Could Poor AI Literacy Cause Bad Personal Decisions?

A recent article in Ars Technica revealed that a man switched from household salt (sodium chloride) to sodium bromide after using an AI tool. He ended up in an emergency room. Nate Anderson wrote, "His distress, coupled with the odd behavior, led the doctors to run a broad set of lab tests, revealing multiple micronutrient deficiencies…. But the bigger problem was that the man appeared to be suffering from a serious case of "bromism." This is an ailment related to excessive bromine. After seeing this, it made me wonder if poor critical thinking skills and low AI literacy could actually cause people to make bad or even harmful decisions.
As a weather and climate scientist, I am particularly aware of widespread misinformation and disinformation propagating around. People think the Earth is flat or that scientists can steer hurricanes. National Weather Service offices are fielding calls from people with wacky theories about geoengineering, groundhogs, and so forth. My fear is that a lack of understanding of Generative AI might make things worse and even cause harm as we saw in the case of bromism.
Even in my own circle of intelligent friends and family members, it is clear to me that some people have very limited understanding of AI. They are familiar with Large Language Model tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, CoPilot, and others. They assume that's AI. It certainly is AI, but there is more to AI too. I experience a version of these types of assumptions, ironically, in my professional field. People see meteorologists on television. Because that is the most accessible type of meteorologist to them, they assume all meteorologists are on television. The majority of meteorologists do not work in the broadcast industry at all, but I digress.
Let's define AI. According to the Digital.gov, 'Artificial intelligence (AI) is an emerging technology where machines are programmed to learn, reason, and perform in ways that simulate human intelligence. Although AI technology took a dramatic leap forward, the ability of machines to automate manual tasks has been around for a long time.'
The popular AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini are examples of Generative artificial intelligence or GenAI. A Congressional website noted, 'Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) refers to AI models, in particular those that use machine learning (ML) and are trained on large volumes of data, that are able to generate new content.' Other types of AI models may do things like classify data, synthesize information, or even make decisions. AI, for example, is used in automated vehicles and is even integrated into emerging generations of weather forecast models. The website went on to say, 'GenAI, when prompted (often by a user inputting text), can create various outputs, including text, images, videos, computer code, or music.' Many people are using GenAI Large Language Models or LLMs daily without context, which brings me back to the salt case article in Ars Technica.
Nate Anderson continued, '…. It's not clear that the man was actually told by the chatbot to do what he did. Bromide salts can be substituted for table salt—just not in the human body. They are used in various cleaning products and pool treatments, however.' Doctors replicated his search and found that bromide is mentioned but with proper context noting that it is not suitable for all uses. AI hallucination can happen when LLMs produce factually incorrect, outlandish, unsubstantiated or bad information. However, it seems that this case was more about context and critical thinking (or lack thereof).
As a weather expert, I have learned over the years that assumptions about how the public consumes information can be flawed. You would be surprised at how many ways '30% chance of rain' or 'tornado watch' is consumed. Context matters. In my discipline, we have a problem with 'social mediarology.' People post single run hurricane models and snowstorm forecasts two weeks out for clicks, likes, and shared Most credible meteorologists understand the context of that information, but someone receiving it on TikTok or YouTube may not. Without context, the use of critical thinking skills, or an understanding of LLMs, bad information is likely to be consumed or spread.
Kimberly Van Orman is lecturer in the Institute for Artificial Intelligence. She told me, 'I think considering them 'synthetic text generators' is really helpful. That's at the core of what they do. They have no means of distinguishing truth or falsity. They have no 'ground truth. University of Washington linguist Emily Bender studies this topic and has consistently warned that tools ChatGPT and all other language models are simply unverified text synthesis machines. In fact, she recently argued that the first 'L" in LLM should stand for 'limited' not "large".
To be clear, I am actually an advocate of proper, ethical use of AI. The climate scientist side of me keeps an eye on the energy and water consumption aspects as well, but I believe we will find a solution to that problem. Microsoft, for example, has explored underwater data centers. AI is here. That ship has sailed. However, it is important that people understand its strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats. People fear what they don't understand.

For years, the game of chess has been seen as a litmus test for how far AI can go against the human intellect. When IBM's Deep Blue supercomputer beat reigning Chess world champion Garry Kasparov in 1997, it was deemed a pivotal moment. The Wall Street Journal called it 'one giant leap backward for mankind.' It hasn't been a total route for humanity, however. Just a month ago, Norwegian chess grandmaster Magnus Carlsen beat ChatGPT in a chess game without losing a single piece. Interestingly, the AI bots are fighting, too. Earlier this month, ChatGPT (backed by OpenAI's GPT-o3 reasoning model) beat Grok, an AI chatbot developed by Elon Musk-led xAI, in a chess tournament. Recommended Videos But how does an average chess-loving person fare against AI bots at chess? Well, it's frustrating. One of the most recurring themes you will see on chess forums is that bots play 'differently from humans.' Of course, when you're playing against a chess computing bot like Stockfish 16 that can assess over ten million positions per second, not many players stand a chance. On the other hand, some seasoned players say beating chess bots is easier because they follow a pattern, and that one must know how to survive the initial assault to beat them. But at the end of the day, AI bots don't play by conventions. A researcher at Carnegie Mellon University has now come up with a less alien solution – an AI chess bot that plays like a human. Say hello to Allie The bot named Allie is the brainchild of Yiming Zhang, a PhD candidate at the Language Technologies Institute (LTI) in CMU's School of Computer Science. Interestingly, Zhang found himself eager to play chess after watching Netflix's popular series, 'The Queen's Gambit.' But soon after dipping into the world of online chess, he found himself frustrated by chess bots. After playing against them, he realized that these bots play unnaturally. Moreover, the underlying tactics behind a chess engine often make it nearly impossible to beat them, thanks to their training, which involves winning at all costs by doing increasingly complex calculations. That's where Allie differs from your average chess-acing bot. It has been trained on 91 million transcripts of chess games played between humans. As a result, the way it contemplates moves, makes attacking advances, and defends positions feels like an average human player. 'Allie is trained on log sequences of real chess games to model the behaviors of human chess players across the skill spectrum, including non-move behaviors such as pondering times and resignations,' says the research paper. During evaluations, researchers found that Allie actually 'ponders' at critical situations in the game. Go ahead and test your mettle The fact that Allie has been trained to think like a human doesn't mean it's a weak player. Far from it, actually. It can hold its fort against everyone from amateurs to grandmasters. 'Against grandmaster-level (2500 Elo) opponents, Allie with adaptive search exhibits the strength of a fellow grandmaster, all while learning exclusively from humans.' Since being deployed publicly, it has amassed more than 11,500 online chess games on the online platform Lichess, where you can also try your skills against it. So far, it has over 6,500 victories against human players, lost just over 4,000 games, and more than 500 battles have ended in a draw. 'For beginners, it's not interesting or instructive to play against chess bots because the moves they make are often bizarre and incomprehensible to humans,' Zhang explains. Interestingly, Allie is completely free and open-source, which means other researchers can build atop it. Do keep in mind it's only accepting invites for Blitz games. Scientists Say These Are the Worst Ultra-Processed Foods You Can Eat

Some ultra-processed foods are healthier than others, according to the organization. Experts say it's still important to limit how much ultra-processed foods you eat. Ultra-processed foods have been a hot topic in nutrition, with a government report released in May linking this food category to a range of chronic diseases. Now, the American Heart Association (AHA) has released a new scientific advisory statement, breaking down the best and worst ultra-processed foods you can eat, and their impact on health. This echoes a growing argument in the nutrition and health community, especially given that up to 70% of our food supply is made up of ultra-processed foods. 'Ultra-processed foods are such a large part of the American diet, and whatever we can do to steer our diet toward healthier options would be beneficial to our cardiovascular health,' says Cheng-Han Chen, M.D., interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Structural Heart Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, CA. Meet the experts: Danbee Kim, M.D.,, nutrition expert, weight loss surgeon, and assistant professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School; Cheng-Han Chen, M.D., interventional cardiologist and medical director of the Structural Heart Program at MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center in Laguna Hills, CA; Keri Gans, R.D., author of The Small Change Diet; Kathleen Moore, R.D.N., a registered dietitian nutritionist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center So, which ultra-processed foods are considered 'healthier' and what does this mean for your diet going forward? Doctors and a dietitian explain. What are ultra-processed foods? The levels of food processing are classified under something called the NOVA scale. This scale lumps foods into these four main categories: Unprocessed and minimally processed foods: This includes foods that are in their natural state or barely altered, like strawberries, carrots, and milk. Processed culinary ingredients: These ingredients are created through minimal processing, like pressing, refining, grinding, or milling. The category includes things like olive oil and almond flour. Processed foods: Foods in this category are changed from their natural state. They usually have sugar, oil, salt, or other substances added. Canned tuna and some cheese fall under this umbrella. Ultra-processed foods: Ultra-processed foods contain ingredients like artificial colors and flavors, preservatives for shelf stability, and other ingredients to preserve texture. Many packaged foods are considered ultra-processed. What did the report say? The report doesn't have great things to say about ultra-processed foods, calling them a 'growing public health challenge.' Even more, 'most ultra-processed foods overlap with foods high in saturated fat, added sugars, and sodium, which are already targets for cardiometabolic risk reduction,' the report states. The report lists a link between ultra-processed foods and a range of serious health complications, including heart attacks, stroke, sleep disorders, depression, type 2 diabetes, and obesity. But the report also stresses the importance of identifying 'high-risk' ultra-processed foods subgroups to break down healthier options within this category. By encouraging people to have less of the most harmful ultra-processed foods and steering them more towards 'a small number of select, affordable ultra-processed foods of better diet quality,' people may improve their health risks, the review says. The best ultra-processed foods The AHA stops short of saying that certain ultra-processed foods are actually healthy. But the organization flags some options as being better for you than others. Those include: Low-sodium whole-grain breads and crackers Low-sugar yogurts Tomato sauces Nut- or bean-based spreads Flavored dry-roasted chickpeas Unsweetened, dried fruit-based snacks Unsweetened high-fiber cereal Plant-based meat and dairy alternatives that are low in sodium, added sugars, and saturated fat, like soy milk and tofu 'Some ultra-processed foods can provide essential nutrients,' says Keri Gans, R.D., author of The Small Change Diet. 'In contrast, others are loaded with added sugar, sodium, and unhealthy fats. Knowing the difference helps you choose options that work best for your health and your lifestyle.' These foods 'can actually provide useful nutrients and help people get affordable, convenient foods—especially when fresh options are harder to find,' says Danbee Kim, M.D., nutrition expert, weight loss surgeon, and assistant professor at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. Labeling some ultra-processed foods as better than others may also help people make more informed choices, says Kathleen Moore, R.D.N., a registered dietitian nutritionist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. 'Labeling all ultra-processed foods as 'bad' may discourage the consumption of some nutrient-rich convenient options, like whole grain breads, cereals and cereal bars, yogurt, and grab-and-go meals,' she says. 'Sometimes it is useful to use some ultra-processed foods to save time or to incorporate balanced meal options when fresh foods are limited. Knowing which ultra-processed foods are more healthy will help consumers make better choices.' The worst ultra-processed foods The AHA also broke down the least healthy ultra-processed foods. Those include: Chicken nuggets Sausage Hot dogs Sugar-sweetened beverages Liquid cheese products Cookies Candies Gummy fruit snacks Refined grain breads Tortillas Dairy-based desserts like ice cream Ready-to-heat meals made with refined grains, high fats, or processed meats like boxed macaroni and cheese or pizza Tortilla- and potato-based chips Is it OK to eat a lot of 'healthy' ultra-processed foods? While the AHA report called out healthier versions of ultra-processed foods, experts say that still doesn't mean you should load up. 'These can provide beneficial nutrients and fit into a balanced diet,' Gans says. 'However, still pair them with plenty of whole and minimally processed foods for optimal health.' Dr. Chen agrees. 'As much as possible, we should aim to eat whole foods rather than processed foods,' he says. But these foods have an important role for some people, as Moore points out. 'I work with many clients who incorporate ultra-processed foods into their weekly schedules for a variety of reasons,' she says. 'Some cannot seem to find time for breakfast, or have a work schedule that makes sitting down for lunch difficult. I have clients who are busy parents and benefit from a frozen family meal or 'grab and go' meal when sports events make it difficult to eat a home-cooked meal. Overall, I encourage my patients to limit ultra-processed foods to less than half of their overall consumption.' Dr. Kim suggests trying to have these foods in moderation. 'Think of 'healthier' ultra-processed foods as a tool—something you can lean on when they help make your diet more balanced or easier to stick to, but not something to make the star of your plate at every meal,' she says. How to reduce ultra-processed foods in your diet The best way to reduce ultra-processed foods in your diet is to focus on whole foods first, according to Gans. 'Be prepared. Stock your pantry with nutrient-rich staples like canned tomatoes, beans, and oatmeal,' she says. 'Include more fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains, and make small swaps, like 100% whole-grain bread for white.' In a perfect scenario, Gans says that the first ingredient in the things you eat should be a whole food. While you're at it, Dr. Kim suggests cutting back on the 'worst offenders,' especially sugary drinks, processed meats, packaged sweets, and salty snacks. 'The fewer ultra-processed foods you eat, the better—but it's about progress, not perfection,' Dr. Kim says. 'Swap out the unhealthy ones first, make room for healthier stand-ins when needed, and keep working toward a diet built mostly from whole, real foods.' We're all probably feeling a little anxious about AI. It's horrible for the environment, is used as an excuse to fire workers, floods the internet with misinformation and slop, entrenches government surveillance, and appears to be driving people into psychosis. And so, at a time when many college students are dropping out to join AI startups, one former MIT student says she called it quits because she's afraid of something altogether more catastrophic: that an artificial general intelligence (AGI), or superhuman AI, will completely wipe out the human race, Forbes reports. "I was concerned I might not be alive to graduate because of AGI," Alice Blair, who enrolled at the university in 2023, told the publication. "I think in a large majority of the scenarios, because of the way we are working towards AGI, we get human extinction." Blair now works as a technical writer at the nonprofit Center for AI Safety, and has no plans to go back to MIT. She joined, hoping to meet other people interested in making AI safe, and apparently was disappointed. "I predict that my future lies out in the real world," she told Forbes. Nikola Jurković, a Harvard alum who served at his school's AI safety club, is sympathetic to the idea. "If your career is about to be automated by the end of the decade, then every year spent in college is one year subtracted from your short career," he told Forbes. "I personally think AGI is maybe four years away and full automation of the economy is maybe five or six years away." Building an AGI, a system that matches or surpasses human intelligence, is much of the AI industry's endgame. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman called the recent launch of its poorly-received AI model GPT-5 a major stepping stone towards AGI, even going as far as to call it "generally intelligent." Many experts are skeptical, however, that we're anywhere near building such a powerful AI model, and point to recent signs that improvements to the tech are hitting a wall. "It is extremely unlikely that AGI will come in the next five years," Gary Marcus, an AI researcher and outspoken critic of the industry, told Forbes. "It's just marketing hype to pretend otherwise when so many core problems (like hallucinations and reasoning errors) remain unsolved." And while there are very real forms of harm that AI can cause, outright extinction is a little far-fetched, Marcus said. In fact, the AI industry probably wants you to buy into AI doomsday prophesying. Altman and other tech CEOs raise these risks themselves. Doing so creates the impression that the tech is far more capable than it currently is, and allows these companies to control the narrative around how the tech should be regulated. And if you're envisioning an apocalypse like in "The Matrix" movies — human enslavement at the hands of machine intelligences that rebelled against their creators — you may be ignoring the very mundane forms of harm it's already causing, like job automation and the gutting of the environment.
