There's a strong chance we haven't seen the last of Tom Cruise's super spy Ethan Hunt.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is billed and marketed as the last film in Cruise's long-running Mission: Impossible series, but the reality is very different. So, how likely is a sequel?
Directed by Christopher McQuarrie and starring Cruise alongside Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett, the story picks up where 2023's Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning left off. Namely, with Cruise and his team of agents racing to prevent a powerful AI entity falling into the wrong hands.

In this article you can expect massive spoilers for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which released Friday, 23 May, 2025.
Is Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning The Last Movie?
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is being promoted as the last movie in the series. That's not only clear from the title itself, but the film's nostalgia-laden plot, which features copious flashbacks to key moments and major characters from across the 30-year franchise.
However, that doesn't necessarily mean it is the last movie. Cruise's character notably doesn't die at the end of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. He manages tounfurl his parachute at the last minute as he drops from a crashing biplane. That suggests he could reprise his role in a future instalment. But should he?
Cruise is now 61 years old, and while he's still in incredible shape, those wild stunts the Mission: Impossible films are known for are only going to get more taxing. In addition, Cruise is set to start filming a SpaceX collaboration film with director Doug Liman next. That's going to delay the next Mission: Impossible, so he could be 65 by the time it enters production.
Is There Going to be a Mission: Impossible 9?
Mission: Impossible could continue without Cruise. It seems unthinkable now, but there are plenty of actors who could take Ethan's place, similar to how a procession of actors have played the character of James Bond. However, if Cruise and his team deem Ethan irreplaceable, the film could centre on a different IMF agent while still retaining everything that makes the Mission: Impossible films so popular.
Pegg, Atwell, Czerny, Bassett, Klementieff and more legacy characters could feature in any subsequent instalments, and Paramount could ensure tonal consistency by using the same director in Christopher McQuarrie.
Back in June 2022, McQuarrie teased further Mission: Impossible movies that extend past Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning. He told Fandango "Parts 1 and 2 are not the end of the series, and they already have ideas for what comes next." That was three years ago though, to be fair, and a lot can happen in that time.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Ending
At the end of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, Cruise manages to wrestle the AI key from Gabriel while the pair fight in the cockpit of a biplane. Gabriel falls from the plane, hitting his head on the tail and plummeting to the Earth (the fall will have killed him, but we don't actually see him die).
Cruise, meanwhile, lands safely. He's able to destroy the AI entity and avert global nuclear war. The film ends in London's Trafalgar Square, where he and his IMF agents meet up and share knowing smiles.
So, they're reunited once again, which certainly sets up a possible sequel. However, considering Cruise's age and the finality of the ending, it might be best to leave it there.

Tom Cruise's ‘Mission Impossible' Tops China Box Office

(Bloomberg) -- Tom Cruise's film is back on top in China. Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning posted the biggest opening for a US film in the country this year, defying trade and geopolitical tensions between Washington and Beijing. Billionaire Steve Cohen Wants NY to Expand Taxpayer-Backed Ferry Where the Wild Children's Museums Are The Economic Benefits of Paying Workers to Move Now With Colorful Blocks, Tirana's Pyramid Represents a Changing Albania At London's New Design Museum, Visitors Get Hands-On Access Paramount Global's eighth installment in the action franchise earned $25.2 million across 11,847 locations in China during the opening weekend, the studio said in a statement. The film has become the top-performing US release in the country for 2025, surpassing Warner Bros Entertainment Inc.'s A Minecraft Movie which raised $29 million since its April 4 debut, according to ticketing platform Maoyan. While the Final Reckoning opening is comparable to its 2023 predecessor, the latest film's performance stands out in a year when most US titles have struggled to gain traction in China. Minecraft opened with $14.5 million, while Walt Disney Co.'s Thunderbolts and Lilo & Stitch brought in $10.5 million and $8.7 million, respectively, on opening weekend. Tickets for larger Imax screens accounted for 19% of Final Reckoning's total box office revenue, Imax China said. That marked the highest Imax share ever for the franchise on both opening day and opening weekend, the company said. The solid performance of Cruise's new film, which he's said will be his last Mission: Impossible, suggests that Hollywood pictures have withstood rising tensions between the world's two largest economies. In April, Beijing said it would 'moderately reduce' the number of US films allowed into the market as part of a broader response to trade friction. While initial negotiations between Washington and Beijing began shortly after, talks have since stalled. The Mission: Impossible series, starring Cruise as secret agent Ethan Hunt, has long been emblematic of China's enthusiasm for Hollywood. In 2018 — when US films reached a peak share of the Chinese market — the sixth installment of the franchise opened to around $77 million in China. But that momentum slowed after the first Trump administration sparked off a trade clash, leading to fewer releases and diminished returns. Under the Chinese government's national agenda to boost consumption, China has been gradually allowing more foreign films in an effort to help stimulate spending while moviegoers are visiting theaters at malls. Imax China said its upcoming slate features several high-profile releases, including the fantasy epic How to Train Your Dragon by DreamWorks Animation and dinosaur adventure Jurassic World: Rebirth by Comcast Corp.'s Universal Pictures as well as Warner Bros.' Superman. (Updates with data from Imax China starting in third paragraph.) After Top Gun: Maverick's Success, Why Did The Team Make F1 With Brad Pitt Instead Of Tom Cruise?

Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski came together to make Top Gun: Maverick and in the process made one of the biggest movies in recent years. It wasn't the first film the pair had made together, and Cruise likes to work with certain directors again and again. But Kosinski's follow-up to Maverick, the racing drama F1, stars Brad Pitt instead of Cruise. But this is probably a good thing, according to the filmmakers. The Mission: Impossible star is no stranger to racing movies, having made the hit Days of Thunder. One can imagine Cruise would have been right at home behind the wheel of a Formula One car, doing all the driving himself. However, Joseph Kosinski admits that, as capable as Tom is, he might have actually pushed things too far. The director recently told GQ… Tom always pushes it to the limit, but at the same time is super capable and very skilled. They both have the natural talent for driving. But yeah, I could see Tom maybe scaring us a little bit more. It's certainly true that Tom Cruise doesn't like to be told 'No.' The man has fired insurance companies who wouldn't let him perform certain stunts in movies, so it's difficult to imagine that he would be ok with drawing a line on his driving in a movie and letting somebody else do any of it. Brad Pitt still does a great deal of the actual driving that we will see when F1 hits theaters later this summer. But it seems he doesn't do all of it, which is why the filmmakers seem to be glad they're not working with Cruise on this one. F1's action-vehicle supervisor, Graham Kelly, who has worked with Tom Cruise before, indicates that Pitt knows when to draw a line, while Cruise may not. He explained… We'd have had a crash. Tom pushes it to the limit. I mean really to the limit. That terrifies me. I mean, I've done loads of Mission: Impossibles with Tom and it's the most stressful experience for someone like me building cars for him, doing stunts with him. Whereas Brad listens and he knows his abilities, and I think he'd be the first to say, 'Yeah, I'm not going to do that.' This may be the first time I've seen filmmakers indicate that Cruise's desire to do 'everything' on screen might not always be for the best. Still, the A-lister has indicated there are plans to make a sequel to Days of Thunder down the road, so the actor who insists on doing it all will likely get his chance to do all the high-speed driving he wants. And he and Joseph Kosinski may still find themselves together again on the almost inevitable Top Gun 3.
