Festival-Standout Creature Feature ‘Ick' Is Getting a Limited Theatrical Run

Gizmodo2 days ago

Brandon Routh, Mena Suvari, Malina Weissman, and loads of pop-punk songs star in Joseph Kahn's horror comedy.
Regular moviegoers are well familiar with Fathom Entertainment, the company behind nostalgic returns of fan-favorite films to the big screen (including Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade later this month). But it also showcases new films from time to time, including a recent festival standout that audiences might not have gotten to see at the theater otherwise. It's a horror comedy titled Ick that was well-received at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival as well as the 2024 Fantastic Fest (where io9 saw and liked it).
Ick is directed by Joseph Kahn, noted for his extensive resume of stylish music videos as well as previous features like Torque and Bodied. Appropriately, one of Ick's standout qualities is its soundtrack, which is stuffed with pop-punk sing-alongs from early 2000s bands (Blink-182, Paramore, etc.)—important nostalgia fodder for the main character, played by Brandon Routh, a high school teacher who's still longing for his decades-old glory days on the same high school's football field.
And, of course, since this is a horror movie, the town where said high school is located has a problem described by the movie title: a mysterious and dangerous icky substance that seems to be growing in power.
Check out the trailer:
The cast of Ick also includes Mena Suvari as the Routh character's former flame, and Malina Weissman as her teenage daughter.
Though it's only getting a three-day release, that Ick is getting a chance to stretch out on a theatrical screen at all is encouraging news for other smaller, non-franchise horror films. Hopefully this is the start of a trend that will expand audiences for more future cult classics to come.
You can catch Ick in theaters in New York and Los Angeles starting July 24; then, it'll get a nationwide engagement July 27-29. You can sign up to learn when tickets go on sale at Fathom Entertainment's website.

Travis Kelce's Immediate Reaction to Shaquille O'Neal's Taylor Swift Admission

Travis Kelce's Immediate Reaction to Shaquille O'Neal's Taylor Swift Admission originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce and his brother Jason Kelce's podcast, "New Heights," announced on Tuesday that their next guest on the show is none other than NBA legend Shaquille O'Neal. They initially teased the announcement by dropping a hint that their next guest would be their "biggest guest ever." They weren't joking as they revealed shortly after that O'Neal would be their surprise guest for Wednesday's episode of the show. "New Heights" also provided a short preview of their interview with the four-time NBA champion, and one moment that stood out was O'Neal admitting that his "favorite song in the world" is Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble." Travis Kelce, who has been dating Swift for nearly two years, was extremely excited after hearing O'Neal's big revelation. Tayvis Nation, a social media fan account dedicated to the Chiefs tight end, captured Kelce's immediate reaction to O'Neal's Swiftie admission, and it showed just how happy he was in the moment. Kelce was dancing, clapping and laughing in the video clip. He thanked O'Neal for the shoutout before sending a message to his girlfriend about her recent major announcement. "Shout out to TayTay — just got that song back too,' Kelce said, 'She bought all her music back, so it's finally hers.' Kelce's statement was in reference to Swift recently announcing that she had been able to buy all of her music back amid her dispute with her previous record label. It was a major milestone for the "Fortnight" singer, and it is also clear that Kelce is very happy for her. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 4, 2025, where it first appeared.

Martin Scorsese Shares Why He No Longer Watches Movies, Not Even His Own, In Cinemas

Martin Scorsese has directed more than 20 feature films, including some of the most beloved of the last half-century: Goodfellas, Taxi Driver, The Departed. But now he says he can no longer go to watch movies in cinema theatres because he becomes too riled by the behaviour of his fellow cinema-goers. Scorsese was talking to US film critic Peter Travers who wrote on his blog The Travers Take: 'I asked the maestro why he doesn't see movies in theatres any more and he went all raging bull about audiences who babble on phones during the movie, leave to order snacks and vats of soda, and keep up a noise level loud enough to drown out the actors.' Travers wrote that he challenged the veteran director: ''Come on, Marty,' I said, 'we couldn't keep our mouths shut when we were kids.'' Travers added: 'His [Scorsese's] eyes darkened. 'Yeah, maybe,' he conceded, 'but when we talked it was always about the movie and the fun we had chewing over the details.'' The Guardian reports that Scorsese has multiple projects in production, including a Hawaii-set crime drama starring Dwayne Johnson and a documentary about the late Pope Francis, with whom it is believed he had the final interview. In his long career, he has received 16 Academy Award nominations for his work, including winning the Best Director Oscar for police corruption thriller The Departed (2007). What's So Special About Liquid Death Drinks?

Simply put, Liquid Death sells canned water. The concept sounds ridiculous. Still, despite initial reservations about the company's success, it is now valued at over $1.4 billion (via NBC News). So what's so special about these drinks? Most of the brand's success comes down to its excellent marketing. Liquid Death is successful because it flips all the stereotypical elements of bottled water on its head. Most common bottled water brands focus on a product's purity, with simple packaging and marketing materials to match. Alternatively, Liquid Death has built a platform on its mission to "murder your thirst," per the company's website. All of its branding screams intensity, and a lot of consumers like the change. Not only can Liquid Death quench your thirst, but it can do so while being entertaining. CEO Mike Cessario told NBC News that the initial thought behind this packaging was to poke fun at over-the-top marketing-speak used by other brands. Ironically, it worked. Liquid Death's successful branding extends beyond its cans, too. The brand's website and social media are also full of its signature shock humor. For example, the brand shows a pregnant customer drinking from a mini keg of its still mountain water in one ad. In another, a doctor chugs a can of Liquid Death before conducting a surgery. This has made the water a popular choice for sober crowds in lieu of expensive non-alcoholic beer. In alcohol-centered spaces, sober participants might stand out with a plastic water bottle in hand, but with Liquid Death, it's easy to blend in. Just the can's design can break down psychological barriers and help them feel like they're part of the crowd. This is also one of the reasons for the invention of the company, as the CEO heard musicians sometimes pour water into energy drink cans so they wouldn't feel self-conscious on stage. Liquid Death is a huge seller at bars, concerts, and musical festivals — one of its biggest investors is actually Live Nation. Now, with the rise of the sober-curious movement, Liquid Death is sure to continue to dominate these spaces. Environmentally-conscious consumers might also appreciate Liquid Death's aluminum packaging, which is easier to recycle than plastic. Lastly, many people simply like the taste of these waters, with some claiming that the aluminum makes the drink taste colder and more refreshing. All of these benefits have helped the Liquid Death brand thrive. The company has since branched out from still water, offering soda-flavored sparkling drinks and iced teas. Clearly, the brand is only getting bigger. Read the original article on Chowhound.
