THE Skoda Octavia is a brilliant four-door car with a big boot — and it's fun to drive.
But the Octavia's boot doesn't open like a regular saloon even though it looks like one.

SPICE UP YOUR LIFE: With 265bhp, four doors, a big boot and a handy hatchback-style opening boot all wrapped in a sporty saloon , the Skoda Octavia vRS proves you can have your cake and eat it

Instead the boot lid opens the same way a hatchback does, adding to its useability.
The boot offers 600 litres but fold the seats down for 1,555 litres of load-lugging ability.
The sporty vRS model takes all this practicality and wraps it up with the fun and excitement of a potent hot-hatch.
And as we've been basking in the recent warm weather, you'll be hot in the city and on the open road looking cool, cruising in your Octavia vRS.

Power comes from a 2.0-litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder petrol engine that produces 265bhp and 370Nm of torque.
This allows the vRS to scamper from 0-100kph in 6.4seconds with a very respectable top speed of 250kph.
There are hot-hatches that produce more power, but the Octavia vRS is a little ripper and it's surprisingly quick in all the driving modes — even Eco.
But it's Sport mode that really brings it to life, with a fruity note from the dual exhausts and a few pops and bangs thrown in for good measure.

It's front-wheel drive, though, so in the wet or with a too-heavy right foot, the vRS's traction control will be working overtime to minimise wheel spin.
But in the dry, grip is really good and you can opt for Dynamic Chassis Control so you can fine-tune the suspension settings to suit your driving style.
However, the Sports Suspension, which drops the ride height by 15mm, comes as standard.
It looks like a proper sports car too.

My test car was painted Race Blue Metallic and all the vRS trim consists of sports bumpers with black inserts, black mirrors and black ducktail boot spoiler, vRS chrome exhaust pipes, red brake callipers and 19-inch 'Elias' alloy wheel.
However they come with plastic aero covers that, in my opinion, ruin the look of the rims and make it look cheap, especially as there is a great-looking alloy wheel below.
The interior is amazing; the seats look like they have been lifted out of a Skoda Fabia WRC2 car.
They're also heated and covered in lovely Alcantara trim, with red stitching, vRS badges and lots of carbon-style trim that all adds up to make the vRS Octavia feel extra sporty and special.

SPORTY CABIN: Loads of faux-carbon trim, red stitching and plenty of vRS badging

The 13-inch infotainment system is user-friendly and my test car came fitted with a banging, optional Canton sound system.
It's actually pretty economical, Skoda have an official figure of 41mpg.

And on a long motorway journey taking it very easy, I did average 40mpg.
But go full Stig mode and it's certainly not as frugal.

Nissan's plant in Advertisement 2 Nissan's plant in Sunderland has now gone live with its new electric truck charging station Credit: Getty At the end of last month, the firm announced the job cuts after it reported The facility, which cost £1.4million, is the first private, shared charging station of its kind in the UK. It is expected to cut carbon emissions by around 1,500 tonnes a year. Michael Simpson, vice president of supply chain management at Nissan AMIEO, said: "It is fantastic for our plant to be leading the charge to an electrified supply chain with this project. Advertisement Read More on Motors "We welcome the support we've received from our partners to bring the charging station to life and we're proud of what we have achieved. "The charging station looks brilliant and is a big step forward in Nissan's EV360 vision, which brings together electric vehicles, zero carbon energy and battery manufacturing." The station is capable of supporting 60 UK eHGV deliveries to the plant every day and marks just the beginning of the plant's move towards electrifying its supply chain. Mr Simpson added: 'We're exploring further opportunities to allow other hauliers to use the charging station as well as looking at other opportunities to maximise its full potential.' Auctions aren't restricted to the rich and famous as thousands of cars are sold at motor auctions in the UK each week. Here's what you need to know before attending an auction: Be prepared: Do your research on the car you would like to purchase beforehand. Check the car: Cars will usually be lined up before the start, so make sure to arrive early to inspect the desired car thoroughly. Have a back-up : Be ready for disappointment as your desired motor may be sold to someone else and select a few back-ups. Be realistic: Realise that there won't be a "perfect" car at an auction and adjust expectations accordingly. Set a budget : It is easy to overspend in the heat of the moment during bidding. Ensure you have set a budget and do not go over it. Key phrases to look out for: 'No major mechanical faults' – suggests that there shouldn't be any issues with the car's drivetrain, gearbox, suspension, or engine. 'Specified faults' – the auctioneer will read out specific faults. 'Sold as seen' – the vehicle is sold with any problems it may have. The auction company will rarely entertain complaints regarding the mechanical or cosmetic condition of these vehicles after sale. 'Sold with a warranted mileage' - The car is being offered based on the report, which confirms the mileage through an independent check. 5 It features a sought after manual gear box Credit: Jam Press/Iconic Auctioneers 5 The DB6 will be sold at auction in August Credit: Jam Press/Iconic Auctioneers 5 The iconic Aston has been refinished in slate grey Credit: Jam Press/Iconic Auctioneers Advertisement

New cheapest EV in Britain revealed as Tesla rival knocks £1,500 off price of compact city car

A NEW Chinese electric vehicle has grabbed the crown as Britain's cheapest EV – knocking its rival off the top spot with a surprise price cut. 5 The Leapmotor T03 city car is now on sale for just £14,495 5 That makes it £500 cheaper than the Dacia Spring Credit: Newspress That makes it £500 cheaper than the The price drop applies immediately across the UK as Leapmotor looks to get ahead of the The firm, which now sells its models through Vauxhall and Peugeot showrooms as part of a deal with European giant Stellantis, says it is offering customers an instant saving while the official subsidy remains weeks away. Based in China, Leapmotor is also cutting the cost of its larger C10 SUV by £3,750. Read more on Motors The new price tag of £32,750 puts it well under the Government's £37,000 grant threshold. Both cars qualify for 0 per cent finance deals and come with long warranties — four years on the car and eight years on the battery. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander confirmed the Government's new scheme on Monday. The Electric Car Grant will offer between £1,500 and £3,750 off qualifying electric vehicles, depending on how sustainably they are made. Most read in Motors However, it's not available yet, as carmakers must apply for approval — a process that could take weeks. That's left firms like Leapmotor in limbo. The brand says its 'Leap-Grant' is a proactive move to give drivers savings now, before the Government scheme kicks in. Managing director Damien Dally said the company wants to give drivers clarity, confidence and immediate savings. But questions hang over whether Leapmotor — and other Chinese EV makers — will qualify at all. To get the full Government grant, manufacturers must meet green targets under the Science-Based Targets initiative, a framework that rates the environmental impact of vehicle production, including energy use at factories. Transport Minister Lilian Greenwood has warned that vehicles made in China may not be eligible. Speaking on the BBC's Today programme, she said factories powered by coal are unlikely to meet the Government's strict criteria. She added that only brands reaching minimum environmental standards will be approved for taxpayer support. This has sparked tension with the Chinese government. A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in London said the UK must follow World Trade Organisation rules and avoid discriminatory policies. They warned they are monitoring the situation closely and would defend the rights of Chinese companies. 'It swallows up the potholes and the bumps' cries car dealership owner over popular motor brand ideal for the countryside Even There's also doubt over the Dacia Spring's eligibility. Although Dacia is a Renault-owned brand, the Spring is built in Wuhan, China, at a joint venture facility shared with Dongfeng Motor Group. Seven low-cost electric cars expected to benefit from the grant — including the Dacia Spring, MG4, Peugeot e-208, But with the Government now focusing on sustainability standards, many of those could also miss out on the full grant unless their makers can prove they meet the green benchmarks. Tax payers are, however, footing the bill for the £650million subsidy scheme, including for EVs leased through Motability, prompting criticism from some quarters. Commentators have questioned whether public funds should be used to make new cars cheaper for wealthier drivers at a time when many families are struggling to afford food. The Government is also promising £63million to improve the UK's public charging infrastructure and £25million to help people without off-street parking charge their EVs at home. But even Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander admitted she doesn't currently drive an electric vehicle herself, citing the cost. For now, Leapmotor is pressing ahead with its own incentive. The T03 is being offered on a four-year personal contract purchase plan at just £169 per month with a £169 deposit. The larger C10 SUV comes in at £319 per month, also with a matching deposit and 0 per cent APR. Both offers run until 30 September. Whether the brand qualifies for official Government support or not, Leapmotor has made its move — and, for now at least, it means Britain's cheapest electric car is Chinese, costs just under £14.5k. 5 The new price tag of £32,750 puts it well under the Government's £37,000 grant threshold Credit: Leapmotor 5 But even Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander admitted she doesn't currently drive an electric vehicle herself, citing the cost Credit: Leapmotor 5 Seven low-cost electric cars expected to benefit from the grant Credit: Getty
