Our 19th Wisconsin Student of the Week poll has now closed. Thanks to all who voted.
This week, we had two students who the nominators described as being great examples — both to other students and in representing their respective school's values. Read who won our weekly poll here, and learn how you can nominate a student from your high school for our statewide poll.
Chantel Ringo-Elim of Messmer High School was our winner this week. Messmer counselor Melissa Hoeppner described Ringo-Elim's "passion for helping others" in her nomination.
When she's not studying, Ringo-Elim volunteers with the Greater Milwaukee Urban League program and at St. Ben's Community Meals, Hoeppner said. Ringo-Elim also has a paid internship at the Versiti Blood Bank and plans to attend Concordia University to study nursing this fall.
"Chantel, we are so proud of you," Hoeppner concluded. "Continue shining!"
High school students are nominated for Student of the Week by principals, teachers, youth organizations and others who work with teens. Voting is open each week from 5 a.m. Monday until noon Thursday with polls at jsonline.com, postcrescent.com and greenbaypressgazette.com.

Meet the azcentral Student of the Week nominees for May 26-30, 2025

Student of the Week offers schools the chance to celebrate teens who have placed in an art, dance or music competition, excelled in a science fair, won an essay contest, received a scholarship, were recognized for their volunteer service, or excelled in some other way. All high schools in Arizona are invited to nominate students to be included in an online poll where readers vote to choose the Student of the Week. Student of the Week voting is open from 6 a.m. Monday through noon, Wednesday. The winner is announced online on Friday morning. Meet this week's nominees! Ruben Camarena Gonzalez came to Carl Hayden through our Intro to High School summer program as an incoming freshman. Now, wrapping up his junior year, he has grown into a focused, grounded and self-motivated young man. Ruben is steady, thoughtful and driven — he keeps up with his schoolwork, gives everything to his volleyball team on the court and consistently holds himself to the highest standards. He has big dreams of furthering his education and studying business, and he's doing the work every day to make that future real. What stands out most is the way he carries himself — with kindness, determination and a sense of responsibility to those around him. Ruben is a student we're proud to have on campus, and he's a truly deserving choice for Student of the Week. Nomination submitted by Andrew Scott, teacher and coach, Carl Hayden Community High School. I am honored to nominate Angelique "Angie" M. Chavarria as Student of the Week. As her ninth grade English language arts teacher, I've had the privilege of watching her grow into a thoughtful, driven and compassionate leader. Angie is involved in StuGo, several after-school clubs and programs, and is currently earning honors credit despite not initially starting in the honors class. This achievement alone speaks to her resilience and commitment to excellence. Angie consistently goes the extra mile in her academics, not just to master content, but to support others. She's the kind of student who learns something and then turns around to help a classmate understand it. She is open-minded, eager to take on challenges and always lifts those around her. Angie is one of the kindest people I know, and it's clear that her positive impact reaches far beyond the classroom. She truly exemplifies what it means to lead with heart. Nomination submitted by Jane Miller, teacher, Alhambra High School. Aidan Mead, a senior at Apache Junction High School, plays on the varsity baseball team. He is a leader on and off the field. Aidan is an excellent student, but he is also known for his friendly and energetic personality. His dedication on and off the field has earned him the title of Pinal Prep Performer of the week for his outstanding performance this season as a pitcher for the baseball team. After graduation, Aidan is planning on attending Arizona State University. Nomination submitted by Lisa Ginn, principal, Apache Junction High School. Dezzarae Medina, a senior at Camelback High School, is a shining example of what it means to lead with heart, purpose and positivity. As head Link Crew leader, she represents our school community with courage, dignity and greatness. She acts with love and kindness in every interaction and brings a spirit of compassion to all she does. She finds joy in supporting others and consistently looks for ways to uplift those around her. Her commitment to personal growth and to making a difference makes her truly deserving of Student of the Week. Nomination submitted by Erika Wimble, freshman house coordinator, and Connie Doherty, literacy coach, Camelback High School. This contest aims to introduce readers not just to the student who winds up winning but to all of the highly accomplished nominees. Here's what school leaders had to say about this week's nominees: More school news: 2025 graduations dates for Indianapolis and surrounding high schools Venita is a wonderful example of Christian kindness. She is a person who leads by example, always speaking to others with kind words and being inclusive to everyone she meets. She is also a person of strong faith who lives it each day. We are blessed as a community to have someone like her who truly tries each day to love her neighbor as herself. First off, Henry helps our in-school food pantry - Sparky's Closet. He works tirelessly to move items from delivery trucks to storage inside the school. Then, twice a month, he assists with doing a food distribution to local families as they drive up to the school. He and his teacher, Courtney Wilkerson, helped make this program a success. Second, he is an active participant in our IHSAA Champions Together program. He participates in our Unified Soccer and Basketball games. He also comes to the Unified Skills Basketball Clinic. He is a tremendous teammate and always brings enthusiasm to all the events. Ahbisak's dedication and strong work ethic earned her a spot at the Kelley School of Business, where she will pursue a degree in accounting. Her academic excellence has also earned her the distinguished title of a Southport High School STAR, a recognition given to students maintaining a GPA above 4.0. Beyond the classroom, Ahbisak shines as a member of the tennis team, and her involvement in MSA, Spell Bowl Club, and Key Club showcases her commitment to leadership, service, and school spirit. Ademikun exemplifies all the qualities we value in our classroom community. Ademikun is incredibly inquisitive, curious, and hardworking. He approaches each day with enthusiasm and a strong desire to learn, always showing respect to his peers and teachers alike. His positive attitude and dedication to his studies make a noticeable difference in our classroom environment. When he is present, our class is brighter, more focused, and filled with thoughtful questions and meaningful discussion. His eagerness to grow and contribute truly inspires those around him. Roncalli Communications teacher AJ Ablog said, "Simon has a sharp understanding of what makes a video work. It's more than just knowing the technical stuff, he gets it. You'll always see him involved in lectures; he gives his thoughts and participates, which makes class way more interesting. On top of that, he's super productive and seriously talented when creating videos. He's not just going through the motions; he's passionate and puts a lot of skill and effort into everything he makes, making him a standout student in my classroom." Intellectual curiosity within the classroom and creative approaches to problem-solving situations were also cited. Oyin is the epitome of the type of student that high school teachers wish for. She is an independent thinker. She questions and analyzes material well. She took on the toughest form of debate this year as a novice and did her best while representing our school well. Oyindamola worked to promote the Riley Marathon event. She was a state finalist and is nationally bound in the business department. Daily, she persists to come to school even on a crowded school bus, which sometimes passes her; she then has to get rides to school to be here to complete her studies. On paper, she holds a high grade point average, but beyond that, she is no average student. Oyindamola is the student who would make you want to teach for years to come. Marco is an excellent student whose commitment to academic and personal growth is impressive. He is curious, reliable, and eager to improve, consistently implementing feedback and striving for success. His dedication to the band mirrors his academic drive. Marco is the kind of student every teacher wants in class. Jameson is PASSIONATE about learning Spanish, and it's impressive. Jameson gives 100% effort in class daily, solid participation and a near-perfect grade, but that's not what led to his nomination. The way he seeks out more information about Spanish to learn as much as he can is both rare and admirable, and I LOVE having Jameson in class. Thank you for being awesome, "Alejandro"!
