Being knighted by ‘music lover' Charles very special – composer Sir John Rutter
Composer Sir John Rutter said it was 'very special' to receive a knighthood from the King because Charles is a 'music lover'.
Sir John, who is also a conductor, editor and arranger, was honoured on Tuesday for services to music at Buckingham Palace.
Speaking after the ceremony, he said he was 'surprised and delighted' to have been awarded a knighthood in the King's Birthday Honours List.
He said: ' One of the things that made today's ceremony very special for me was the fact that I was being knighted by a music lover, somebody to whom music is very important and who appreciates its value and its place in our national life, and who I think is a wonderful figurehead for everybody who wants to engage in music, whether as a performer or as a composer or just a supporter and so, I felt that, in a sense, I was talking, and he spoke very pleasantly with me, almost like with a friend, and I think that's what made it special.'
Sir John is best known for his choral compositions, including Christmas carols, anthems and extended works such as the Gloria, the Requiem and the Magnificat.
The musician has previously had works commissioned for major royal events including Queen Elizabeth II's golden jubilee and the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 2011.
More recently, the first two choral items sung at the late Queen's platinum jubilee national service of thanksgiving in June 2022, and six pieces performed at the coronation of King Charles, were arrangements by Sir John.
Asked how it felt to have his music be the soundtrack of some of the most significant events in the lives of the Royal family, he said: 'If I worried about how many people were going to be witnessing the occasion on television or radio, I wouldn't ever pick up my pencil and so, for example, when I was invited to write an anthem for Prince William and Kate's wedding, I just thought, well, they are a young couple.
'I don't know them personally, though I did speak with them, but I know that it will be a special day for them and so I'm, as it were, writing a piece of music for two lovely young people who are having a special day in their lives and I didn't worry.
'I don't think any of the musicians taking part worried about the fact that it was witnessed by an estimated two billion people.
'I think, you know, that would just make your pen freeze in your hand.
'As a composer, you just get on with the job and enjoy the occasion.'
Sir John said that, whether he was composing for his local church or a royal event, 'every day' in his career was special.
He continued: 'Everybody who's involved in making music does it for love, whether they get paid or not, and I parachute in as a composer and get to meet those who actually make the music, who sing or who play, and I just conduct generally, if it's something I've written, then I'm bringing my child to life, as it were, which is always a thrill.
'So, I wouldn't single out any one moment.
'I've been fortunate to be asked to write music for various royal occasions, but then I've been asked to write music for my local church choir or just for a wedding of a couple of friends.
'They're all special.'
Sir John was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for services to music in the 2007 New Year Honours, and in 2023 he became a Fellow of The Ivors Academy.

Prince William's 'true feelings' on key Trooping the Colour role confirmed
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info The Royal Family is in full preparation mode for the upcoming Trooping the Colour festivities, which are just around the corner. In keeping with time-honoured tradition, senior royals will saddle up and accompany the King's carriage during the procession from Buckingham Palace to Horse Guards Parade. Word has it that King Charles, accompanied by his wife, Queen Camilla, will be riding in a carriage, while Prince William, Princess Anne, and Prince Edward will join the procession on horseback. As the Colonel of the Welsh Guards, last year saw William riding alongside other senior royals decked out in the bright red uniform featuring a leek emblem at the neck, complemented by a traditional bearskin cap accented with the regiment's distinct white and green plume. READ MORE - Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen's major life change after terrifying Netflix ordeal READ MORE - Princesses Eugenie and Beatrice 'waiting in wings' as King William makes 'shake up' Adorned with his Most Noble Order of the Garter Sash, Royal Air Force Pilot Wings, and four medals – the Gold, Diamond, Platinum Jubilee medals, alongside the Coronation Medal, William cut a striking figure. A source confided to the Sunday Times regarding the heir-to-the-throne's views on participating in the procession atop a horse: "He really enjoys it." These comments regarding William's participation this year follow reports suggesting that King Charles might choose the comfort of a carriage ride for a second consecutive year, reports the Mirror. And despite King Charles likely opting out of horseback riding in this year's parade, the occasion will mark the first time Princess Royal is seen riding publicly since her hospitalisation for a suspected equine-related injury last year. At 74, Anne is set to participate in the parade this year, taking up her position as gold stick, which involves her role as colonel of the Blues and Royals. She will be riding alongside the Duke of Edinburgh, who serves as colonel of the Scots Guards and London Guards, as well as Prince William. King Charles has been a fixture on horseback in the parade, both for his mother's birthday celebrations and his own. However, due to his struggle with cancer, the 76 year old King is expected to travel by carriage again this year, repeating last year's mode of transport. A Royal aide recently shared insights into King Charles's health battle, stating: "The thing you learn about this illness [cancer] is that you just manage it. And that's what he does." They added: "Medical science has made incredible advances and I genuinely see no difference in him... As long as you just do what the doctors say, just live your life as normal as possible." Continuing on King Charles's health, the aide remarked: "It's no secret that he is still having treatment but because he is incredibly fit, he is just dealing with it all incredibly well. As everybody knows he is driven by duty, so he just gets on with it." 2023 marked the last year King Charles rode in the ceremony, which was a momentous occasion as it was the first time a monarch had ridden in the parade since Queen Elizabeth did back in 1986. After her trusted horse retired, Queen Elizabeth then opted for a carriage from 1987 until her final appearance in 2022, where she gave her salute from Buckingham Palace's balcony. The annual Trooping the Colour event, traditionally held in June to celebrate the sovereign's official birthday since King George IV ascended the throne in 1820, has been a steadfast tradition barring interruptions during the world wars and a national strike in 1955. In 2020, due to the Covid pandemic, a pared-down version of the festivities took place at Windsor Castle. The 2025 Trooping the Colour, officially dubbed The King's Birthday Parade, is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, in London.

Welsh choir formed just 16 months ago gets immense booking and some still think it's a wind up
Welsh choir formed just 16 months ago gets immense booking and some still think it's a wind up People have been telephoning to check, convinced it can't be true The Principality Stadium, Cardiff, ahead of the Wales vs New Zealand autumn international in 2022 (Image: Mark Lewis/Huw Evans Agency ) A male voice choir which didn't exist 16 months ago will be performing at the Principality Stadium ahead of the Wales vs New Zealand autumn international, and some pre-match nerves are starting to kick in. Matthew Bailey, of Cor Meibion Clydach, said they would be one of three choirs singing together, including performing the teams' respective national anthems ahead of kick-off. Cllr Bailey, a Swansea councillor who represents Clydach, said two choir members phoned him to ask if it was a wind-up. "They said, 'All joking aside, are we actually going to sing at the Principality Stadium?'" he said. Cor Meibion Clydach has performed Christmas and VE Day concerts in front of around 400 people - somewhat fewer than the Principality's 74,000 capacity. "It is a great honour," said Cllr Bailey. "Its Wales-New Zealand - a massive game." For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here He reckoned the choirs would sing around eight songs and then the national anthems. "There is an element of nervousness," said Cllr Bailey. "You're probably never going to get this opportunity again. You've got to perform. It would help if we could have a couple of drinks beforehand!" Cllr Bailey, who last year resurrected what had been a successful male voice choir in Clydach in the past, said he'd been in touch with an official who arranged choirs at the stadium and that he received an email last Thursday saying Cor Meibion Clydach was one of the three selected. He said Cor Meibion Clydach member Wayne Griffiths had sung at the stadium previously with his other choir, Morriston Orpheus, Swansea, and described the experience as "completely emotional". "I am really looking forward to it, and everybody is in the choir is as well," he said. "Standing on the pitch in front of 70,000 people, singing - I will be an emotional wreck." Mr Brunton, 58, who used to play second row for Vardre RFC, Clydach, said the All Blacks were the biggest test for any Wales rugby team. They haven't lost to Wales since 1953. Cor Meibion Clydach has been guided and improved by musical director Gareth Sims and his accompanist wife, Julie. Cllr Bailey said it was up to 38 members and could accommodate more. The choir practises on Thursday evenings at Vardre RFC. Sunday sessions are also taking place on the back of the Principality Stadium news. Article continues below One of its members is David Waghorn, president of Vardre RFC. Speaking in April he said he used to listen to and help the previous male voice choir before it disbanded many years ago and that he'd regretted not joining it. "Everyone tells me singing is good for the soul and well-being," said Mr Waghorn . "I thought, 'I'm not going to miss out this time.' It's one of the best things I have done."

"Poundland has something that I'm gonna put you ladies on to that you will be thanking me for," she said in a video on her TikTok page. She then held up the bras - one black and one white - as she raved about the budget buy. "They are some of the best bras I have worn," she continued. "These and the cotton ones they do - exceptional. "I think they go up to like a DD and an E, but I'm a 36D and they're phenomenal. "If you haven't got onto the Poundland bra hype - actually the Poundland clothes hype - that section is absolutely cracking!" "Poundland must have and it's only £3!" Sophie captioned her video. "When you spend so much you get vouchers every month, so could even get a free 1 a month!" An ex employee on Poundland's prices Holly Laing, 22, from Northampton, has revealed she used to work in Poundland and often heard customers say the same annoying thing. Holly claimed she worked for Poundland in 2015 for three months as a Christmas temp. She said that customers would get annoyed when products cost more than £1 individually. In a comical video, Holly acted out a scenario that often occurred on her shift at the bargain store, where customers were always baffled and irritated that items could cost over £1. Holly uploaded her video with the caption "I heard this a lot" as she said: 'POV: Not everything's £1 in Poundland'. Holly explained that customers would often say to her: 'But this is the pound shop, is it not?' "That's very misleading, I'll only pay for that if it's a pound.' 'Disgusting, what a rip off." Poundland currently has a 70% off sale running in stores, where everything included is £5 or under. And the store is becoming increasingly popular for its low-price, high quality clothes - with some people even insisting it's overtaken Primark for its basics. "We've also extended our basics range because we know the importance of having those wardrobe staples that you can rely on year-round," Poundland said on their website. "Our classic T-Shirts and versatile dresses are perfect for mixing and matching with the rest of your wardrobe, giving you easy, everyday options for any occasion. "Whether you're dressing up for a casual outing or keeping it simple for running errands, these essentials are timeless, practical, and affordable."
