, the evening will offer the opportunity to watch the Crosstown Classic in style while enjoying ballpark fare, cocktails, wine, beer, and the 'Duck Inn Dog Showdown,' which challenges chefs to put their spins on the classic hot dog.
Other events include a Gourmet Tailgate at Utopian Tailgate on Sunday, September 14, a chef pickleball tournament at SPF Chicago on Saturday, September 20, and a special dinner honoring Jackie Robinson with James Beard Award winners Erick Williams and Damarr Brown at Virtue. The full list of Culinary World Series experiences is available here. Tickets to all Chicago Gourmet events are on sale now via the official website.

Magic Moments maker ties up with Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan to launch premium tequila

By Chandini Monnappa and Hritam Mukherjee (Reuters) -Radico Khaitan, the maker of "Magic Moments" vodka, will invest up to $4.56 million and team up with Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan and Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath to launch a premium tequila brand, marking its foray into the category. The Indian liquor maker, known for premium offerings such as Rampur Indian Single Malt and Jaisalmer Indian Craft Gin, will roll out the brand D'YAVOL Añejo — a premium spirit made from agave and aged about two years in wine casks. D'YAVOL, a luxury brand founded in 2022 by Shah Rukh Khan's son Aryan Khan, along with Leti Blagoeva and Bunty Singh, is headquartered in Amsterdam and offers vodka, blended malt Scotch whisky and premium streetwear. D'YAVOL Añejo is set to launch by December and depending on state excise duty, will be priced between 20,000 rupees ($228.21) and 30,000 rupees, Radico Khaitan Managing Director Abhishek Khaitan told Reuters on Tuesday. The launch comes as affluent Indians increasingly splurge on everything from luxury dining to premium alcohol, housing and cars. Alcohol sales in the country, according to data from analytics firm Crisil, are projected to grow as much as 10% to $61.35 billion in fiscal 2026. Tequila is one of the fastest growing segments globally and India is catching on very fast. The market size in the country is about 300,000 cases, out of which 15% is the Añejo (Spanish word meaning 'aged') category, Khaitan said. "We believe that in the next five years, tequila can reach a volume of about a million cases in India plus global market, so I think it was a great opportunity," he said. Under the partnership, Radico Khaitan and Shah Rukh Khan's family will each hold a 47.5% stake in the venture, while Kamath will own 5%. The deal also underscores the fierce competition in mass and premium liquor segments. Just three weeks ago, peer Tilaknagar Industries bought the "Imperial Blue" whisky brand from Pernod Ricard for $486 million. Leonardo DiCaprio suffers embarrassment as he's stopped and searched by police who don't recognize him

Leonardo DiCaprio ditched his usual face covering while partying in Ibiza, but he still wasn't recognized by police. The 50-year-old actor and his friends were seen being held up by cops before entering a tequila party in a video obtained by the Daily Mail. DiCaprio, wearing an all-black outfit with his signature baseball cap and a chain, looked at his phone as he waited for his turn to be searched. A woman in the background could be heard saying, ''They are searching me full-on right now.' It's unknown if the woman speaking is DiCaprio's girlfriend, 27-year-old model Vittoria Ceretti, who was with him in Ibiza. However, an insider exclusively told Page Six that the A-lister wasn't singled out by police. 'Every single person was patted down, and ID'd,' the source said, adding that there were many notable people at the party. The Spanish cops just didn't initially recognize DiCaprio. 'It's funny, they did a double take and then he went in!' the source continued. Travis Scott was denied entry into the exclusive party held at a private villa by Patron and Spanish actor and singer Aron Piper, the Daily Mail reports, but other celebs that made it in included Kendall Jenner and DiCaprio's best friend Tobey Maguire. DiCaprio is a fixture in Ibiza and has vacationed in the country multiple times over the years. Earlier this month, he and Ceretti were photographed going on Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's mega yacht on the Spanish island. The couple also attended Bezos and Sánchez's wedding in Venice, Italy, in June. Ceretti revealed she had a wardrobe malfunction during the festivities, tearing her vintage Dolce & Gabbana dress. DiCaprio has been linked to the Italian-born model since summer 2023. But she's said that she doesn't like being known as the 'Titanic' star's girlfriend. 'As soon as you're in a relationship with someone who has a larger following than you, you become 'girlfriend of' — or 'boyfriend of,' for that matter,' she told Vogue France in March. 'And that can be extremely annoying.' 'Suddenly, people are talking about you as so-and-so's girlfriend who was so-and-so's ex,' she continued. 'So it's not nice to think that you can't love whoever you want, because of the labels people need to stick on you.' Solve the daily Crossword

Lewis Hamilton Just Launched a New Non-Alcoholic 'Mezcal'

The rapidly expanding world of NA spirits just got a little bigger: Seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton launched his second collaboration with Casa Lumbre Spirits, an mezcal alternative called Almave Humo. This release joins the greater Almave family, which also includes two booze-free tequila alternatives that are made from real agave. Casa Lumbre Spirits was founded by master distiller Iván Saldaña, and includes brands like Abasolo Whiskey, Contraluz (cristalino mezcal), Alma Finca liqueur, and The Lost Irish blended Irish whiskey. Saldaña worked with Hamilton to create Almave, which—according to the brand—is made using the same production steps that are used to create tequila and mezcal. Another NA 'tequila' brand that launched recently is NeQuila, which says it does not use any additives for flavor or mouthfeel. Almave, on the other hand, does contain some additives, like glycerol, agave syrup, apple cider vinegar, and French oak hydrolate, but the spirit is produced from real Blue Weber agave. Combined Heather and Terry Dubrow's Beverly Hills Home Just Sold for $16.5 Million In the case of Almave Humo, the spirit is made from Espadin agave that is harvested from the foothills of the Popocatépetl volcano in Puebla, Mexico. The agave is roasted in a pit with volcanic stones to give it a smoky flavor, but it's not femented (the step in the production process that creates alcohol). The full list of ingredients is as follows–Espadín agave, organic agave nectar, glycerol, malic acid, citric acid, salt, natural flavors, natural mushroom, and glycolipids (to preserve freshness). 'Ivan and I have been talking about exploring further into the discovery of mezcal since launching Almave, so I'm super excited that we're now bringing Almave Humo to the table,' said Hamilton in a statement. 'We've found that many agave spirit drinkers begin with tequila, then learn about mezcales as they gain a curiosity and appreciation that inspires them to venture further into the world of agave spirits,' added Saldaña. 'Almave Humo offers distinct, smoky notes for those seeking complex cocktails while embracing a lifestyle beyond proof.' We were able to sample Humo, and there is indeed a smokiness to the nose and palate, but it's more like a savory barbecue smoke than what you'd expect from a mezcal. It's a clear NA spirit that sips a bit thin if you try it neat, but it's not overpowered by sweetness as is often the case with this category. Overall, it might actually work well as a decent NA spirit substitute in a cocktail. You can purchase a bottle now (SRP $36) from the website to try for yourself.
