HBCU Contender to Face DII Titan in Week Zero Classic
What makes this game even more electric? It's more than just football. The Week Zero Classic is a multi-day cultural celebration that includes celebrity flag football, live concerts, food festivals, and esports tournaments. And at the heart of it all is one of the most intriguing matchups of the 2025 season: an emerging HBCU contender versus one of Division II's most decorated programs.
Just two years ago, Clark Atlanta University football was struggling, finishing the 21023 season winless at 0-10. But the hiring of head coach Teddy Keaton changed everything.
Keaton, a proven program builder with previous stops at Stillman and Allen University, wasted no time flipping the culture. In 2024, Clark Atlanta shocked the conference with a 7–3-1 record and a trip to the SIAC Championship Game-their first in over a decade.
The engine behind the Panthers' resurgence? Quarterback David Wright, who threw for 3,271 yards and 31 touchdowns. Wright was named SIAC Offensive Player of the Year, and Keaton took home Coach of the Year honors.
Now, the Panthers are no longer just a feel-good story. They're a legit contender-and their Week Zero test might be their biggest yet.
Valdosta State is the gold standard of DII football. With four national championships (2004, 2007, 2012, 2018) and countless Gulf South titles, the Blazers have dominated the division for over two decades.
But 2025 marks a new chapter. Former head coach Tremaine Jackson-a rising star in coaching circles-recently accepted the head job at FCS HBCU Prairie View A&M, creating a ripple effect through the program. While Valdosta remains loaded with talent, the departure opens the door for challengers-and Clark Atlanta aims to kick it in.
This game is also the first of two back to back marquee matchups for Valdosta against rising HBCU powers. The Blazers will face Johnson C. Smith University the following week in Charlotte. Games that could help close the gap between PWI dominance and HBCU resurgence in DII football.

DeSean Jackson gives four star WR from Oregon fresh start
Ryan Pellum is heading to Delaware State, giving new head coach DeSean Jackson a major offensive addition as the HBCU prepares for its first season under the former NFL All-Pro. Pellum's move from Oregon to Delaware State was first reported by On3 Sports and immediately adds intrigue to Jackson's debut campaign. This will mark Ryan Pellum's second college stop after spending his freshman season at Oregon. The Long Beach, California, native entered the transfer portal in January. Days later, he was arrested and later pleaded no contest to aggravated assault using a semi-automatic firearm in connection with a December 25 incident in Long Beach. Two additional special allegations were dismissed as part of the plea deal. Before his time at Oregon, Ryan Pellum was one of the most sought-after receivers in the 2024 recruiting class. He was ranked as a four-star prospect and the No. 171 overall recruit nationally, while also checking in as the No. 28 wide receiver and the No. 12 overall player in California. His high school career at Millikan included more than 3,700 receiving yards, multiple 1,000-yard seasons, and honors such as the Moore League Player of the Year in both 2021 and 2023. At Oregon in 2024, Ryan Pellum appeared in four games, utilizing a redshirt season. He saw limited action, playing three offensive snaps and eight on special teams, and fielded a punt in a win over Michigan. For DeSean Jackson, landing Ryan Pellum represents a high-upside gamble. The new Delaware State coach, who built his NFL career on explosive plays, now has a young receiver with elite speed, strong route-running skills, and a proven high school production record. If Pellum can make a smooth transition and stay on the field, he could be a central figure in the Hornets' offensive attack. Delaware State, long searching for a breakthrough in the MEAC, will open a new era with DeSean Jackson at the helm and Ryan Pellum as one of its most intriguing newcomers. North Carolina Central men's basketball coach LeVelle Moton had an unforgettable encounter during a recent visit to the Pittsburgh Steelers' training camp. Thanks to his long-standing friendship with Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, Moton has made attending camp an annual ritual for his own professional development as an HBCU coach. But this year's trip included an unexpected highlight: a sit-down conversation with one of football's all-time greats, quarterback Aaron Rodgers. "Man, it was amazing," Moton said via text to HBCU Gameday. "Obviously, Coach Tomlin and I are close so I attend training camp every year for Professional Development. This year, I took Nico Harrison (Dallas Mavericks) and Jeff McInnis…. Aaron saw me at lunch, introduced himself and told me that Mike T had nothing but great things to say about me." What started as a quick greeting turned into an extended, in-depth exchange. "Five minutes later, he came up and sat at our table and we talked like we've known each other for years," Moton recalled. "I think he's the greatest QB talent to ever play, so I asked him questions about preparation, film study, style of leadership, how he reads defenses… Man, it was a Ted Talk and Masterclass all in one. Great dude!"
