Popular farmers market opens for summer season
CANANDAIGUA, NY — The reaction from customers and vendors to the most recent Winter Canandaigua Farmers Market season — one that saw a move from its traditional winter home to the Mill Street market pavilion — was universally positive, according to Bob Stevenson, who manages the market.
The pavilion, of course, is where the market operates throughout the summer and fall season, which opens June 7.
'People have gone out of their way to say thanks for the move,' Stevenson said.
The market will add three new vendors this year, but customers can expect many of the same faces and vibe as previous markets offered. Yes, there will be a music series this year. And yes, there will be family-friendly special events throughout the season.
'Over the last few years, the market has become much more than a place to purchase healthy, fresh local products,' Stevenson said. 'It has become a community that is an integral part of downtown Canandaigua.'
Here's more of what you should know.
The market is located in downtown Canandaigua on the east side of South Main Street in the parking lot between Lafayette Avenue and Mill Street.
Signs are posted to direct visitors to the market, 167 Mill St. When you've found the pavilion, you've found the market.
Opening day is 9 a.m. to noon June 7.
The market operates Saturdays through Oct. 30.
The market boasts 35 vendors who represent a wide variety of locally grown and locally produced fruit, vegetables, meats, meals, honey, maple syrup, mushrooms and other food-related products.
Vendors and customers are very loyal and over the years have gotten to know each other. A varied mix of familiar faces include Seasons of NY, which Stevenson's wife Anne runs and offers soups, entrees and pastries; Seneca Vegetables, an original market vendor; Riedman Happy Hives, with honey and honeycombs; Ms. Linzy's Mac-N-Cheese; Howell Farm, for garlic, peppers and tomatoes; and many others.
Two award-winning breweries in the Finger Lakes region, Brewery Ardennes of Geneva and Keuka Brewing Co. of Hammonsport, also will be there.

'We are a true farmers market. That is, our vendors grow or produce what they sell,' Stevenson said. 'They don't buy and sell products from other producers."
Black Sheep Distillery, from Prattsburgh, Steuben County, produces a small, yet diverse selection of handcrafted spirits that represent the terroir of the Finger Lakes and New York state.
Spirit and Abundance, from Rochester, crafts plant-based, artisanal cheese that is free of dairy, gluten and soy.
Amazing Grains Bread Co., from Fairport, uses fresh ingredients and traditional methods to produce artisanal breads.

The implications of Corbin Burnes' season-ending injury go far beyond the Diamondbacks
As the news on Corbin Burnes sadly demonstrates, David Stearns might have it right. Stearns, like Hall of Fame general manager Pat Gillick before him, loathes awarding long-term contracts to starting pitchers. In 11 years running the Milwaukee Brewers, who never spend big, and New York Mets, who often do, he has yet to sign a pitcher for more than he gave free-agent left-hander Sean Manaea last offseason – three years, $75 million. Advertisement Stearns was willing to make an exception during the 2023-24 offseason for Yoshinobu Yamamoto, but only because the Japanese right-hander was 25. The Mets' three rotation additions last offseason – Manaea and right-handers Clay Holmes and Griffin Canning – cost a total of $117.25 million – or nearly $100 million less than the Arizona Diamondbacks paid Burnes, the latest big-name pitcher to blow out his elbow and require Tommy John surgery. For Stearns, a second straight offseason of bargain shopping – after hitting on Manaea, Luis Severino and José Quintana in 2024 – appeared a risk. But look at the Mets now, second in the majors in rotation ERA, with another of their modest acquisitions, Paul Blackburn, shutting out the Los Angeles Dodgers for five innings Monday night in his 2025 debut. And by contrast, look at the Diamondbacks. The news Friday on Burnes severely damages the Diamondbacks' chances not just for 2025, but also 2026. The Diamondbacks, at 31-31, 6.5 games back in the NL West, entered Friday with a four-game winning streak, but qualified as something of a disappointment. If they fail to sustain their recent run, they could sell at the trade deadline rather than push forward with a $187 million payroll, the highest in the franchise's 27-year history. The implications of Burnes' surgery, though, go far beyond the Diamondbacks' immediate future. The inevitability of pitching injuries haunts the entire sport. The enjoyment of watching a Paul Skenes or Tarik Skubal dominate is tempered by a question never far from anyone's mind: Who's next? Burnes, 30, signed a six-year, $210 million free-agent contract, matching Max Scherzer for the seventh-largest guarantee awarded a pitcher. The largest and 11th largest belong to the Dodgers' Yamamoto and Blake Snell. The second, fourth and 17th largest belong to New York Yankees pitchers Gerrit Cole, lefty Max Fried and lefty Carlos Rodón. Yamamoto missed nearly three months last season. Snell will miss at least two months this season. And those are relatively good outcomes, considering the potential for injuries that require even longer recoveries. Cole, after starting his nine-year contract with four mostly stellar seasons, is out until 2026 recovering from Tommy John surgery. Another prominent Yankees starter, reigning American League Rookie of the Year Luis Gil, has yet to pitch this season due to a lat strain. And club officials surely are concerned that Fried, in the first year of an eight-year deal, is on pace to pitch a career-high 209 innings. Advertisement The Dodgers and Yankees thrive because they spend on high-end talent, excel at pitching development and build depth to compensate for injuries. Teams without their resources cannot manage to do all three, and the Burnes injury will serve as another red flag, further discouraging mid-market teams from investing heavily in starting pitching. The next class of free-agent starters includes the Diamondbacks' Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, the San Diego Padres' Dylan Cease and Michael King, the Houston Astros' Framber Valdez and, if he declines a player option, the Kansas City Royals' Seth Lugo. For some of those pitchers, short-term deals with high average annual values might be a safer bet. Or maybe not. The Baltimore Orioles tried such an approach with Burnes, offering him a four-year, $180 million contract that carried an average annual value that was $10 million higher than the Diamondbacks' offer. Turns out the Orioles were fortunate Burnes said no. If he had suffered the same injury, half of the deal essentially would have gone to waste. This is an industry problem, one the sport is not close to addressing, much less fixing. Last December, Major League Baseball issued a report to the front offices of all 30 clubs, the culmination of a yearlong study on pitching injuries. Shock of shocks, the study cited the proliferation of max-effort pitching, both in velocity and movement, as the primary reason injury rates among pitchers 'skyrocketed' over the past several decades. Yet, when it comes to developing solutions, it's a wonder team executives and league officials do not blow out their own shoulders, as fiercely as they throw up their hands. Meanwhile, pitchers keep trying to throw their fastballs harder and their breaking balls sharper. Nothing will change until the incentives change, until the league implements new rules that effectively force pitchers to ease up on the throttle. Advertisement One possibility, a phased-in reduction from a maximum of 13 to 12 to perhaps even 11 pitchers, evokes fear of even more injuries. But seriously, how much worse can the situation even get? If the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results, baseball has officially gone insane. The Diamondbacks are merely the latest example of how quickly a team's best-laid intentions can go awry. A two-year, $47.5 million deal for lefty Jordan Montgomery backfired, with Montgomery ultimately requiring Tommy John surgery. A four-year, $80 million deal for lefty Eduardo Rodríguez, to this point, has been a disaster, too. And now the Diamondbacks face the potential departures of Gallen and Kelly, too. Gallen, represented by Scott Boras, has regressed to a 5.13 ERA in 13 starts, but almost certainly will seek top dollar on the open market. The Diamondbacks might stand a better chance of retaining Kelly, who is represented by Apex Baseball, but will they even want to dive back into the starting pitching market? Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen is not one to concede. The team perhaps has too much invested in this season to turn back. Trading Gallen and/or Kelly with Burnes and Montgomery out and Rodríguez yet to show consistency would leave the team scrambling to fill out their rotation. Then again, if the season is lost, Hazen also might feel an obligation to owner Ken Kendrick, who made a good-faith effort to build a championship roster despite playing in the same division as the spendaholic Dodgers. By parting at the deadline with their six potential free agents earning the most money – Gallen, Kelly and first baseman Josh Naylor, third baseman Eugenio Suárez, outfielder Randal Grichuk and reliever Shelby Miller – the Diamondbacks would save about $17 million. They probably wouldn't go that far, and depending upon how they are playing, might even buy and sell simultaneously. They also would need to weigh the proposed returns for Gallen and Naylor against the draft-pick compensation they would receive if the players rejected qualifying offers. But without Burnes, almost everything could end up in play. Constructing a 2026 rotation beyond Rodríguez, Brandon Pfaadt and Ryne Nelson would be a challenge. But when Hazen traded Zack Greinke at the 2019 deadline, he acquired Mike Leake to cover innings in a separate deal and also landed Gallen, then a rookie, for infielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. Hazen could back fill the same way again, and his internal rotation candidates would include converted reliever Bryce Jarvis, the reigning Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week, and prospects such as Cristian Mena and Yilber Díaz. Advertisement Not quite what the Diamondbacks put together this season, a powerhouse collection featuring Burnes, Gallen, Kelly, Rodríguez and Pfaadt. Kendrick and Hazen had the right idea when they signed Burnes, or at least, the right idea in theory. They were not backing down from the Dodgers. They were doing everything possible to win. That's the way the game should operate, right? Pay the best players, reap the benefits. The scourge of pitching injuries, though, is flipping the equation, to the point where Stearns' strategy might be preferable. Rather than pay top dollar for pitching, he'll simply target short-term options with upside, then rely on the Mets' pitching lab to maximize their potential. For the second straight year, it's working. And even if recent acquisitions like Holmes and Canning fail to sustain success, Stearns faces only so much downside. When it comes to signing starting pitchers, he will go only so far. And never as far as the Diamondbacks did for Corbin Burnes. DOGE just got a green light to access your Social Security data. Here's what that means
When people think of Social Security, they typically think of monthly benefits — for the roughly 69 million retirees, disabled workers, dependents and survivors who receive them today. But efforts by the Department of Government Efficiency this year to access the Social Security Administration's data systems should conjure up thoughts of data on hundreds of millions of people. Why? Because the SSA's multiple data systems contain an extensive trove of personal information on most people living in the United States today — as well as those who have died. While a lower federal court had blocked DOGE's efforts to access such data — which it argued it needs in order to curtail waste, fraud and abuse — the Supreme Court lifted that order on Friday, allowing DOGE to access the data for now. The three liberal justices — Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson — dissented. In her opinion, Jackson wrote, 'The government wants to give DOGE unfettered access to this personal, non-anonymized information right now — before the courts have time to assess whether DOGE's access is lawful,' she added. The personal data the Social Security Adminstration has on most Americans runs 'from cradle to grave,' said Kathleen Romig, who used to work at the SSA, first as a retirement policy analyst and more recently as a senior adviser in the Office of the Commissioner. DOGE was created unilaterally by President Donald Trump with the goal of 'modernizing Federal technology and software to maximize governmental efficiency and productivity,' according to his executive order. To date, the group has caused chaos and intimidation at a number of federal agencies where it has sought to take control and shut down various types of spending. It is also the subject of various lawsuits questioning its legal right to access wholesale the personal data of Americans on highly restricted government IT systems and to fire groups of federal workers in the manner it has. Here's just a partial list of the data the SSA systems likely have about you: your name, Social Security number, date and place of birth, gender, addresses, marital and parental status, your parents' names, lifetime earnings, bank account information, immigration and work authorization status, health conditions if you apply for disability benefits, and use of Medicare after a certain age, which the SSA may periodically check to ascertain whether you're still alive. Other types of personal information also may be obtained or matched through the SSA's data-sharing agreements with the IRS and the Department of Health and Human Services. Information on your assets and living arrangements also may be gathered if you apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which is meant to help those with very limited income. As with the IRS data systems to which DOGE has also sought access, the SSA systems are old, complex, interconnected and run on programming language developed decades ago. If you make a change in one system, it could trip up another if you don't know what you're doing, said Romig, who now is director of Social Security and disability policy at the liberal Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. And, just as at the IRS, there are concerns that if DOGE team members get access to the SSA systems and seek to make changes directly or through an SSA employee, they could cause technical errors or base their decisions on incorrect understandings of the data. For example, multibillionaire CEO Elon Musk, a driving force at DOGE, had incorrectly claimed that SSA is making payments to millions of dead people. His claim appeared to be based on the so-called Numident list, which is a limited collection of personal data, Romig said. The list includes names, Social Security numbers, and a person's birth and death dates. But the Numident list does not reflect the death dates for 18.9 million people who were born in 1920 or earlier. That's a known problem, which the Social Security inspector general in a 2023 report already recommended the agency correct. That same report, however, also noted that 'almost none of the 18.9 million number holders currently receive SSA payments.' And making any decisions based on mistaken interpretations could create real-world problems for individuals. For example, Romig said, there are different types of Social Security numbers assigned — eg, for US citizens, for noncitizens with work authorization and for people on student visas who do not have work authorization. But a person's status can change over time. For example, someone on a student visa may eventually get work authorization. But it's up to the individual to update the SSA on their status. If they don't do so immediately or maybe not even for years, the lists on SSA systems may not be fully up to date. So it's easy to see how a new entity like DOGE, unfamiliar with the complexity of Social Security's processes, might make a quick decision affecting a particular group of people on a list that itself may not be current. Charles Blahous, a senior research strategist at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, has been a leading proponent of addressing Social Security's long-term funding shortfall. And he is all for rooting out waste, fraud and abuse. But, Blahous noted, 'best estimates of improper payments in Social Security are less than 1% of the program's outlays. I've been concerned that this particular conversation is fueling profound misimpressions about Social Security and the policy challenges surrounding it.' SSA's data systems are housed in locked rooms, and permission to view — never mind alter — information on them has always been highly restricted, Romig said, noting that she was fingerprinted and had to pass a background check before being allowed to view data for her research while at the agency — and it could only be data that had no personally identifiable information. Given the variety of personal data available, there are also a number of federal privacy and other laws limiting the use and dissemination of such information. Such laws are intended to prevent not only improper use or leaks of the data by individuals, but abuse of power by government, according to the Center on Democracy and Technology. DOGE's arrival at the SSA resulted in a number of seasoned employees leaving the agency, including Michelle King, a long-time career service executive who briefly served as acting commissioner from January 20 until February 16. She resigned after DOGE staffers attempted to access sensitive government records. In her place, SSA employee Lee Dudek was named acting director. Dudek put out a statement on SSA's 'Commitment to Agency Transparency and Protecting Benefits and Information' when he came on. In it, he noted that DOGE personnel: a) 'cannot make changes to agency systems, benefit payments, or other information'; b) 'only have read access' to data; c) 'do not have access to data related to a court ordered temporary restraining order, current or future'; and d) 'must follow the law and if they violate the law they will be referred to the Department of Justice for possible prosecution.'
