Two Tennessee State players find home at Jackson State

Miami Herald08-04-2025

A pair of offensive linemen have decided to make Jackson State football their home after a stint at Tennessee State. Alex Valbuena and Ace Meadows both announced on social media on Monday that they were committing to JSU.
Alex Valbuena, a 6-foot, 275-pound offensive lineman from Antioch, Tennessee, has been a dedicated member of the Tennessee State University (TSU) Tigers football team. After redshirting his freshman year in 2022, Valbuena played as a redshirt freshman in 2023 and continued as a redshirt sophomore in 2024. Throughout his tenure, he has worn jersey number 51 and primarily played the guard position. Notably, Valbuena started in the game against Southeast Missouri State on November 23, 2024. Prior to his collegiate career, he attended Lipscomb Academy in Nashville, where he earned first-team all-conference and all-state honors.
Ace Meadows, a 6-foot-7, 310-pound offensive lineman from Trenton, Tennessee, began his football journey at Peabody High School. There, he distinguished himself as a top offensive lineman recruit, earning recognition on the All-West Tennessee high school football team in 2023. In December 2023, Meadows committed to TSU, influenced by the leadership of head coach Eddie George, whom he described as 'one of the most humble men I've ever met.' Meadows entered TSU as a freshman in 2024.
In the 2024 season, the Tennessee State Tigers' offense demonstrated a balanced approach, averaging 190.0 rushing yards and 165.5 passing yards per game, culminating in an average of 355.5 total yards per game. The team scored 28 touchdowns-17 rushing and 10 passing-contributing to a total of 220 points for the season.
Eddie George left Tennessee State at the end of the 2024 season to take the head coaching job at Bowling Green. Jackson State won the 2024 HBCU National Championship with a victory over South Carolina State.

HBCU Contender to Face DII Titan in Week Zero Classic

The stage is set. On August 30, 2025, at historic Legion Field, in Birmingham, Alabama, Clark Atlanta University will face DII powerhouse Valdosta State in the Week Zero Labor Day Classic. A game that should be circled on the calendars of all HBCU football fans. What makes this game even more electric? It's more than just football. The Week Zero Classic is a multi-day cultural celebration that includes celebrity flag football, live concerts, food festivals, and esports tournaments. And at the heart of it all is one of the most intriguing matchups of the 2025 season: an emerging HBCU contender versus one of Division II's most decorated programs. Just two years ago, Clark Atlanta University football was struggling, finishing the 21023 season winless at 0-10. But the hiring of head coach Teddy Keaton changed everything. Keaton, a proven program builder with previous stops at Stillman and Allen University, wasted no time flipping the culture. In 2024, Clark Atlanta shocked the conference with a 7–3-1 record and a trip to the SIAC Championship Game-their first in over a decade. The engine behind the Panthers' resurgence? Quarterback David Wright, who threw for 3,271 yards and 31 touchdowns. Wright was named SIAC Offensive Player of the Year, and Keaton took home Coach of the Year honors. Now, the Panthers are no longer just a feel-good story. They're a legit contender-and their Week Zero test might be their biggest yet. Valdosta State is the gold standard of DII football. With four national championships (2004, 2007, 2012, 2018) and countless Gulf South titles, the Blazers have dominated the division for over two decades. But 2025 marks a new chapter. Former head coach Tremaine Jackson-a rising star in coaching circles-recently accepted the head job at FCS HBCU Prairie View A&M, creating a ripple effect through the program. While Valdosta remains loaded with talent, the departure opens the door for challengers-and Clark Atlanta aims to kick it in. This game is also the first of two back to back marquee matchups for Valdosta against rising HBCU powers. The Blazers will face Johnson C. Smith University the following week in Charlotte. Games that could help close the gap between PWI dominance and HBCU resurgence in DII football. The Week Zero Labor Day Classic is the ultimate fusion of culture, competition, and community. FAMU grabs staff member from Deion Sanders at Colorado

HBCU Gameday has confirmed that Florida A&M University has made a major addition to its athletics department. Maurice "Mo" Sims has been named the Associate Athletic Director for Sports Performance and Wellness at FAMU, a move expected to bolster the health and development of student-athletes across all programs. Sims brings a wealth of experience from some of the nation's top athletic programs. Most recently, he served on Deion Sanders' staff at the University of Colorado as the head strength and conditioning coach. He originally joined Sanders at Jackson State in 2022, playing a pivotal role in developing a winning culture within the program. Before his time at JSU, Sims spent two seasons at the University of Georgia, where he was part of the Bulldogs' 2021 College Football National Championship-winning staff. His previous coaching stops include stints at the University of North Carolina (2019), Army West Point (2017–2019), Indiana University (2014–2015), and North Carolina A&T (2012–2014). At each institution, he contributed to the physical and mental preparation of athletes at the highest level of competition. Sims also has roots as a player. He was an all-conference defensive back at Concord University before transferring to the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, giving him a firsthand understanding of the athlete experience and a unique perspective as a performance coach. He now steps into a senior leadership role at FAMU during a pivotal time for the Rattlers. The football team, led by second-year head coach James Colzie III, is seeking to build on recent momentum in the SWAC. Sims is currently participating in an offseason coaching fellowship with the NFL's Houston Texans, further strengthening his professional acumen. Colorado, under Sanders, wrapped up a 9-4 season in 2024 that ended with a 36-14 bowl loss to BYU. Since leaving Jackson State, Sanders has compiled a 13-12 record at CU. As Sims transitions into his new post at FAMU, his holistic approach to wellness and elite training standards are expected to elevate the entire athletic department. YouTube star and global streamer IShowSpeed added another wild moment to his IRL content by racing - and easily beating - fitness influencer and former HBCU football player Ashton Hall. The two internet personalities faced off in a footrace that quickly went viral. Hall, a former Alcorn State University running back, is now a well-known fitness coach and entrepreneur. But IShowSpeed had other plans. The 20-year-old streamer, real name Darren Watkins Jr., won all four races with ease. Speed didn't hold back, taunting Hall after each win with his trademark over-the-top energy. IShowSpeed shot to fame in 2021 with his loud, unpredictable streams. He mixes gaming, travel, and real-life adventures, earning a reputation as one of the world's biggest internet personalities. His energetic style and cultural curiosity have drawn a massive following. Hall, who helps fitness coaches grow their businesses, took the loss with humor.
