Tourists on holiday island warned to 'move away from the coast' after earthquake

Daily Mirror14-05-2025

Tourists on Crete must today avoid the coasts after an earthquake sparked tsunami fears.
Holidaymakers have been ordered to "move away from the coast immediately" following an earthquake, which has led to concern for a tsunami in Greece. The powerful 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck on Tuesday, and the epicentre was near the coast of Crete, the most populous of theGreek islands.
Since then, Greece's Ministry for Climate Crisis and Civil Protection said: "A magnitude 5.9 earthquake occurred 48km SE of Kasos. Risk of possible Tsunami in your area. Move away from the coast immediately. Follow the instructions of Local Authorities."
The alert has been issued this morning along parts of the coastlines, which are popular with tourists from across Europe, including British residents.
Locals and tourists should move to higher ground as a precaution. Emergency services remain on high alert as aftershocks of the tremor are still possible.
There are currently no immediate reports of injuries or major damage, but officials are monitoring the situation closely and have warned people to remain vigilant.
Brits with flights booked to Crete, home to two large airports, should check with their airlines in advance of their departure times. It is understood there are no significant cancellations to the island at this stage.
The Greek island of Crete and its surrounding region have long been known as one of Europe's most earthquake-prone zones. Back in October 2021, a 6.3 magnitude quake rattled Crete just weeks after another deadly tremor killed one person and injured at least a dozen others.
The earlier quake, which happened in September 2021, devastated villages near Heraklion, damaging hundreds of homes and leaving scores of families displaced.
Schools and public buildings were also left with visible cracks, and residents were forced to sleep outdoors amid fears of further shocks.
One of the most powerful quakes in recent memory struck near the island of Karpathos in October 2021, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale. Though no fatalities were reported, the tremor sent shockwaves through nearby islands including Kasos and Rhodes.
Going back even further, in July 2006, a 6.7 magnitude earthquake shook the seabed south of Crete, sending tremors through mainland Greece and waking people in Athens in the early hours.
Greece sits at the meeting point of the African and Eurasian tectonic plates, making it a hotspot for seismic activity. While locals are no strangers to the earth rumbling beneath their feet, the fear of a major quake remains ever present.

A British couple who were killed alongside their young child in the horror Air India plane crash have been pictured for the first time. Akeel Nanawaba, 36, his partner Hanna Vorajee, 30, and their four-year-old daughter, Sarah were returning home from a five-day family celebration when the plane went down this morning. Akeel and Hanna ran a successful global recruitment business with offices in Gloucester and Ahmedabad. ‌ Their friend and business partner Shoyeb Khan Nagori said: "I had dinner with them last night. They were a lovely family and Akeel and his wife were extremely successful people." ‌ Struggling to speak about young Sarah, he added: "They were here to celebrate a family festival and to spend some time with Akeel's father. Akeel was a really good man, I'm in shock." Another British family on board have now been named as hotel manager Javed Ali Syed, his wife Mariam, and their children Amani, four, and Zayn. Mr Syed had earned recognition in his field, winning a Team Member of the Year award at the Comfort Inn London in Westminster in 2017. Most recently, he worked at the Best Western Kensington Olympia Hotel. Also feared dead are Raxa Modha, 55, her two-year-old grandson Rudra, and daughter-in-law Yasha Kamdar. Mrs Modha had spent several months in India caring for her terminally ill husband Kishor, who had wished to spend his final days in his homeland. The family, originally from Northamptonshire, were flying back to the UK following his recent death. A family friend said: 'It's incredibly sad, the whole family is already grieving Kishor's death.' ‌ British influencer Jamie Meek and his husband Fiongal Greenlaw are also among those feared dead. Just moments before boarding the ill-fated plane, wellness guru Meek, 45, and Greenlaw, 39, posted a video from Ahmedabad airport. The pair - who co-founded the Wellness Foundry, a company promoting holistic living - are based in London and been on a holiday in India. They had previously made appearances on ITV's This Morning to showcase their wellness brand. ‌ The Boeing 787 went down with more than 240 people aboard shortly after take-off, authorities said. It was the first fatal crash since the plane, also known as the Dreamliner, went into service in 2009, according to the Aviation Safety Network database. A police commissioner had earlier said there appeared to be no one who had made it out of the crash before one man who had miraculously survived the tragic incident spoke to the Hindustan Times. ‌ Vishwash Kumar Ramesh was travelling home from a holiday visiting family in seat 11A of the Gatwick-bound flight when it took off from Ahmedabad on June 12. The British national, who said he suffered "impact injuries" on his chest, eyes and feet, explained there was "a loud noise" before the plane crashed. The 40-year-old, who has lived in London for 20 years, said: "It all happened so quickly." Vishwash, who still has his boarding pass, said he was in India for a few days to visit his family and was going back to the UK with his 45-year-old brother Ajay Kumar Ramesh. ‌ Sharing details of the terrifying experience, he told the Hindustan Times: "When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital." Vishwash said his brother was seated in a different row on the plane and said: "We visited Diu. He was travelling with me and I can't find him anymore. Please help me find him." ‌ Ahmedabad police commissioner Gyanendra Singh Malik told the Associated Press that "some locals would also have died" when the plane fell on top of the dining area of B.J. Medical College. Air India chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran described the crash as a "tragic accident" and a "devastating event" and said emergency response teams are at the site. Campbell Wilson, the chief executive of Air India, expressed his "deep sorrow" after the incident, adding: "This is a difficult day for all of us at Air India and our efforts now are focused entirely on the needs of our passengers, crew members, their families and loved ones."

Brit influencer and husband feared dead in Air India plane crash hours after final post

Wellness guru Jamie Meek and husband Fiongal Greenlaw posted a video from Ahmedabad airport just moments before boarding the ill-fated plane. A British influencer and his husband are among those feared dead after an Air India plane heading to London Gatwick smashed into a college with hundreds on board. Just moments before boarding the ill-fated plane, wellness guru Jamie Meek and husband Fiongal Greenlaw posted a video from Ahmedabad airport. As reported by the Mirror, Meek, 45, and Greenlaw, 39, co-founded the Wellness Foundry, a company promoting holistic living. ‌ The couple, who are based in London, had been on a holiday in India and had previously made appearances on ITV's This Morning to showcase their wellness brand. The final video shared from the airport showed the couple in vibrant floral shirts, smiling and relaxed as they prepared to fly home. ‌ In the clip, Fiongal says, 'We are at the airport just boarding. Goodbye India. Ten-hour flight back to England. What was your biggest takeaway Jamie?' to which Jamie replies, 'I don't know,' prompting laughter from Fiongal who responds 'thanks for your contribution.' Fiongal then jokingly says his takeaway was 'don't lose your patience with your partner,' to which Jamie replied 'you snapped at me at the airport for having chai.' Fiongal, who is surrounded by fellow travellers, ends the clip by saying he's returning to the UK 'happily, happily calm.' Earlier videos captured highlights of their time in Ahmedabad, including scenes from a luxury hotel following a long car journey. Fiongal can be seen in one clip stretched out on a large bed, showcasing a swing in their room, calling the space 'beautiful' and adding he is 'feeling very, very happy.' ‌ The couple are believed to have spent two weeks in India, documenting their travels through numerous social media updates. Their shared content included moments such as getting henna tattoos, shopping for textiles, and navigating bustling streets in a tuk-tuk. Fiongal posted a message just one day before the crash marking the end of their trip: 'So, it's our last night in India and we've had a magical experience. Some mind-blowing things have happened. We are going to put all this together and create a vlog. It's my first ever vlog about the whole trip and we want to share it.' Of the 242 people onboard Air India Flight 171, at least 204 bodies have been recovered from the crash site near Ahmedabad Airport, a local police chief said. Part of the jet fell on top of the dining area of B.J. Medical College, killing at least five medical students and injuring almost 50. Miracolously, British national Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, who was onboard the flight says he survived the deadly crash. Tata Sons, which owns Air India, will offer around £86,000 to the families of each person who died in the Ahmedabad plane crash, the company said.
