Average speed cameras appear on County Durham A1(M) - when they'll be turned on

Yahooa day ago
Drivers will need to watch their speedos after cameras appeared at the side of the A1(M) in County Durham.
But the average speed cameras are yet to be turned on, and are being installed ahead of roadworks planned for later this year.
Motorists reported yellow poles, some mounted with cameras, went up this week along the northbound side of the motorway between Junctions 61 at Bowburn and 62 at Durham, but signs confirm they are not currently in use.
It comes as resurfacing works are carried out with the hard shoulder closed and a 50mph limit currently in place towards northbound.
A National Highways spokesperson confirmed: 'The speed enforcement cameras are being installed for a follow-on scheme that begins immediately after the completion of the resurfacing scheme.
'Installing them now, while traffic management measures are already in place, saves us having to close the carriageway again in the future to install them.'

The cameras are expected to be turned on in early October with a 60mph temporary speed limit in place north and southbound.
The restrictions will be in place for six months until the end of March 2026, it is expected, while the barrier in the central reservation between Junction 61 at Bowburn and Junction 62 Carville is replaced.
The work will see traffic moved into the hard shoulder and lane one with the outside lane closed to allow for the works.

Aggressive Negotiations: George Russell Doesn't Want To Be Locked Down By Mercedes

Read the full story on Backfire News It seems George Russell is keeping his options open and so doesn't want to be locked down by Mercedes for multiple seasons. Now that speculation about Max Verstappen going to Mercedes for next season has been shown as erroneous, one would think Russell would be eager to get a multi-year contract with the team locked as stability seems to be a thing of the past in Formula One, Russell is embracing it, probably thinking it will play to his advantage. After all, he's probably nearing his peak performance capabilities as a driver and with the 2026 season rule changes coming, might want to see how things shake out. "I think drivers who are chasing long-term deals feel they need that security,' he told 'I've never had a long-term deal, and I don't need a long-term deal, because it should always be about performance. And if I'm not performing, the team shouldn't be tied in with me. That's as simple as that." Russsell went on to admit that the talks with Verstappen made him 'at risk' as he did not 'have huge power' as negotiations are were ongoing with the Dutch driver. Because Verstappen could exit his Red Bull contract at the end of the 2026 season, it's still possible Russell would get the boot from Mercedes. It seems things are about to get even more interesting in F1 as drivers could be shuffled around rapidly in preparation for the 2027 season. That could mean some might disappear from the series completely, some new faces might emerge, and countless opportunities might be created in the ensuing chaos. If nothing else, that kind of shakeup could make F1 even more interesting to watch. Image via Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team/Facebook

Cardile working for Aston after dispute resolved

Aston Martin have resolved their legal dispute over their new chief technical officer Enrico Cardile. The Italian, who was formerly Ferrari's chassis technical director, signed for Aston Martin last summer but the team had taken legal action to prevent him starting work. But a statement from Aston Martin on Monday said: "We are pleased that a resolution has been found and that Enrico can move forward with the team as we look to 2026 and beyond as our chief technical officer, leading our design and technical functions at the AMR Technology Campus. "The legal process in which Enrico has been engaged in Italy has now been resolved and Enrico is working at Silverstone." Cardile will work under managing technical partner Adrian Newey, who started work in March after leaving Red Bull last year. Newey has been leading work on the car Aston Martin are designing for the 2026 rules, and the start of their new factory deal with engine partner Honda. Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll will continue to drive for Aston Martin next year. The Spaniard is entering the last year of his contract and will turn 45 in July 2026. Alonso has previously said he will go into 2026 thinking it will be his last year in F1, but is keeping an open mind as to whether he might want to continue longer. "Probably - or at least to start - it will be my last season in F1," he told BBC Sport last December. "Because my contract finishes at the end of 2026. It is the time of delivering and the time of truth. High expectations." 'He definitely has it', so why did Hamilton say he was useless? Lyft, China's Baidu to launch robotaxi service in Europe next year

By Akash Sriram (Reuters) -U.S. ride-hailing company Lyft said on Monday it will partner with China's Baidu to deploy robotaxis across Europe starting next year, marking the Chinese search engine giant's first foray into the European self-driven taxi sector. The partnership will launch initially in Germany and the United Kingdom, with Baidu's electric RT6 robotaxis operating on Lyft's platform pending regulatory approval. The rollout aims to scale to thousands of vehicles across Europe in the coming years, leveraging Lyft's $200 million acquisition of European mobility app FreeNow, completed on Thursday. The deal gives Lyft access to operations in nine countries and over 180 cities, marking its first expansion outside North America. Under the partnership, Lyft will operate the platform, managing customer services and fleet logistics, while Baidu will supply autonomous vehicles and technical expertise. "What we're excited about with FreeNow is they have a deep, long-lasting relationship with regulators, and we want to go and have those conversations about how we do this," Lyft Executive Vice President of Driver Experience Jeremy Bird told Reuters. The UK government has fast-tracked its robotaxi timeline and is aiming for initial services with paying passengers by spring 2026. Companies such as Uber and Wayve are also preparing for deployment once regulatory clearance is granted. The deal comes as rival Uber has expanded its global robotaxi efforts, working with Waymo, WeRide, and Momenta, with a European launch also set for 2026. Uber's global robotaxi presence intensifies pressure on Lyft to expand beyond its North American home market and build its autonomous capabilities. Baidu's Apollo Go service currently operates over 1,000 vehicles across 15 cities globally and has completed more than 11 million rides, but its partnership with Lyft marks its first commercial move into Europe.
